Strongest VW gearbox that'll fit a Type 3 chassis?
Hey guys,
I'm contemplating my options in regards to possible engine and gearbox combinations in my Sabre Mk2, which is currently fitted with a 4AGE and 4
speed VW gearbox.
If I decide to keep the 4AGE I will be chasing a bit more power (180-200hp) and wanted to know what VW gearbox would be best suited to try and handle
this sort of power?
I've read the 091 Kombi boxes are the strongest, but I'm not sure if they'll fit into the Type 3 VW chassis?
If so, are they any chance of handling the power if driven sensibly?
Would I still be able to use the Sherman adapter that I have or do they have a different bell housing?
Thanks, Paul.

anything fits with a little persuasion lol
built 091 with beetle nose cone, bellhousing & different mounts?
what about a porsche 915/ 901?
subie with adapter?
no matter what you do a compromise will have to be made, either strenght, price or how far back its mounted
hellbugged has a kombi box in the notch with an ej, should be fine

Thanks.
At the moment the two obvious options are 4AGE with VW box or EJ20T with Subarugears Suby box. The main factor between the two obviously being the
price.
I can get the power I want from the 4AGE, it's just a matter of whether I can get a reasonably relaible VW box to suit. If I get the 091 box fitted
with the beetle nose cone, bellhousing etc, will it end up being the same length as a T1 box? I can't afford to move the 4AGE back any further, so
this will most likely be the "make or break" for this option.
Would that also mean I could use the engine adapter I already have?
Don't think the Porsche box is really an option. If I'm going to have to change from a VW box, I'll more than likely go with the Subarugears 5
speed box and EJ20T conversion. Main problem with that besides cost, is the legality of it in QLD at the moment.

The UN5 wont fit your type 3. I have on here if you want a look. They are longer so need the torsion bar housing/suspension heavily modified, also the
gearing is more suited to 31" tall (or bigger) tyres, they have 5.85:1 diff ratio!

By the sounds of it , even with the 091 box , you will want to run a 1600 / 1800 002 style bell housing and input shaft as the stock o91 bell
housing/ and input shaft will move the motor back 20 more millimetres than 002 style box
The only downside of this is that you can't run the 228mm clutch easily , if at all but a custom built high pressure 215mm will be ok
PS Subagears website shows some good dimensions of the 091 , just take the 20mm 0ff
Don't let body work get in the way of real suspension travel
