71 Squareback resto (newbie)
Hi all, just got this off my uncle, first project car and basically first car i've pulled apart at all. Found some nasty stuff just today that i
haven't taken pics of yet but that will come. Basically the fella who sold it to my uncle decided to fill up a hole with expanding foam before
bogging it. Wanker.
First day, took out seats and trimming. Seats are pretty much in tact, bottom of front seats split at seam... (is this repairable with out re-lining
it?)
Second day took back side panel and did a few other things.
Because of the expanding foam there is rust in the top corner above the vent at the back and above the back door fairly bad, the part where the hinge
is welded to has rusted through and come off. is it possible to just weld a plate in there and then weld the hinge to that plate?
There are a few of these along the edges of these panels:
right hand side, this hinge seems to be ok:
Left hand corner, from inside:
Outside:
Left hand bottom, where the bumper bolts on to:
Just behind the left rear wheel:
Inside front wheel arch:
Left hand corner of the boot:
Other side of that:
Battery area:
Right rear wheel arch:
right side under the panel:
Judging from simply looking around this doesn't seem too bad :S
Battery area i figure is easy, cut and then put a plate down and weld both inside and out.
Hinge area I'm a little less confident about being that i have done very little welding and certainly not on any car,
Boot i am also hazy, as i don't know what it's actually supposed to look like haha
Is it best to overlap the steel when welding? or should i cut to fit and weld from the back and then use filler?
Also do i use the same thickness steel for all?
What is the best way to get rid of the rust along the bit just under the window and other places you can't remove to get to...just pour some rust
remover or converter down there and hope for the best? :S
Any help would be awesome!

ps... is there a trick to getting the windows out, i took the metal bit out which i figure should have loosened it, but no luck.

the expanding foam was put there by the w#nker at vw common on vw s of the period super bugs lbugs all suffered the same sound deadner treatment it
would seem
on my car being a 1970 model avoided the foam treatment best too remove as much foam as possible alot of poking around to prevent the stuff catching
fire
when you weld asfor the rust you will have too make up some repair patches then start removing the rot and welding them back in work on 1 section at a
time start with the easiest 1st your skills will improve as
you progress

Yeah it just seems a bit daunting atm, i keep finding more haha. The guy seems to have put some galv plates in at the front and put massive amounts of
sealer behind and on them to keep them in place.
Will post some more pictures when i get paid and can start cutting out the rot

im also new and and doing a 71 square resto, my ones rusted in same places exept hole in roof is only of drivers side and is a big hole im looking for
replacesment sheet metal pannels now or i might just get flat sheet and do it myself keep up with the pictures its good to see someone lese going
through what i am too

removing windows dont touch the chrome moulds leave them in so they dont get damaged you dont take off to remove glass are you going too refit with
same rubber? or new you can buy without chrome to put them back the chrome goes in rubber when rubber is on glass as for removing lay on your back and
push them out with your shoes off using a steady even pressure have someone on the outside to catch the window i hope this makes sense

oops, already took one of the chrome bits out, oh well ill just get a new one, good thing i had only tried one haha.
well from what ive seen its not as bad as it could be, especially as it was in marburg during the floods and the water came up to about the top of the
wheel arches i believe

you can't buy new "chrome bits" (actually polished and anodized aluminum).
you can only buy plastic (mylar) trim. Shit imho

I just finsihed spraying a 73 square a few weeks back. My windows had to be cut out in the end. The seals were that old and crusted on I couldn't get
them out with out a major chance of cracking the glass. Even when i cut the seals the rubber had bonded some how to the frame via 40 years of sun
exposure or whatever. They were still really hard to pop with no rubber holding them in the frame. Might just be easier to get new ones from ISP west

first thing i did was throw a coat of paint on the asbestos walls to seal it.

haha cheers for the thought, but i believe these ones are made out of a concrete paste, pretty dodge though, the timber frame isn't attached to the
concrete supports, just waiting for them to fall on me

hey mate,
i didn't know where to start either, so i just pulled the inside apart, if the motors working probs not a big issue to begin with, well that's what
i reckon anyway.
I want to kill all the rust before i do much else... for this you may need to get the engine out at some point though... i need to take some more
pictures, ive since lowered both front and back and taken the engine out while i wait for funds haha

only reason i mentioned the motor was they posted before they needed a new motor if you are committing to a
resto it is a good idea to have a complete vehicle to start off with to many cars get pulled apart never to see the road again under estimating the
amount of funds time and effort required .thus committing to an engine purchase or repair to keep motivated to see the job through to completion
otherwise part the way through you will still have to budget and think about getting a working motor .if the motor is to much trouble and expense now
will that change when you are restoring the car?
