Exhaust systems - what's out there these days?
Having a little look over my 73 bay I have spotted a hole in one of the pipes. The system on there is of unknown origin but looks like extractors (4
pipes into one, fitted up to a small hotdog type muffler and still retaining the heat exchangers and manifold heating). The hole is rusted through
right near where the pipe attaches to the heat exchanger. Motor is a standard 1600 type 1 motor.
So what is good to replace it with? Back when I used to be into type 3 and bugs, one of the common ones was the monza style system with 4 tailpipes,
that and the stock is about all I can recall but there are obviously others out there. My question is, what's on your Kombi, how easy was it to fit
and how does it effect runnung and sound of the car particularly at speed? What are the options out there for a 1600 Kombi apart from standard stock
gear (as far as I recall they run better with extractor type systems).
Additionally, are the outer "shells" of the heat exchangers supposed to be loose? Been a while since I fiddled with these and I'm yet to find a
manual for the bus.

I should ad as a side note that when I ordered mine I needed it slightly different to clear an external filter pump. He was happy to make it to suit,
just needed an extra couple of weeks. Fit perfectly.

Yep, VintageSpeed is freaking awesome.
I love mine. It sounds great on a 1600tp with a set of 40 Kadrons, so I can't wait till it is on something with a bit more in the cubic capacity
department.

Again i am for the vintage speed. They sound great especially at 180 plus kph down the main straight of lakeside raceway.

VS on an upright sounds nice and tucks up for the lowered....me personally i do also like the sound of a non stainless system as well.

Are these alright on a standard motor with no fancy tuning or aftermarket carby? Mine is a stock 1600 - and the systems seem quite pricey so what are
the advantages over a regular system, apart from the obvious lack of rust?

One of the big advantages of VS is the variety of systems to exactly suit your needs. A standard engine works well with the heaterbox/J-pipe version
Sport Muffler as opposed to the Super-flow version that is available with a variety of diameters of primary pipes for use on a wide range of engine
sizes and levels of performance.

VS again
....This time I went with the VS system that was to fit with the moustache bar without mods, but I still had to do a bit of shaving on the moustache
bar to be able to fit the J pipe bolts for the exhaust flanges. Thats the parts in red that I had to shave down. Not a big deal but still not a
straight forward install.
Will see how this one performs ...........
sorry I didn't buy through you Matt, it was the last one one the shelf of that style while I was on the phone with Boris and thought I better get it
before it goes...

I bought a CSP python for my beetle.. I'm pretty sure they make 'em for buses too. Only heard the sound on you tube clips so far but sounds nice and
looks awesome! It's pricey though.
