2L verse Turbo NB


I eventually want to get a new beetle and was just wondering what is better, the 2L or the turbo? There is only $3000 of difference between the two.

Hmm.. I have heard they have had problems with the Turbos.. but I may be wrong. A few recalls, etc..

I have a 2L, but would love a turbo, if those comments above are seen to be untrue, but I am unsure that the power difference is massive. Saying that, I haven't been in one.

An interesting question, and there is a few turbo owners here, so I'll watch on eagerly. If you are after a 2L however, and want to buy brand new car, not used, then you better hurry, as the new model is coming out soon if not now, and they are mostly 1.6L to my understanding..

Its my understanding too that the new model does not have a 2litre option.. only comes in 1.6...
As for which is better??... well.. guess it depends upon how you drive.. how you want it to drive.. whether you eventually want more kW than stock and how much you want to pay to upgrade etc etc etc.. and the list goes on...
I would suggest that you go and test drive them.. decide for yourself what you like and what you eventually want.
When mscabrio was looking for hers we test drove a 1.6L, the 1.8L Turbo and the 2L cabrio (auto). Couldn't explain why but the 1.6 felt much better than the turbo, better acceleration etc... so mscabrio decided she wanted the cabrio. Did not know at the time that you could upgrade the turbo to over 150kW otherwise we probably would have one now.
A supercharger is available for the 2L tho... :yes:
So i guess its up to you... go drive them.. and enjoy.

1.8T golf


Hi Foxy-fuchsia, I have just bought a 2004 Golf GTI 1.8T, it shares the same platform as the new beetle. It is a great car, engine is awseome also, and for around $1600 you can get it chipped and up the power from 150 hp to 207hp and bring the car to life. I have spoken to people who have done this and they have nothing but big smiles. Fuel economy is good also on stock engine I am getting around 600 km's per 45litres on 95 octane. IIRC are you going to meet for drinks on 20 Nov at pavillion if so can take you for a ride in my GTI and then you can judge for yourself, cheers Damien.

hey babe

ive got a turbo NB and it kicks ar$e. ive also had it APR tuned for about $2k and worth every single cent. Also puts the power up around 160kws, (stock is 110kw). Its not a physical chip so the dealers will never know you have it.(the VAG -com does NOT pick it up)

I had previously a 2000 NB 2.0ltr which went well and very torquey but there is simply NO COMPARISON. It had to go....then the real power came along. How can anyone compare stock standard cloth seats to leather heated seats, mmmmmmmmm sheer heaven and yes i do use them quite often.

Im not that far away if you want a spin in my baby, her name is Miriam. Yes she is female but underneath the bonnet she has ...ahem....balls:P

Hey Maya I dont think its quite that high , I would say closer to 150kw . It is detectable if you know what your looking for . But its usually only chip tuners that know the different program variables to destinguish between the various chip makers .

From memory the beetle hasnt had any re-calls . I'll have to double check but I havent carried out any . In terms of engines its obvious that the turbo is the way to go . there is a lot more tuning options available and its definately more reliable . The 2l engine is prone to oil consumption , usually just under the VW maximum spec of 1l per 1000km . So regular checking is essential . If it does use it generally you put in a thicker oil and it uses a heap less ! You also get bigger brakes on the turbo , bigger wheels better interior etc etc .

Oh and Maya , slap on an n75j , dump pipe and you'll easily hit 160kw :P

no recalls... but plenty of probs with the windows.
Why has the 2L got problems with oil consumption? is that limited to certain years?

Bugracer-what is a n75j? Sounds like I may need one.When I ordered my NB Turbo,I had not even seen a Turbo version-ordered it over the phone and had to wait 4 months for it to arrive.My mate had a 2lt model,which I had driven quite a few times and was really impressed-so thought a 110kw instead of 80 must be worth it.They were about $5,000 more when I got mine,with a bit more for the auto and sunroof.When it arrived-WOW-worth the extra$$$.Have since had it chipped thru the diagnostic port-WOW-even more joy to drive.Am now trying to get a bigger exhaust for it to get the full benefit of the upgrade.From research in the US,looks like a complete 2.5inch system will be all I need if I never plan to upgrade the Turbo.Touching wood-the only faults with mine has been the CD player which eventually was replaced with a new one,and the warning light for the rear spoiler activation-it still sometimes doesn't come on.

The beetle wasnt as bad with windows as the Golf . They had more problems with window motors than regulators .
Do I work for VW , do I have to answer that :lol: . I have my own little shop , just setting up a website now , still not complete yet . http://www.euroauto.com.au  . The car in the corner is the first supercharged R32 in Aus from Melbourne . And as for oil consumption , its all 2l models except t4 transporter .

The n75j is the boost control solenoid found on "other" VW models overseas . It increases boost pressure by up to 2 psi and holds wastegate closed for longer . Part number is 034906283J . Just make sure you put it in the right way :P . I would go 3 inch exhaust . Start off with a 3 inch dump pipe then once the bigger turbo is installed get a 3 inch cat back exhaust .
As for the cd players , they are a real $%^# to get out ! Even with the proper tools !

Hey Seb, would you be able to get me one of those n75j thingys or could Guy get it for me. As for the dumb pipe, oops dump pipe, wouldnt that sound a bit ricey. Plus the height ive got the car at the moment, it would get scratched ALOT. Eg; i belly out on those wide flat speed bumps and im only crawling over them:grind:. Anyway would you be able to hide it like the original :D

Best to order that part from a VW dealer , I dont think Guy would stock it . The dump pipe is from the turbo to the catalytic converter . Power is increased but noise isnt really . The noise increase would be similar to before and after getting chipped so its not too bad . You get to hear the turbo working harder :P
Normal oil consumption is UP TO 1L PER 1000KMs . A lot of cars come very close to this , personally anything more than 1l per 10k is excessive . Its in the log book of all VW and Audis .
The Ko4 would be the next step after dump pipe n75j and samco intake . following that the intercooler can be changed . You dont need a front mount there is an upgraded sidemount to suit the ko4 . After that there is a gt28 turbo . Injectors , fuel pump , intercooler and MAF need to be upgraded . This is probably the safe limit of the engine before internals will need doing . As for the gearbox the LSD is a must if you do any hard driving , especially with a KO4 . There are bigger turbo's available but nobody has been game enough to fit them :P

I have read a few VR6 installs into Beetles, but what options are more realistic locally? I'll get more ponies out of this thing yet... And dollars?

Mmm, the NB turbo sounds tasty. I thought to myself that if I am buying a new car I may as well get the turbo, with a sunroof ;) But that won't be for another few years unfortunately! I will probably end up paying around $42000 for the one I want so I will save up some $$$

Why are they taking away the 2L?

I saw your car Maya at a beetle day about 2 months ago? It is very nice, and I saw quite a few nice golfs around it. I heard that the golf and beetle engine are basically the same?

not sure why the 2L is being removed...i think they have deleted a few of the models in the line up and redone the pricing as well.
I would imagine the motors for beetle and golf are the same. - but could be wrong

i had the 2l and loved it :cry i want her back o well but. the turbo in my eyes is the dux guts i went 4 a spin in maya"s and loved it and well i was sold thats my 2c worth and i think its a 2l thing with useing oil :P and i hope that i might get another spin at valla next time maya :tu: pleeeasse:P:P:P:P

as far as i know the turbo is already off the shelf...the only turbo we get now is a turbo diesel with 70 something worth of kilowatts:puke

the bug engine is all the same as golf, audi a3, TT, A4 etc as far as i know the only diff is the Audi's are tuned higher to put out more kilowatts to start with....then you re-tune the ECU and wizz bang you have a monster :ninja:

You can buy inserts that change the rear window to either oval or split window shapes... lol.

the diesel is only better on fuel...alot less power too

More torque..

I think it is a matter of tuning..

The Toureg top of the line model had a V10 TDi, with 750 Nm of torque and will leave an STi WRX standing still...

Yeah, but with the right tuning and so on, I know which one I would prefer..

Fuel milage issues aside, it seems more and more that the way to go is Diesel turbo. At least it is another option. VWA are yet to bring them in though, or at least have been slow to react to do so. In NZ for example, you can get the V5 in a NB, as well as the Four Motion.. In Australia.. Nah.. Happy with what 3 options that we have? :crazy:

eww. I'm sure someone will like them.

Anyway, the following are common problems to all NB's:

Gas lid won't open (mainly prior to 2001.5) - stretch cable is replaced with a new cable and latch assembly
Window regulators - there's a silent 7 year warranty for all plastic bodied regulators which fail. These fail in all A4 platform cars (Golf, NB, A3, TT, etc)

Things unique to the 2.0l

Oil consumption - caused in equal parts by bad running in and poor design of the rings. VW will give you a new engine when it drinks more than 1.5 l per 1000 km... but only after they've stuffed you around a lot

Things unique to the turbo:

Diverter valve is a piece of junk - replace with a Forge unit and forget it
Coil packs are a piece of junk prior to 2004. Worldwide recall ... except in Australia.

Recalls:

On prior to 2002 models, there was an ABS unit recall. It could set fire to the engine bay and destroy the car. This should have been taken care of now.

Honestly, if you can imagine a world where VW Australia stands behind its cars at least as well as Daewoo, and produces them as least as well as Kia, I'd get the turbo any day. The Turbo is more fuel efficient than the 2.slow, doesn't use any oil, is way faster, and is more comfy with more gadgets.

In the US, the 2.slow has been retired for a new engine - the inline 2.5. This is a totally new engine and replaces the 1.8t and 2.0 in the US market, making it the only engine you can get in states which do not allow the 1.9 PDI to be sold. Like the turbo 1.8t, it produces 110 kW and 210 Nm, but it uses more fuel than the 1.8t. The I5 is totally unrelated to the V5 2.3 available in some Euro markets.

We only get the 1.6, 2.slow, and 1.8t here, but it's unclear how long we'll continue to get the 1.8t and 2.0 as both engines disappearing in the main market (the US). Luckily, we don't get the 1.4 l NB.
