all is well............
3000km up,loads of tappet checks & oil changes, 6800rpm limiter is in. bumped the drain nut out of the sump once and lost the 6L of oil, soon got
around to raising the suspension after that. handling well even up a bit higher, front to rear rake has to be spot on tho.
still tuned quite rich as this stage for safety
been chasing a "high end" cough/splutter/missfire...........
signal coil was stuffed. a new one helped a lot with cold starts and higher revs, still not right tho. it was barely reacting to any jet changes now
and i went through the entire range of my jets to no avail. playing with fuel pressure and fixing a accelerator pump "check ball" that had some
garbage sticking it open
i knew i needed new ball joints for the linkage to get sync perfect.............they arrived last week, after being out of stock for a
month.............better
time to lean it out and tune properly
air correctors........ after going to the 200 from the 190's, i noticed it staying off the main circuit for even longer, leaving a leaning out period
after the idles finished. jet changing did not affect the position of this leaning, but changed the mixtures accordingly (rich/lean) once the mains
DID come on properly..........dellorto describe the air correctors as an air brake, turns out from what i've found so far, they more effect the
"switching on" of the mains more than the mixture itself. SOOOOOO back down to the 180's i went, this took most of the lean hesitatation away
around the 3400-4000rpm, but it was still inconsistent with a big miss, surging and what sounded like flooding in the R/H carb up high in the
revs?????? (but never more than one symptom at a time)
timing was raised to 34' total, this changed the nature of the flat spots, but not completely removing them
floats...........the flooding was occuring worsa up hill or
aroung corners......so pulled the tops off today and found the r/h one was not quite closing the ball seat ALL the time due to the sideways movement
of the float on the hinges .........it also wasn't opening up a great deal, although the berg seats don't need much travel to flow anyhow, not sure
which part of the deal did it, but that got rid off the flooding and bogging effect, stoked about that!!!!!
still a slight missfire/hesitiation above 4700rpm........down one main size to 150's..........
50 accelerator pumps
36mm vents
70 idles (could go down to 65's now i think)
150 mains
180 air correctors
WHAAAA LAAAAAAAA!!!
FARK NOW IT IS MOTORING!!!!!
now it's banging off the 6800rpm limiter like no tomorrow, and i'm not the type to rev something past it's peak power just to say it does some
stoopid rpms............it absolutely loves it up there!!!
the grin on my face was HUGE as i flew along the back roads today.............mate at work wanted to know what i had been up to when i walked through
the door, smiling a lil too much i think......even after having driven the car for a couple of months with the new motor
it's now finally what i was after.......enough to make you think about what's ahead on the road and reaslize it's going very fast, very quickly.
too fast to be giving it a poke around town........i realize now it wasn't doing the goods for what was put into the build, until todays sorting
it is still very, VERY LOUD!!!getting close to 300km out of 30L of
fuel, but that's real country driving, up hill, down dale, round bends & WIDE OPEN (roads that is ), none of this freeway cruising stuff
NOW it's time for a trip to the dyno and some high def vids

Sounds great!
I once watch this doco about old american cars and there interiors etc and the safety of them. These are the cars that the owners wish they were
rocket ships.
In a front on crash they were finding that all the bling on the dash was cause massive head injuries but what was more disturbing was that in one
model car the glovebox lid would come down and decapitate passengers. Just a thought

sounds very very smooth, not VWish at all. more like...like...I know! a subaru. still that's a real complement coz VWs are not known for wanting to rev like that.
but seriously, that is a wicked bit of kit. I think you'll find when you fit your EFI that poking around town will be a whole lot more comfy. That's
really the main difference between big ol carbs and efi, smooth delivery from idle to redline and no dramas with flat spots easier to tune out.

Mate all hot Volksies sound that good. You just got to build em right. Sorry to say but I reckon the subi's sound rough due to their different firing
order I presume. I say GO THE VOLKSIES !!!!!
And as for carbs being not as smooth...... who tunes your engines?

Hey Daimo,
Just wanted to say that I love this thread!! Can't wait to see more videos! How did you take them?
Your work has been an inspiration for my home engine rebuild - even if it is the 3rd time I've had to rebuild mine!
Might have to hit you up for some ideas if that's ok.
Cheers, T

subies have the same firing orders as dubs. subaru pays VW royalties for building on their boxer design. If you'd heard my subie at 6k you'd know
why that I mean by my comments re the sound. No one tunes my subie coz it doesn't need tuning, it tunes itself.
Carbs are good, but EFI is better.
Am I jealous of Dumone anyway? YOU BET YA!

Hey boy's I didn't say they were slow, just sound rough. Certainly agree they need boost for any decent speed. I'm currently working on one with
500+hp and it is cheaper than vw hp, but equivilent vw would eat a subie, they just dont seem to react as well , must be all the extra weight, among
other things. At least thy're flat, for low cg.
Pete I have efi cars as well, even air cooled ones, but I feel carbs do have advantages.
