lots of custom bits and time to mount and install things like cooling system. $10K + if you pay someone else - but I thought you'd be able to guesstimate this yourself...?

Brad at Custom offroad has a price list on here somewhere, it was around the $9000 drive in drive out mark. This did not include any gearbox mods or brake upgrades.

So about :

$9000 for the conversion
$3000 for gearbox upgrades
$1000 for brake upgrades.

I have not done the conversion so it's best to talk to people like Custom Offroad, or Matt(Boof), they have costed the project out correctly.

Performance whether it air or water cooled always costs $$$$ :thumb

I'm pretty anal when it comes to $$ as I don't make enough to piss it away. I have a reasonably complete spreadsheet of costs to get my project finished and at this stage the number is just shy of 30K. Keep in mind that this is a body off do it right build and I am very handy so most stuff is being done by me. I just don't think there are any shortcuts if you are silly enough to want a 250~500hp bug. I'm pretty sure though I could get an ej20T in a super in good nick for 5~6K but I would not be happy with the end result. Just my thoughts.

Remember those costs are for NA, there is more f#cking around with the turbo and many more little bits and pieces. I have not done my total costs but its under 10k. I think with wise buying I could complete for 5-6k easy.

Here is my V6 conversion cost which may be of some interest. I did almost everything myself and did it on the cheap side. I used as much as possible from the front cut.

Water conversions arent cheap,,, it may not be a subi conversion but my rotary baja engine conversion has recepts just over 10k ,, take in to acount that my car and engine never saw another work shop other then my home garage and all work and fab was undertaken by myself ( minus adaptor plate and flywheel)..

Might help a bit when considering a water cooled conversion price, however the non stop smile when it is all finished and finally runs is all worth it.

Love is a Rotary baja bug
Just be carefull :ninja:,, something dangerous is lurkin in My garage ready to burst out in a fit of Big Hp, high boost baja Rage .

Malcolm, the shifter works on the bench but there is not a lot of room in the tunnel once you have coolant, hydraulic, fuel, and wiring in there. Options wise I am looking at relocating the hand brake to the side of the tunnel and building a bit of a bulge to fit the mechanism in. The next cost is getting the cable length sorted but I guy I know with a gt40 can do them for sane money. Hopefully the pan will be completed by the end of the year and to be honest that's the biggest issue with my build as all the rest is pretty straightforward.

I guess you can see the variation in pricing here. Your getting prices at the low end like me, being $3500 for engine conversion and rear disc brakes (even less after I sold the VW motor), to $9000 drive in drive out at a workshop, to $10000 for thudknuckle when doing it all himself.

thanks for all the replys.if I go ahead with the subie conversion in Victoria I have to have a torsion test done similar to kit cars ie clubman 7,s ,cobras. This is because of the suspension mods I,m doing but these will allow me to run the wheel size and track I want legally also porsche 915 gearbox & ej20t would add 50kg,s + out the back.If I go the the orignal motor a turbo type4 I don,t need to have the torsion test done so I,m in a bit of a dilema.
so thanks again for the replys.
