ok guys let me know, why are fastys seemingly 'unpopular'? i dont get it! i love my fasty :kiss, when dad asked me which 'good car' i wanted, i chose a fasty over a beetle. fastys seem to have issues with selling, even though they can be perfect they sell for way less than a beetle. will this ever change?

Dont worry - it is just a "thing"

People like the early notches more

i own a Super
Supers handle better.
Supers look better
But people prefer the agricultural behaviour of an oval

I also own a comfortable well behaved T3 kombi.

And people try to tell me splits are better :dork:

Ok..... bring it on! :vader

I would love to have an early type 3, a fastback or notchback i wouldnt mind. I dont like the look of the late model type 3's though, or the '68 on beetles. If I had a kombi it would have to be a split or a pre '71. I just think the older models look better. I dont like the "square" look they introduced in the 70's one bit.

It's a very subjective thing. However, there do seem to be trends in the VW scene. These trends vary by country and by state. I was amazed at the difference between Melbourne and Brisbane when we went up for Dubs by the Pub this year. In Melbourne the lowerd with lots of accessories look is very popular, while in Brisbane there were alot more kombis and bajas. Depends on lifestyle to a certain extent. Remember that a lot less type 3's were built in comparison to beetles and kombis.

Liking fastys at the moment is a good thing as you can pick up good ones really cheap. Maybe at some stage in the future trends will change and fastys will become more popular.

thats because bajas are the coolest:P

i didnt see your type 3 there?

i dont know about fastys, ive seen some really nice done up fastys with no bumpers and nice wheels but i dont like them stock.

i would have a notch or square over a fasty unless it was a particularly nice looking one. i was looking for a notch when i found my baja tho now i think id go a square for the extra space.

If you Google VW Type 3 you will be surprised at interest.
Yahoo also seems to be more favourable to VWs

I agree Anth, I'm not particularly interested in beetles, but I do like bajas, they are cool. My fasty wasn't there as we flew up. It was too far to drive for a long weekend.

they are so many ppl on here that LUV type 3's its amazing.
Its just the beetle & kombi are more popular I guess & more well known.
You would be surprised how many ppl don't know what a type 3 is when it comes up next to them....
As always a VW fan will always notice one in the distance coming towards them :)
There is a model for every taste....thats what is good about a VW

I love fasty's. My first VW was a fasty. I was 14.

Main stream dont recognise then as VW. But we all know different. When I buy a good old VW, it will be another type 3 and it will blow commodoors (and FPV - Fifth Performance Vehicles) off at the lights.

You want offroad - go Baja
You want space - go kombi
You want style - go T3.

Haha, I'm with you. I own one and they definetely dont sem as popular as notch's or square's. Ah well, i like to be in the minority. Lets just hope the classic shape becomes a classic in the near future.

I think they are cool, and agree with the trends thing. If 3 people with super slick machine like some of these pics show up at the Nats etc., then everyone will be into 'em. Despite VWs not being mainstream, people still often follow the in-trend - come one, who built Cal Lookers in the 80s/90s???? you know you did....(but I like Cal Lookers)...now it's the year of the rat.

Yes... I remember.... What a machine! I have some pics of it somewhere!
I would like to add my vote for Fasty's....
My dad owned one for years and he always said it was the best car for paper rounds and rallycross he ever owned! My 3rd VW was 69 Fasty (first was a early square, send was an oval) back in the late 80's. Its was slammed (way ahead of its time!), it had a hot 1835 (for the day at least!) and was loads of fun! I drove that car eveywhere... I even drove it to Sydney (From Perth) after it sat in my shed for 3 years (I was overseas).

It is getting hard to find a good one as most of the early ones have been crushed long ago (and the late ones seem to be very rust prone) and they are no where near as popular as TI's and TII's for obvious reasons (more of them were sold), but when compared to Notch's and Square's, its more than likely because more of them were sold here.... But I have to tell you I currently own a late Square, an early Notch, a 60 Ragtop and an 85 T3.... No Fasty's currently!! :(

FUCH your early!

Hi, It raced all over Australia and was one of quickest sports sedans. Even now it would probably run the V8 Supertourers pretty close.

This link has photo of Bryan Thomsons Type 3 fasty.

The running gear etc was later installed in MB 450SLC which was also very quick but did not appeal like the VW.

In answer to original post, not all Type 3 owners wanted to hide in the rear boot! .......................... To understand this you would have to be old enough to remember the tests in the 60s mags showing a person inside the rear boot and being able to close the lid!!! I think it was in "VW Safer Motoring" around 1967.

BUT they looked great in 1966 and still do. The body shape just got lost in August 1969!

I'll be the first to say I hate the way type 3's look, feel, drive, sound etc. They're horrible VW's.
In fact ever since owning 4 (and a 1/2) I drive our main one ('71 fasty) more than our beetle and kombi now!!

yeah ive noticed type 3 are on the up in popularity , fastys are on there way,I noticed notch backs were first then ,square backs this post is an example how it all starts so fastys are in now so go for it , as youll notice most people on here cant contain them selves and own a few cars ,then they get bored or are tempted by a trend of a model they dont have , sell one of their collection and buy that model and so on
