anyone just wonder if it cheaper to sand my beetle down to bare metal and send it to a paint shop.pls advise.thanks

Any preparation work undertaken by yourself will save money. Something like stripping shouldn't be a big problem, however sometimes panel
beaters/spray painters will be reluctant to finish the body work that someone has started as there may be more work to correct mistakes. However if it
was just stripped this problem wouldn't exist.

Hi Allan
where would you recommend for the spraying job in gold coast? do you know roughly how much will it cost ?
and also if i would to hire my own air compressor to spray myself, would you advise ...thanks

Unfortunately I haven't had any experience with any paint/panel shops on the gold coast so can't provide a recommendation. If you decide to do it
yourself I am happy to give you any advice/feedback/recommendations - it will be cheaper but depends ultimately on what sort of result you are hoping
to achieve (and how much patience and time you have). I did all of my rust repair, panel work and paint in my garage but it took around 8 months!
(after work, weekends etc).
If you have no gear that can be expensive to set up as well. You could drive around to a few paint shops and ask them if they were willing to spray
the final coat if you did all the prep work, and maybe try to get an idea of cost - if you want them to do it from bare metal be prepared for quite a
hefty price tag. Perhaps Helbus could give you an idea as he is in the trade. Simple things like removing all trim, windows, interior etc etc will
save you a lot of cash. Just remember you will pay someone by the hour, so for every hour of work you can't do yourself you'll have to pay anywhere
between $40-80/hr for them to do.
There is a lot of time involved to do a good job, hence why it won't be cheap ($5-8K at a very rough guess, but a lot less if they were just to shoot
the topcoat over your prep - if you go this way you need to ensure you use primer/sealer etc that is compatible with the paint they use).

thanks again
i just brought the sander with 800grit and start to sand the bug right now with my hand .but i have a problem, where can i get a 50L air compressor
with maybe 2.5 hp...and also after sanding what should i do next ..cause i was told to use etch primer...it is right ...please advise

I was asking the same stuff...ie how to do it if i do it myself, and i ended up readng heaps, the summarising it down to dot points.
it has llink in that same thread, and as u guessed dasduber(alan), dubcrazy(steff) and helbus(pete) are great for asking adive of...pete and steff
work in the industry, and alan did it all himself (he is a well known legend to avd members)
hopefuly reading the other link, and its dot point summary will help.
It basically si alot of hard work, and alot of patience

Fish, definitley be prepared to give it a go. However you must not believe for a moment it will not be hard work. It will be dirty, frustrating and
also rewarding.
There are quite a number of sticky threads at the top of the Paint & Body section made sticky so people like yourself can spend a fair time reading.
It is not just what has been written in those sticky threads, but the questions asked by other members may very well be exactly what you are thinking
of asking.
The other thing to remember too is that a lot of experienced guys dont have set rules or answers to some questions. It becomes experience, gut feeling
and 'just because' Some guys can get the same result with three different types of sandpaper, because they have the experience to alter their work
pattern as required. This is often made necessary due to running out of certain materials, or just plain laziness 
If you are going to strip to bare metal I suggest a fibre backed clean 'n' strip disc. Will go straight on you angle grinder instead of a grinding
wheel and about 4 discs would do the whole car. $16-$20 each depending on grinder size. I wouldn't guarantee Bunnings or Supercheap would have them
or have even heard of them. You need an abrasive specialist (Yellow Pages under Metal Polishers supplies maybe)

firstly, if it is like all veedubbs probably had two or three resprays, if your paint thickness goes over 300 microns you will paint cracking and
crows foot on the panels.
I would personally take the panels back to bare metal, then etch prime and then hiigh fill, then colour coat.
VERY IMPORTANT use only quality paint brands like Spartan or Dulux do not get sucken into brands like concept paints or grebber the paint to use is
the one used by the car manufactures. and use aaa premium general purpose thinners and gunwash to keep the spraying gun clean .
I dont know much about the coast but i would go to a good panel shop on the coast eg like the bmw dealers at soputhport and see where they get their
paint supplies from.
Presitige Paint and Panel Equipment supplies in Brisbane is a good one and Spartan paints at archfield.
If you are doing the whole car you will probably get trade much cheaper than buying secondrate products from the like bunnings and super cheap stay
away from those bandits.
