VSS Triggering
I thinking of fitting an electronic speedo to my Baja. I'm starting to get sick of muddy water finding it's way into the wheel bearings because of
the cable.
I have a brand new VDO Electrical Speedo here which can be used with a number of triggering types.
I've made the decision to go with an oscillator sensor.
For all those of you that are running a VSS can you please post some pictures and info on how you have you sensor set up to read?
I've seen people mount them so they read off the heads of the CV bolts on the rear. This would be a plus cause I can mount it on the gearbox so it
doesn't have to bounce around on the suspension. But the big issue i run into with fitting it to the rear wheel is that I frequently drop my tyre
pressures when offroading, this can vary the diameter of the tyre by quite a bit and throw the speedo out.
This is why I'm leaning towards fitting it to the front. It'll move with the suspension but I don't let my front tyres down as often, and when I do
it isn't by as much.
The idea I have it to fit it so that it is inside the disc rotor and reading onto the back of the studs that are pressed into the disc.
What are peoples thoughts on this?
Any help is appreciated.

The inductive proximity sensor I used for mine is supposedly weather proof.
All I can say is its been getting saturated every time i drive in rain or wash the car for the last 2 and a half years and is still working fine.
You could mount it inside the front hub to sense the wheel studs if there is enough room there, they are abit long.

Can you remember where you picked yours up from??
I'm going to be running the Commodore front discs so they have a little more room inside them then the Beetle stuff.

Yep I picked it up on ebay.
The seller was http://myworld.ebay.com.au/veederline/ but he doesnt
have any listed but if you sent an email he could probably line one up
If not just search Inductive proximity sensor on ebay.
Mine was NPN (negative pulse) and keeps both the Subaru engine management and my digital Head up speedo display happy and accurate with 5 pulses per
wheel revolution.

What I've decided to do with mine (and I'm in the process of buying),is keeping the stock speedo in it's position (keeping in mind dash
modifications for a 1303 are a pain), and adding one of these babies to it:

I just haven't figured out where I'll mount the antenna yet. Either on the dash (which fortunately a 1303 actually has), or on a bumper bracket.
Keeping the stock speedo will allow me to know what speed I'm doing in tunnels where the GPS will die, especially seeing I'll get some idea of its
accuracy when compared to the GPS in normal use.

I'm skeptical of those GPS speedos.
I know just with my ordinary GPS speed is sometimes effected by tunnels, buildings even big hills etc like Craig mentioned.
Even just going up and down steep hills can make it read slow.
Works well on the flats though.

Hi
I really like Joel's HUD, my GPS is hopeless in the city and sometimes it has trouble locating satellites on startup on a murky day.
On my sons bug I used a SPA speedo, it came with a pickup and magnet, Im using a simlar speedo in my other bug and it uses the a VDO VSS that is also
used for the Subaru motor.

For the time being I'm just going to run with a 52mm tacho and oil pressure and temp, which can fit in the gauge panel of the 1303. At this point
I've run out of cash for anything more fancy for the dash. My grandiose plans have a habit of hitting reality! Once the money tree regrows and I get
the rest of the interior done then maybe I'll get fancy, but if I'm happy with how it's all working I might just leave it.

The only problem with this is that my car doesn't even see half of the speed that the speed goes up to!!
Plus I was also a little skeptical of the GPS unit to work properly at all times.
Plus I really don't want to spend that much money. I already have the VDO gauge which came with another car that was an unfinished project. It's
brand new. And all I basically need to do is buy a sensor and make a mount, then wire it up. Then find something that it's happy to read off.
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, lets keep this thread rolling.
