Can the seal/bush on the nose cone be removed iwith G/box in car???
Hi
replaced My semi automatic gear shifter lever last week and had the oval inspection plate off under the rear seat.
I noticed that there is an oily film over the bottom of the tunnel
when I wiped the the shaft coming out of the gearbox it was Hypoid oil..
so. it looks like the seal has been leaking??
I put a couple of tubes of nulon additive in the Gearbox about 6 months ago. and it was full + with the nulon in there..
anyway, it looks like I have replaced the bushing/seal in My other two gearboxes but not this one????
so, Do You think it can be removed with the gearbox in the car???
I can touch it with My finger... lol... so...
has anyone ever replaced it in the car???
maybe need a special extractor made or a BIG HOLE SAW 
a fellow in the USA replaced His heads and pistons & cylinders while the engine was in the car... lol [why??? Who knows]

I doubt it Lee. No room to work in down there even if you could screw a self taper into the seal for extraction.

must be an easier way??
You just grab hold of the bush and pull as You turn back and forth and it all comes out.
the ones I used before were one piece
seal was in the bush...
glue another seal on the end of it??

it easy when you can get to it but thats the whole problem. No space to work with down there and can't even see what you're doing.
For the time it'd take ya to figure out how to get it out in situ and then fiddle with removing it I say it'll be quicker to whipped the engine and
box out as one unit if you have a big enough trolley cradle or take each out seperate. reckon it'll be easier and quicker.

I would rather spend half a day changinging the bush and seal in the car than pull the motor and box, i just went down and checked the coupling in
the ghia, i would think about 1 hour to change the seal in the car, plenty of room to fit a battery drill in there if you just do the seal, you could
remove the hole bush and seal if you were carefull, not to much of a interference fit for the bush if i remember correctly. just need to carefully
lever it out on both sides at the same time

Lee, is there much movement in the rod with the coupler disconnected?
Mine was leaking the same but after half a million KMs worth of gearshifts the brass bushings are worn and the rod had enough slop that the seal
couldn't keep up.
Got the nose cone in at the machinists getting new bushings at the moment, there is no way you would get the inner bushing out without removing the
whole nose cone off the trans and taking out the hockey stick which is a full gearbox out job.
The inner bushing on mine is more worn than the outer one.

I bought mine from CIP1 and the bushing came with the seal installed. its still in My original gearbox..
I don't think the extra inner bush was there.
My car only had about 68,000 miles when I bought it..
Have no idea how many klms were on the car the current gearbox came from..
Problem could be the synthetic oil in the gearbox?
it leaked out of every thread etc...
I had to clean where the threads came thru and silastic them all ... it stopped them seeping there but I had noticed My earth strap was greasy on the
front of the gearbox..
I'll have to check the level of oil in My gearbox..
I still have the inspection plate off, I'll have to check what movement is there..
