62 kg wiring loom
hi, i want to replace my 62 ghia wiring loom. i have a new loom from usa [lhd] i still have the old loom in the car. who has done it, how did u do it.
any hints pictures anything or problems encountered will help. thanks greg

hahaha u guys r funni,............... so who has done it. who has pulled another wiring loom thru the small hole up inside the bonnet compartment into
behind the rear side trim n thru the hole there out under the back of the car. i was thinkin of tying the old loom to the new one n try to pull it
thru. but i dont want to start without hearing if anyone has tried n it got stuck. the loom i have is in 4 sections and seems too big to fit and it
says to do it in its 4 diff parts ex part a part b part c part d

I have done it on a beetle. I threaded the biggest one through first and then just threaded the smaller ones through after that. The front was the
hardest as the hole at the back was larger. It prpbably doesn't hurt to put some talcum powder on the rubber grommet as well to help them slide
through.

i would personally tie the old wiring loom to some fairly thick steel wire(fencing or so, something which flexes easy enough) pull the old through and
then tie the new to the wire and pull through, rub a bit or grease or something on to help it

thanks for the replies. the kit is made by american autowire and sold by watson streetworks, very nice setup. i found the fuse box and rest of the
stuff, read the instructions about 10times. hopefully the old loom will come out easily and their be enuff room for the new one. vw must have never
thought the old would ever be replaced when u look at where the kg exits from behind the dash.the lhd cars ran down from the drivers side and across
the rear, so hopefully it will be long enuff since rhd is all on same side of the car [fuseboxfront/starter rear same side.but is is for abug, i might
have to lengthen as dave said hope not.

Wrong,
Up to August 1965 the wiring loom was run in the sills on the right hand side. In a tube actually. After August 1965 the wiring loom ran down the left
side of the car but inside under the kick plate on top of the sill. RHD and LHD cars weren't different except for the part under the dash.
So for a '62 the wires for a LHD car would extend across the car. So if you had to use a loom for a RHD car you would need to SHORTEN the loom under
the dash to make it work. If were the case for a '66 model, then you'd have to lengthen it. I've got a '66. I've that problem.
When you pull out the loom have a trace wire pull through with it. You can use that race wire to drag in the new loom.
There is a mob in Melbourne who claim they make a 62 loom for about $500 for RHD Ghias.

the drivers side of a lhd is the left side, if u look at the pics on jbugs site u can see the 56-73 is on the drivers side of a lhd car.

Yeah I had a look at Jbugs and I see what you say. Still I think the picture is wrong. The fact remains, no matter where the steering wheel is,
56-65 loom runs on the RHS, 66 to 74 loom runs on the LHS .
This is a picture of a Passenger side Sill from a RHD '65. That tube is the one I mentioned earlier on the LHS of a RHD car.
Here's a photo of a RHD 1960. you can see the loom coming past the glovebox and under the radio where it is held by a steel band to the underdash.
Where the sheath ends you can see the thick red wire to the light switch. (right next to the radio). The other end of that connection is on the
battery + (or regulator output) Clearly this shows it running down the RHS of the car and shows why I think the Jbugs drawing is wrong.
You are in the lucky position of having a pre 66 RHD car and you can get by with the LHD loom. You only will need to shorten the lengths under the
dash. That's much better than having to splice stuff on.
