Prepping for Portland 2009

We didn't make it to Portland last year after a mad week of getting the car ready, but after looking at the axles it's probably better that we didn't make it.

Prepping for Portland 2009

I am now improving the rear end with shorter stronger axles.
Getting the rear end ready for more power to go straighter.
The original CAR and rear end work was never meant to go so fast and never meant to get a roll cage in it. I am now going to do it properly and tie in the cage as part of the rear end. So instead of starting another car I cut a lot of the work out to start again.
I am also going to change the engine combo so it should be good with a bit more juice!

Hope you get it done for Portland, would be great to see this beast run.
Keep the pics coming, interested to see how you tie the rear into the cage, been thinking which way to do this myself.

Gearbox mount

Mark [A 1200 is slow] just made my new gearbox mount.

It still needs to be folded at the edges for that box strength.
Bolts up to the bottom horns and to the new 4130 top horns boxing that section up like I had done last time, but it's tied to the cage this time.

Thanks Mark it fits perfectly and is awesome quality.

"4130 top horns"!!! Nothing like over kill!!!!

But an interesting idea Nick... I have seen trans plate hangers before obviously, but this take on the concept looks to be going a bit further.... Does the bellhousing void locate on the transaxle casing too? Have you added some lift too?

if nothing else, Warwick and Portland are invaluable just for inspiring all you guys to build fast volksies.
Then all you guys inspire the rest of us. Also special kudos to the guys who share the info.

Keep up the good work everyone.

tube work done

Hi Guys,

Here are the pics of the rear end so far.
All tied together with the cage now.
It is pretty much the same as before but raised and tubed with a few more bars running to the torsion housing.

Now I have to stitch in all the original firewall and wheel tubs around the bars, should be fun.

Looks good Nick , super street front pan and pro stock design bar work with torsion bars at rear . How narrow is torsion housing ? I'd triangular the shock posts to, back to main bar work as well . What size tyre are you going to run ? Hope you guys make it to Portland .
I , myself and Rod are staying home this year from Porland .

thanks guys,

It would be nice to have a bit more time to finish it properly but this is the junka[just has to work not look good] and Portland is soooon.
Plus I can't let Craig down again, he scares me..........

I wanted to do a Heathcote test and tune before Portland but it seems that time is running out.

Pete, sad to hear that you and your crew will not be attending this year. Your car is a main part of the VW scene in Aus and Rod's is one of everyone's fav's I think.
And what will everyone do without Lisa's videos??

Surely you can cruise on down for a quick pass or two.

3'' narrowed axles and still a 26x8 MT
