Pedals and Gearstick Interchangability


I'm just cleaning up the floorpan on my 61 Ghia whilst installing a new clutch cable and master cylinder.

Being 6ft 5in with size 11 feet, the early pedal cluster (the close together ones) cause me sometimes to end up pressing the brake as well as the clutch.

I was wondering if you transplant a later model (68-) pedal cluster onto an early chassis. Are the holes in the tunnel etc the same? I understand I might have to drill and weld in bolts for the mounting points but just wanted to make sure.

Whilst we are at it I was also wondering if you can put a later model gearstick onto an early model chassis. I prefer the action of the later sticks and I remember Dave (vw54) saying something about using a Type 3 gearstick!

Steve,
The pedals you can't change unless you move the clutch tube from within the tunnel, as the cltuch hook on the pedal cluster is in a different position to the early ones.
Gearstick shouldn't be a prob though.

Steve you could get the clutch pedal nice and hot and bend it over and inch or 2 toward the tunnel. this will give you clearance for yr size 11s, just check the movement and clearance when the pedal in depressed to the floor.

also you could get some additional clearance by heating and bending the brake pedal the oppisite way.

Yes the Type 3 gear shifter is best even better than all the aftermarket ones put together... simple and origional. You might have to cut a slot in the gear shift rod to allow the shift ball to lock into position.
