LSD

Does anyone know how to get a LSD diff in a VW's gearbox?

Really all i want to do is put two blackies at the burnout areas at the drag strip.... but would love to be able to also have two wheels driving the car....

Maybe some offroad gurus can point me in the right direction?

Quaife do an LSD for the VW gearboxes - from memory (there are people on the forum better informed than I, and this topic has come up before) they were about $4000 AU landed.......

What have you got in your bug that will do nice burnouts then ????

Your profile says you are in Northam - my old man teaches at Northam senior high - he occasionally drives his 62 beetle to work - you cant miss it, its bright Barbados Green, flared rear guards and 235's on the back, no bumpers. He's the Treasurer of the VW club of WA too...

good links Andy :thumb

The 002 kombi box's had a factory LSD (so my manual says) but I have never seen one.

So is your car used on the street much?

If you don't mind severe understeer and braking axles you could weld the diff solid.

Anyone using the Peter Debiasi Quaife copy. Good price, but wondering what's it like for quality and longevity.

Cheers.

Expensive way to leave rubber on the drag strip...

Personally i would like not to leave any just have instant grip n blow the driver in the other lane away.

last time a Quaiff was imported i dont think there was much change out of $5000 with all the other bits you need as well.

Kombi CV and output shafts, Porsche axles, gearbox overhaul, different ratio gear sets, etc.

Many consider an LSD a poor choice on a Dub, upsetting cornering (suddenly going from over- to understeer can be a problem.) If it's going to be strip-only, a spool is pretty cheap - otherwise you will probably find a "super-diff" and good hook-up will achieve the desired result.

moonlite,, My brother has an L box with quaife and lowered ratios,
Built by Henry,
Now that he is putting auto into his race car , He was talking about selling the box...
for far less than 4k,
He would love to put the quaife into his new auto box but talks with Henry this week I believe will rule that right out.
If you are interested, I could find out the exact details...

Hi

Im running a quaiffe in my bug, the only thing that notice different from an open diff is the lack of wheelspin out of corners, otherwise it drives like an open diff car.

Dont fit a spool or CIG locker, break a CV in you will do an instant 90 deg turn.

Hi,
In reply to Bugmeister, been driving a bug with one of Peters diffs and am very happy. The quality is definitely there but cant comment on longevity cause ive only gone a few thousand mile. Its like Steve said, you cant tell the difference between it and a stock diff until you floor it and see two black marks behind you. Its very, very smooth, quiet and non-violent.
And its real easy to hang the back out. Have fun, Keith H.

sh*t hey

Ok first off, Doug Sweetman, i know your dad, i admire his VW a fair bit... hows that hey, small world. I actually am a student at Northam Senior High School at the moment...

Also this infomation is helping me out a heap, but do people think that there is no point in putting a quaife LSD in the VW....

Also my VW runs a 2L twin port

It's not that there's no point to it, it's more because a Quaiffe costs a LOT of money, and most people can find better ways to spend it. :)
