Notch H6 , V6 or 2.5 and Which g50 box
Ok ive just bought a 72 notch, dont even have it yet. Its coming up from sydney. And ive been reading here and on shop talk for a while. Sounds like
if your serious about reliable big power you need a shit load of cash (relative) and a g50 box.
I spose i have a few questions.
Firstly the g50 box. Are they all the same ratio's
rDont realy need one that does 190mph !
THe Notchback
Which would be the better daily driver h6, ej20t, ej25t.
Turbo lag? To much/not enough Power?
Are there any advantages in the Notch of having a flat motor over a v6 being that it could be messy anyway.Thats going on one ej20t notch conversion
pic i saw.Obviously there are plenty of cheaper v6's around.
I might just go through with it in some form or another. Its been a few years since ive owned a type 3 so i'll see how hard the bug bites this time
around. If i do decide it will be soon. This is the kind of car Noddy would drive. Mabe Noddy's a wolf in sheeps clothing.
Thanks All

having just clocked 6500kms in ej20t powered 68 squareback as a work car, I would seriously think about doing this conversion , it added about 100kg
to overall weight of the car and cost me about 6500 to do the conversion including engineering.

Klaus it sounds good along with the price. How does it drive. What gear box are you running. Any anoying turbo lag?. Hows the sound? Has it got enough
grunt 4 you? What did you get enginered?
hehe got to ask these questions
Im kinda leaning towards the EZ30r being that its probably more the refined motor, beter for every day use. What do you rekon?
Still waiting on her to arive
Thanks for the input everyone
please all give YOUR opinion

The H6 motor would be a big deal for little gain .I have a H6 & there is nothing ( no power above 4500rpm then you have every thing on your plate in
one hit .If the car was not 4x4 it would not stay on the road .
you would be better with a 2.5 motor from a bug eye the other 2.5 ltrs are still having issues with the head gaskets .
The 2.5 ltr pull like a 16 year old boy on heat !
Go & drive a 2.5 ltr subaru manual with a 4.444 gear box & report back here .
at the same time drive a H6 & do the same there only autos so drive it through the gears
I love all the power in the world * but * you can not over look the 2.5 ltr quad cam for a every day driver .
If you dont want the turbo lag , dont get a big turbo ! The VF10 comes on around 2200rpm & the TDO4 lower 2000 there abouts .
A stock WRX JDM auto has a TD04 but with a 4.111 drive line & the hatch back JDM manual has a TD04 ( bigger car ) still with a 4.111 drive
WRX auto turbo motors are around $2300.00 with loom & ecu .
klaus , did you take the V foce guys for a spin ? did hear some storys going around in the west mate .

if I may make a suggestion...and it depends what your engineer says, but I did some maths last year and the 4l lexus V8 should be legal in a late type
3.
the new higher capacity to weight limit (now national) makes it ok. it would be almost cheaper and smoother than either an EJ20t or an H6, and a heap
stronger motor. The 3.8 holden motor and the 380 mitsu motor are also both legal. the question is always gearbox though. but then if you are heading
towards a g50 with tall gearing, a torquey V8 is going to be great behind it anyway. the only drama will be weight distribution, but then you can
always move the drive train forward a few inches and shift the battery and a few other things into the front of the car.
I'm trying to con a mate of mine to go the holden V6 in his late notch, should be tops if he stops stalling and does it.

Hi
I have a JDM G50 for my bug, its the same box that the VWRX runs. The ratios aren't that bad, I did this chart to compare stock 1303 (L bug) ratios
and the G50 at 6000 rpm shift point with a 25.315 inch tyre (235/45x17).
A modified stock VW box will live with higher output motor, it all depends on the nut behind the wheel.
Pete, are the new laws in yet? I cant find any reference to them on the NSW RTA site.

mmmm, they came out last year, so I can't see why not. I've notive the RTA tends to leave lots of useful things off the site. either that, or they
are buried in bulletins and you can't find them easily. I'll have to ask my mate the engineer.

THanks for the input fellas, keep it coming!
V8 would be insane, I should check the dimentions although like you said the weight and distribution......... , Wouldn't say it's overkill though.
It would be good for towing and blowing away most things.
Steve they seem good ratios.
looks like at the moment the ej25t is the most sensible option for the notch. Its tried and tested as they say and as you say Seagull.
I've got a lot of home work to do on this now but im gonna ask some anoying questions anyway
Firstly which ej25t? where can i get one? Should i build my own from an n.a. short block ?
What do i need to mate the motor and g50box? Anyone got one 4 sale?
What other questions should i be asking?
My budget is capable but no not exbendible.
Im in the process of attaining metal fab tools, not purely for the notch alone but other aswell. That will help.

Seagull I'm meang the ej25t motor itself is tried and tested for power not the conversion itself. And your right you didnt recomend the turbo. I do
talk shit sometimes. THe computer screen does things to my brain. I'll give you a call mate. Guess i could start off n.a. and go from there but
hmmm. The 2.5 is a big can of worms in itself. Just been reading a few forums and they're getting seriously BIG numbers from the 2.5 turbo's.

the 2.5litre turbo would cost significantly more to purchase than the 2litre turbo which is why the 2litre turbo is such a good base.
can still get large power from a 2litre turbo....300rwhp not enough for ya? hahahah

Hi Pete
I spent about 1/2 hour searching the RTA website all I found where the old regs, maybe they don't want to tell anyone about them. From memory the new
wheel size limitations sucked.

WhooooWhaaaaaaHaahaahaahaaa!
Just kiddin but the low down torque of the 2.5 may be the better every day driver depending on how you set it up. Theres tons of information on the
n.a.'s and ej25t's ive just got to sift through it all but please keep all your opinions comin
THere should be another thread "ej20t vs ej22t vs ej25t vs ez30r vs ej20,22,25 n.a."

I think we have a winner! :bounce
1916, according to the new capacity/weight limits, the late notch should be able to have about a 4.1 litre atmo motor.

I think these were accepted.

I'm interested in how type threes will perform with all this power . How much is to much.Theyre certantly light up front. V8 would be alittle heavy
wouldn't it? or is it all in how you set the car up?

porsche manage a 40/60 weight split in 911s with 3.8 litres 6s. And that's with a shorter wheelbase than a notch. If you think hard and be
deliberate, you should be able to get that out of the notch with the V8 in it. I guess it would mean things like fibreglass rear fender and boot,
moving the battery up front, moving the engine and tranny forward. Having anything at the rear of the car constructed with lightness in mind.

Takhoal nice link mate.
Like the idea of fibreglass fenders on the rear, especially if theyre wider, allowing a wider track.Dunno if thats leagl. The front would be a must
aswell. I've been thinking there are a bolt on wheel arches like the torana slr5000, land rover defender, others?
But seriously a 2.5 sti block has got way enough power potential mabe not as smooth and predictable as a six or eight ,It would Retainin use of the
boot, have less weight keeping the car more nimble.
How do you guy's rekon the notch would go as a semi off road orientated kit, with the flared guards i mentioned alowing for bigger fatter 4x4 tyres,
bull bar, side steps, spotlights and because of the weight of the bullbar why NOT? slap in the 1uzfe for good measure. Perfect balance! I do live on a
dirt road and my cars are always muddy!
The confusion persits but Confucious say....... Confusion, Confer and yea shall Concive.
SHUT UP
Your all brilliant
