Umm Rhys,
Sound proofing or insulation is achieved by the material absobing the sound, so won't 'hold the noise'.
Anyway, check out one persons view
http://www.bulley-hewlett.com/VWindex/
I have used a combination of a glass matting (similar to to pink bats) for heat/cold insulation with an overlay of a sound absorbing material. Both
are un affected by mosture and are non flamable. It is a good idea to wrap the glass fiber in plastic to stop them absorbing moisture and rusting out
your panels though.
I havn't finished installing it all yet, but seems to work very well.
The stuff I got was pretty expensive though.

Umm ,
I think what Rhys means is he wants to hear big basses, not his bangin' boxer.

I've done the same with my 68 bug.
I used the tar/rubber mats and then a triple felt layer material. It's much better than before but you can still hear the motor(when the sub is
off, mind you) because I haven't insulated the engine/gearbox side of the rear floor area.
If you put insulation where there are no water/air channels or any direct contact with the outside, you shouldnt have many rust problems(if your car
is not rusting there already).
Cheers

Ive just done this to my van in the last month or so
I got some 'seam sealer' from a body works supply shop and painted/spread this stuff on a very well prepared floor pan of the van ( the van
was guttered )and I also went right up the slopey bit where the back seats sits up against. This stuff will stop any water getting onto the tray
beneath and it will also work as a sound proofer. I removed all my wall panels and used a cavity wax everywhere and after it had dried I put
soundproofing bats in the walls and then sprayed a glue all over them and the metal struts or whatever they are called and covered it all with clear
plastic sealing the entire area from moisture and then I replaced the panel
So did it work??? against temperature? yes it did!!
against noise?? very very slightly

The bats wont do much son!
Go to strathfield car radios or any of the larger car audio places and they can hook you up with some spray on, or paint on sound deadner.
If you really want to go hard core and arent worried about the extra weight you can also add sound deadening mats.
Be warned, neither are cheap in the slightest.
Give the bats a miss...

Fibreglass matts are designed to provide thermal insulation and work very well due to the amount of air trapped between the fibres, which prevents
conduction/convection.
Sound deadening matts are much heavier, and as Quickbug said, quite expensive, but I think they're worth it if you want to hear the stereo
without having to shout over it.

Ok,
I got all of my stuff from Insulation Supplies at Eagle Farm (Brissy) Ph 07 3268 7399
But you should be able to find someone closer.
The products were 25mm Tempmat (fibreglass) ~$350 for thermal insulation, enough to do the engine bay, full roof and behind all side panels.
Also 4mm Noisebar ~$150 for noise insulation, enough to do the engine bay, and behind all side panels.
A little over the top, but works well.

The wife of the guy from the bulley-hewlet link obviously had him under the thumb!
He must have spent a fortune insulating that 'daily' for her!!!
*kombi-kid dont get 'insulation mats as they are too thick to go behind your panels-- get the sound insulation ones!!
I got mine from Bunnings Hardware for $40 and I used about one third of them. You can have the rest if you can get them to Sawtell

the body deadener paint is just a thick Tar like paint isnt it ?
i have an industrial tar paint called Orminoid, my dads pumbing shop sells it will this be good? this plus some type of foam (for heat insulation)?
possibly this type of stuff painted on layers of foam sandwiched together?

I believe the sound deadener foam spray is much better than what VW used over 30 years ago... I have sprayed it everywhere in My beetle but I had
fish oiled everywhere before that.... I have some sticky bitumen-silver sound deadener sheets but they are much too heavy to use... I have also
glued 20mm thick foam matting on all flat surfaces including the roof, to help stop the noise & heat transfer... I used the coloured foam mats
approx 5 ft long used for camping beds etc. approx $20..

Not sure what you mean by felt stuff though (if your question was directed at me?).

Is that foam sond insulation the multi coloured-looks-a-bit-like-carpet-underlay stuff? Whats the best way to adhere it to metal surfaces?

goto your local clarks and get some REALLY dense foam at bout 10-20mm and use paint on contact adhesice (easier to controll than the sprays) ....
should stick REAL good..... drop into your local plumbing store and pick up a 1ltr can of orminoid or bitmuen paint and use that . . . i reckon itll
be cheaper and better than the sound deadener paint.... use thinners or petrol if its a bit thick.... well thats wat i plan on doing for the beetle
these holidays

rolls of foam.. underbody spray.. expanding foam spray.. fish oil..
You can buy it in green or blue usually rolled up at Big W etc and the cheap shops... I just used Selleys "fix all" which sticks just about
anything to anything.... I have used contact cement before... without any hassles. I have completely covered My roof and side panels with this foam...
in the doors, I have sprayed fish oil over it after it was dry.. just to make sure it doesn't hold moisture... I haven't tested it to see
if it holds moisture or not.. I think the water will just roll off it..
I have also sprayed under the guards with underbody spray to stop stone chips and noise.... Lee

im pretty sure that my foam will get covered with some bitumen paint to stop the water geting into it and allowind it to be heavier therefore creating
less chance of resonance...... if i insulate for heat with the glass bats ill use some plastic, glue and tape

chances are the high density foam won't get wet anyway.. I started it right at the top of the door panel and took it down about 3/4 of the way
towards the bottom, as the glass goes very close to the outer door skin about there.. so if it does get water on it, it will just run down to the
bottom of the door... You could spray it with rubberised stone guard or sound deadener.. I'm not sure what bitumen paint would do to the foam
!!
Just fish oil everything.. its the best rust proofer... Lee
