high speed track issue??


Just a question on handling at higher speeds

My car drives fine and handles well - most of the time

The only time I have an issue is if I change lanes on a multi lane free way at higher speeds.
Not that I would drive in excess of 110km/hr - but lets just assume for the sake of arguement that I did :no:

As I said -
if I drive straight - fine
if I go round a corner - fine

The issue I have is when I go to and changle lanes and hit the cats eyes I seem to get a quick twist/pull/track issue. Sort of like a very quick left right??

Nothing major - just a bit of a pull/wiggle

Hard to test but seems to be only when i hit cats eyes??
Not many places I can test without lane markers
Dont believe it is an issue if I drive on a single lane and go to overtake

Is it just the fact I am running wide wheels??
Rear wheel alignment?

NO get a torsion bar front end never a problem with them

How wide are your tyres? Very wide tyre can 'tram-line', particularly if the wheel alignment is not spot on.



I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

Hi

Caster is fixed but it can be adjusted if adjustable strut tops are fitted or a new sway bar with caster adjustment built in.

Like Greg said its just tram tracking, I get it in mine when I have big rims on.
Bout the only downside to having wide tyres on.

I generally do my own alignments but a good computer one by a tyre shop can usually get rid of it.
I fixed my castor problems with lowered swaybar and castor fix bushings from topline,

I've been trying to figure out what the cats eyes had to do with your problem.:spin: OK, they usually put them on the join - where the lanes of hot-mix meet,right? Those joints are not always even or level, and when the tyres hit that uneven joint, the tend to follow the crooked line.:td: That's known as 'tram lining' (or 'tram tracking', if you are from the Northern Rivers area) - the wider the tyres, the worse it is, usually. Maybe that's why those V8 Super-duper car drivers keep hitting each other - they use VERY wide tyres.:lol::lol::lol:

have you tried holding onto the wheel tighter ????

Mate do yrself a favour and convert it to a torsion bar no more clunks or bangs

What toe in do u have maybe a little more may get it tracking better

Then get the council to widen the road so that you can turn your car around, and in return you can plough fields for them with the tractor suspension

I agree with this and I love my Super! The front end design just does like to shake and shimmy around. You've done well to only have it happening at high speeds, mine sometimes does it a 60km/h. Tried new bushes and so forth, but I think it's just basically an inherent flaw in the design. The only thing which always cures it for me is putting weight in the front. When I'm helping a mate work on his car and load up with a heavy floor jack, axle stands and other tools then the car drives beautifully. With no load in the front the ride is not as nice and it occasionally gets the 'superbug shimmies'.

Hi

I haven't had the shakes since I went to Urethane bushes.

When you lower a Super you actually take caster away, the wheels get pushed toward the back of the car.

Try some caster fix bushes, I have some you can borrow if you want, I took them out my sons bug as they made the tyres touch the front edge of the mudguard, we only have fag paper of clearance at the best of times.

more caster will help at high speeds. not enough caster will cause twitchiness and instability at high speeds.
Polyurethane bushes help enormously. I know first hand :yes: :tu:
