Herbie goes to Speed on Tweed
Am running Herbie at Speed on Tweed next weekend- having not ran there before it should be interesting. I appear to be the only Beetle running this
year and am classed with 3 Cooper S's a 64 GT Cortina and a Hillman Imp. and given the speed of the Mini's am not expecting any big results... but
it will be fun.

Specs
CT,
Motorwise it is pretty stock - 1600tp with ported Scat heads and twin Kadrons, 009, dog house cooler. Motor is fairly healthy but have not had it
apart (yet) Recently rebuilt standard 1500 box. Am happy with the engine for the category of events I compete in (naturally I would like more- but
that will come).
Has just changed to a bj pan, with whiteline bars all round and cross drilled brakes etc. KYBs all round, extended shock towers - pan is fantastic and
the car now handles great. Has a steel half cage all Cams approved with full harnesses etc. Am running Falkens 14/195/50's though cant recall the
series - seem to be good tyres- have only done the recent Leyburn sprints with them and it rained for most, but they have to be better than my old
radials I was running last year.
It has a horn speaker under a front guard with a CD player in the glovebox that plays the Herbie theme when competing. It is so loud you can hear it
clearly for most of the lap, though with the helmet on I hardly hear it in the car, hence it is fairly popular with the spectators (even if they are
under 5)

Hi Peter,
I think your car looks excellent.
By the sound of the specs its probably a very capable package that should surprise a few people (Especially with the herbie music).
Do you have the big adjustable whiteline bars or the small ones. I think my front is 16mm and my rear is 18mm. My big adjustable ones work better off
the car I found.
Have you got a good seat to hold you still?

CT,
The front bar is 16mm and rear 18- not sure on specifics as to what is big and what is small.
Have two race seats so its all nice and cosy.
I would like to upgrade the exhaust from the pea shooter extractor system it has now, but I dont want to lose the period look with the twin pipes.. do
you know of a system that would suit. Most that I see are the Fatboy style with the single side pipe.
Will post some photos when I get back.

Exhaust
That's a tough one.
There are after market systems that exit in the standard cut outs.
I think you can either go with a cheap one that's compact and doesn't flow well or sound good. Or you can go with an expensive one that flows well,
sounds good but uses about a kilometer of pipes and weighs a tonne.
I use a 1 5/8 berg/phoenix header which is great quality. It seals well and doesn't foul the apron at the number 2 header or at the flange. I cut it
back and welded up my own bends to a 2 inch straight through muffler just so it would tuck up under the body as much as possible for ground clearance
and so it didn't look too rude (aka fat boy style). Unfortunately it looks a bit tatty after having an altercation with the tramp bar I used to run,
then it broke one of the flange bolts and I dragged it around oran park raceway for a lap and a half scraping along the ground. Ather all that it
wasn't worth ceramic coating. Interestingly when the exhaust was dragging along 2/3 of the exhaust from the header was escaping without having to go
through the muffler so there was no restriction at all. The result was that the car didn't want to rev over 4500 which shows how important the
exhaust system is from the header back.
Col Mayman from Tammworth stumbled across a good exhaust guy who can make vw exhausts to suit your engine and application. Perhaps he could come up
with something. But you'd have to be pretty settled on your engine spec and commit to it for the long term.

As CT suggested i have come across a guy in Tamworth who can custom make an exhaust system to suit your motor spesc and specific application.He is a
genuine car lover and used to make systems for Formula Vee cars in Sydney.

Made it ...
Well that was an interesting weekend- fantastic actually.
Didnt get off to the best of starts, backing the car off the trailer on the Friday I noticed the stereo didnt come on (and it always annoyingly does)
so took the car down to the street parade along with the FJ and couldnt believe how popular the parade and the car was. There were people
everywhere
Come Saturday - briezed through scrutineering though the officials have become so accustomed to the music they weren't going to pass it if the music
wouldnt play. I then pulled the CD player out and pulled it to pieces, but couldn't find anything obvious so off to the local Auto store and
purchased a new CD player and fitted it up without losing a run. Thankfully the new model was still compatable with the wiring plug and even the same
remote works, so now I have a spare. (I wouldn't think many people have had that sort of drama)
As for performance the car lacked a lot of power and sounded off - which I found to be that bloody exhaust that I spoke of earlier. When I put the
exhaust back on during the week, I didnt have the normal tin gaskets and used the paper style.. never again. I thought they were suspect so I bought a
couple at a VW place at Burleigh on the way down. It took a few runs to get everything sorted as had some other niggling things but as you can imagine
it started raining and I had a few runs in the wet.
Given the cars I was up against, I didnt have a chance of a place and my only opposition was my brother in the FJ (in a different class but that didnt
matter- it was family pride) I was chasing him all weekend and he was ahead by .5 sec, but the results were just posted and I beat him by .9 sec on
the last run... and now he is not answering when I want to skite.
Anyways the car went back on the trailer with nothing broken, dented or scratched (unlike many others) After the major work the car has had recently I
am still ironing out some issues, but am getting closer and hopefully by the next event at the Noosa Hillclimb it will be fully sorted.
Overall I had a great weekend, the car was well received - just wish I had more power...
Will post some pictures later tonight when I get the camera back.

Have attached a promo for the Hillclimb, Noosa is the week after the Aust Championships at Mt Cotton so they are trying to entice some of the big guns
to stay a bit longer and do Noosa - it is a great weekend, but I think Speed on Tweed is my new favourite (and closer to home)

Yep the Neg Camber was on the list of things to do and will be done by the next event. I was thinking 2degrees - would that be a good starting point.
The car gets trailered to events and only does limited street driving.

yeah 2 deg, but you may need some 'worn' link pins to achieve that without binding of components. Try some caster, too
