Feel for our California mates

Politicians want to repeal the exemption to pre-1974 cars from emissions regs. If it happens, say sayonara to all pre-1974 cars.

Sad to see that happen anywhere, but the upside is that maybe they'll stop wanting ours!

But 1100 and 1200's won't be correct then

And I don't know how you can really do that to really nice correct stock cars. Think of all the nice KG's running around there?

But yes, I suppose if you didn't mind not being stock, adding some post-1974 EGR and other emissions stuff on them will let them pass, if they can still run with all that gear on them.

IMO I don't think it will happen - but if it does, just think of how many aftermarket businesses may shut down - and then price of parts would probably go up. Just thinking aloud!

Maybe I'm just being cynical:alien

Actually, the last time that was proposed to our parliament was last year... There are always "greenies" who want to introduce blanket legislation to get all old cars off the road. Fortunately, our brothers in the Vintage scene are well organised (and a lot of pollies have the cash to keep historic cars in their garages,) but write to your local member and tell him you are a "Vintage" car fanatic (30 years is the cutoff - which includes most of us.)

I admit I am on the side of being able to modify a car on a reasonable budget, but we also must remember the need to preserve the heritage of our motor industry (Australia still has a name for automotive ingenuity and it has always been guys like us that have come up with the goods.)

What your talkin about may be emmisionstesting on a yearly basis which has been proposed and will be bought in sooner or later. But most liklly you would only need to comply with the relevent ADR standards for your model year. Cant wait till this happens, it means cheap ass people who drive around in smokey (*^boxes will either have to pay to get them fixed or sell them... cheap preferably:)

My Nephew BEAT the System !!!!

It IS illegal to have smoke coming from Your exhaust in NSW... - but for a Diesel - I think they are allowed to blow a bit of exhaust smoke (unburnt fuel) for 3 seconds or something similar. I have a Nephew Who has a late model Diesel 4WD Ute and He was charged with exceeding the smoke limit , at the same time He was photographed by a red light camera... which showed NO Smoke... He took them both to court and beat them , as the photo showed NO smoke while He was accelerating thru the intersection... ( it was a very large intersection ) & HE didn't USE a Solicitor or Lawyer..... this was last year..in Sydney :bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce

Late model Beetles & Karmann Cabriolets in California HAD to meet the emission requirements of the day, which is why they had fuel injection etc to conform .
I don't believe any government will try to make older model cars pass any Later emissions tests - only for their Year of Manufacture...
ONLY cars with computer controlled Fuel INjection & electronic ignition along with Catalytic converters have any chance of passing todays rigid pollution tests...
The Sulpur Content in Aussie Diesel fuel has just been decreased as it caused problems....

Actually, no. There have been a number of attempts in Australia to ban normal registration for pre-emissions cars. All that would be left is the "restricted" regos: club, vintage, special vehicle (which are usually only allowed to be driven on a limited number of days per year - except the "special," of course.)

Fortunately, they have all been defeated up till now - but we must continue to be vigilant and ready to remind our pollies who elects them! Pollies generally don't care a roo's poo about their constituents, but they care about being re-elected.
