Late motors in early engine bays?

I've heard some comments about this mags and on forums over the years. Something about 50s engine bays being narrower than later bays. Wondering if someone can give me the specifics on this.

When do motors start getting to wide to fit Oval window engine bays? 40hp, 1300 or 1600?

Pete , they are only tight near the number 2 cylinder rocker cover top corner and thats with a 1600 type motor .
You will only start running into trouble when you go to strokers with a widened motor and even then its only a minor cut for that same rocker cover corner

I have 2276 in a karmann ghia with 36HP engine bay , i have to put the engine tin on the motor just before i push it onto the gear box, but other than that it fits very well.
