fitting reduction boxes onto beetle gbox
do reduction boxes of a split kombi fit straight onto a beetle gbox?
I have good beetle gbox (62 swing axle) and am looking at getting a splitty gbox which jumps out of 2 nd gear.
can I just pulll the axles and reduction boxes of the kombi box and bolt them to the beetle box?

If its to go into a beetle you would prob be better off finding a Country Buggy gearbox and putting that in, If you use a Kombi box you have to make
adaptors to bolt the reduction box to the beetle spring plate.

I know that but they are not as common and I can get this one at the right price
also I have a friend that has a country buggy and he'd let me borrow his brackets to copy.
unless someone has a complete country buggy gbox out there? anyone?

Marcel,
when I built my rear end for the Desrt Bug I used a '65 1200 beetle box and took the diff center out of one side and popped it in the other side
put it all back together using Country Buggy axles and reduction boxes. These are straight off '67 1500 Kombis with the shocker mount cut off and
a special adaptor fitted. If you are able to borrow some of these adaptors it wouldn't be too hard to copy them. The inner brackets that are on
the CB axles are off a Barndoor transaxle and these could be made up easy enough. I used the 1200 box (4.375 to 1)to get a lower final drive ratio
(5.5 to 1) using the 1500 kombi reduction boxes (1.26 to 1). If you use 1200 kombi reduction boxes (1.4 to 1) you get 6.1 to 1 final drive but smaller
brakes.
There is no need to set up the diff backlash again as the pinion gear is center between the sideplates, so what was set on one side will be the same
when installed in the other side.
I had no trouble at all with setup in approx 9000ks of fairly heavy offroad running.

how strong are the reduction boxes? could it be grafted onto a 70's baja kombi?

Secoh,
the reduction boxes carry a Kombi around with up to 1 tonne payload so I doubt you could break them on a beetle. My Baja weighed in at 1.6 tonne on
the Desert trip.
There would be no difference fitting them to a '70 than to a '60.

Sorry Secoh,
I missed the kombi bit, it has been done by a guy in QLD who I spoke to a few years ago. He had a mid '70s Baja Twincab running a 2.5lt motor
thru an upsidedown 2lt box (to make run backwards) fitted with reduction boxes driving 33x12.5 offroad tyres. He says it works well. There is pic of
him towing a Landcruiser Trayback out of a creek on Fraser Is. Do a search under "Baja Bus" and you'll find it.

thanks for that info!
Might have an easier solution than the upside down box too, the renault 20 5sp box i'm fitting into my superbug already has the diff going the
"wrong" way so you wouldnt need to flip it, and it's twice as strong as the kombi box. only downside is the 3.8:1 diff ratio (lowest
available I think is 4.2:1?)
hmmm...lots of ideas....
