my ej20 n/a turned over fine with a standard beetle starter and a tiny battery. I now have a kombi box and starter and it turns over the same.
an ej20t should be easier than an n/a motor because of the lower compression.

I've heard about stock 6v starters being used in a 12v car on a suby engine but have no experience with it.

I too have a standard 1800 starter turning my NA 2.5l Ej. I reckon the trick is the earthing. I suggest running an extra battery strap from one of the starter mounting bolts back to the -ve pole on the battery. All my starter problems disappeared when I did this.

I run a 2L box with stock 2L starter on my 2.5L high compression V6. So it would have no worries with the suby.

Yep.
Ive got a crapy old 12volt T1 starter that I pulled out of the pile, turning my EJ20T. Its been in there for about 8 years now I think. No probs.
Last year gave it a birthday and bought a brand new 40 buck battery from super crap!
Check the bush in the trans, that needs to be good or new. They are only a couple bucks anyway. Might as well replace it now.

Good luck!
