I don't know but am willing to have a guess. It has the lug to take the type 3 hubcap so my guess would be the sport version of the type 3, the type 34.

No Clips then I think NOT VW or early Holden or chev etc..

New Holland machinery [Hay Rakes 55-56- Super 56] had wheels like that usually painted red or yellow..
[made in USA from about late 50s early 60s??>> on]

they just bolted to a flat hub...

I don't think the hole spacing was the same as VW??
unless a coincidence??

Lee

1969 type 3 hubcaps [around 1969 model] were the same as German 1967 beetle hubcaps .. [one year only model]

they looked like later hubcaps but had clips
they usually had full wheel trims held on by the hubcaps on the type 3s..

Yep, early type 3 by the looks of the hub cap lugs. Slotted and offset details I'm not sure about, but to confirm VW, it should have the logo and date stamps.

OK
after studying the photo again closely...

No they aren't the new holland wheels.. too much shape to the wheels they were just flat...

and it looks like small pins sticking up..

so, maybe early chev or ford etc which did have very large hubcaps

very old... early holdens used clips I think..?

Hi Matt

I don't think early type 3's had slotted wheels??

and I do think they had wheels the same as beetles with clips but slightly wider rims..?

Beetle (around 1967) not Australiia.

I read it on samba, so it must be correct.

its NOT a beetle wheel, they had 5 spring clips riveted between the wheel nut holes, these sprig clips held the hub cap on.

i think its an early Ford prefect / popular or Anglia rim, those 3 lugs pointing in to the center of the rim, deff not VW.

Jon, I'm not an expert on this, but I think that there was a changover model that was 5 stud and used late model hub caps.

You're thinking of Aussie wheels.

The Euro/US ones like these dont have clips, they use late beetle hubcaps with a different lip to hold them on.

I'm also thinking maybe NOT VW

I'm sure they would have MORE than three locating nipples..

and they are always stamped VW on VW wheels..

Yes.. maybe Ford Anglia and Prefect wheel..

the in between hubcaps used on type 3s here about 1969
and USA German made beetles..

looked like late hubcaps but the rim of the hub caps went under like the early hubcaps..

Just looked at a VW type 3 hubcap on website

they are domed in the centre

the VW centre is actually raised up.. not flat like late ones...

I keep noticing them at My Sons place...

but NOT domed like early ones. so in between..

Euro bugs in "1966 only" came with wide 5 and flat caps, i think these were type three wheels with a different off-set to clear the rear axle nut. the '66 bug also came with the pointy engine lid with the point flattened off.

the red bug pictured above look like porsche rims, long flat oval and no hub caps (hence no clips)

the rim in question has 3 lugs pressed from the hub of the wheel, VW didn't do this they pressed the whole of the hub. again see early type3 wheels with flat cap.
the other common wide 5 was the early ford pop's and anglias, and these rims are often used by rat-rodders for a "different" look.

Get the whole rim blasted and show us a makers mark!!

Is that so?

How many 66-67 Beetle rims like this do you wanna see before you believe me? ;)

There are 1000s of 66 and 67 Beetles out there with these types of rims.
We just didnt get them in Aus so not many people knwo about them.

Btw, most Prefect and anglia wheels are 16" and have a totatlly different slot pattern, as do 356 Porsche rims.

Is there anything You don't know about VWs Joel... lol

and those wheels are rare in Australia

Never ever seen one.. but have seen the caps..

are the 69 type 3 hub caps same as the ones that fit these 67 beetle wheels?

Type 3s went 4 stud in 68, same as bug rims but just wider and different offset.

The earlier ones had the flat hubcaps like these rims take, dont know that we ever got the slotted wheels here though, pretty sure early type 3s had solid wheels, but I'm not good with early type 3 stuff and most had beauty rings so you couldnt tell.

Yes, all the 69 approx fastbacks etc all had those stainless steel beauty rings so I'm guessing they may have still had the older type wheels??

but didn't some of those beauty rings have slots in them to match the slotted wheels??? type 3's maybe overseas??

I don't know much about them either apart from having a 71 variant for many years in the 70's

cheers

And the hub cap is like an intermediate version, yet I had a US car come through with early caps fitted to these, not right but they fitted. Definately VW, just I had forgotten type 1 '66-67 US/Euro used them, I agree the slots make it type 1. Aussie made wheels of that era will have kangaroo logos I'd expect.

I just took a totally wild guess and made that statement for shits and giggles......

Yes I know it for sure.

You left out the important next line of my quote where I mentioned that it was on overseas markets though I see.
Spend enough time helping out the overseas vw community and you start finding out just how different the same cars can be in different countries.
