subie 5 speed into bug

Hi guys, just trying to understand whats required of a subie conversion into a late bug.
can you confirm?

- IRS conversion - normal conversion with standard conversion brackets
- Full assembled subie gearbox with reversed pinion gear and subaplug
- redrilled/blocked fill/drain holes in box
- New mounts - No front gearbox mount as such, but an engine mount using framehorn bolts. as per subarugears.com. Are the dims on there OK to avoid cutting the rear valance and wings?
- Gear-lever attachment to fabricate as per subarugears.
- Clutch - push or pull? is hydrulic clutch needed? what are the options?
- Axles - which do i use?
- Spcers for rear body mount (next to suspension) to raise body over engine - Will this be sufficient to clear?

Is that it? What other tips are there?

Cheers

steve

Are you trying to run it with the VW engine?

you would probably have to do a full body lift, just doing the back would require a crazy tapered section under the heater channels.

Would be much easier to just leave all the body stock and fit a EJ.

If you're fitting an EJ engine with your subie 5 speed :

Normal IRS conversion if you still have a swing axle setup.
Subarugears converted and shortened 2WD box with Subaflanges.
Type 2 inner CV's and 15 5/8" drive axles.
Manufacture the engine mount and nose mount as per the Subarugears.com website.
Drill a gearshifter hole next to the current gearshifter hole (above the torsion bar) using a holesaw.
Cut a little bit of clearance in your tunnel access hole for the subie nosecone and shift rod.
Bolt your VW shift rod to the Subie shift rod.
Tiny bit of clearancing on 1 inner weld on the right hand pan fork
Body rear firewall clearancing between seat belt mounts to clear nosecone (done with hammer or cut n shut box section)
No need for spacers for rear body mount.

If you are using a Quad Cam engine - you need to specifiy the extended Subaflanges and then have your drive axles custom shortened for the correct measurement.

Clutch depends on which engine/clutch/box combo you use.
Standard engine can use push type clutch with your VW cable or with a Subaru hydraulic master & slave.
Turbo engine can use either late model push clutch or pull clutch with a Subaru hydraulic master & slave - the clutch is too much hard work for your leg with a cable.

Guys we will be at the VW nationals again this year - Sunday 27th May. Come by and say hello and have a look at all the detail of the parts and of some actual installs. Going to have an EJ20 turbo buggy, EJ25 buggy and an EJ25T buggy on the Subarugears trade stand. There should also be a few beetles at the show running a Subarugears 5 speed. If you go to the Supersprint on Saturday 26th May look out for the beetle with EJ20 turbo motor and newly fitted Subarugears 5 speed.

Hope to have a few new things to show you like the cast nosecone, laser cut engine and trans mounts, auto box. The pressure is on now.....trying to get people to finish things up for me.
