Is it for the street or race track, long or short course......?
Turbo yeah...but how much boost/power are you chasing?
That said, if street car or even some street, I'd go CB or Scat AL., Scat 3 pce if race only and unlimited budget.

we just used a CB aluminum high-top case for Bens supercharged 2442 type-1 engine and we were very impressed with the quality of the case .
They also come clearanced for stroker and machined for big-bore kit . The one that we chose also had a 9mm extra thick deck which is more suitable for
some stoker engines .
The only machining required was for the seal for the flanged crank that we used in Bens engine and you can buy suitable main bearings to fit a type-4
centre main crank into the case without machining.

I'm in New Zealand, not really may people in this country building engines like this. have most of the parts for it bar the case and a few small
bits. My mate DRGouk race engines will be putting it together for me.my last engine was a 2276 IDA engine so this is a big leap!

The Alumnium cases are made by Auto linea, and you will find they are "rebadged" for CB, empi etc.....they certainly are a great foundation for a
street motor.

'will find they are "rebadged" for CB, empi etc.....'
They actually start life for the required manufacturer before they are poured into the mould. Autolinea is the foundry and the case is often branded
with the name cast into the case at the sump, with there being variations between brands with alloy finish, style of machining, both in the basic
shape and quality of the important bearing journals, even clearancing differs brand to brand.
Scat and CB are the best IMO after working with most different brands at one time or another, they seem better finished and have the raised deck
available in +5,7 and 9mm iirc.

Yeah what I meant by 'rebadge' is they all come from the same factory !!!
You will find that each batch seems to evolve, so whoever sells the most cases from a retail point of view tends to have the 'fresher
stock'.............I have 3 motors built with these cases and they are ALL different in some way.......the good news is as they make more the quality
seems to become better

Century seems to be ok quality in some products, I know there is some of thier stuff I have sent back to the supplier as poor quality.
I'm not convinced P/B kits are better than Mahle though.
Are you sure the stock kits are longer than other manufacturers? I have some to check if I get to it.
As for the origins of thier products, maybe someone else knows.

So what would be the best make of cylinders for turbo application?
I am looking at 92 thick walled 94 register. I think length is not an issue as I will be using CB al case and my stroke will be 82.

Fast 68, I am building a very similar motor to you and when researching a brand new case I looked at everything and spoke to a lot people. I was in
good contact with Muffler Mike who tested out lots of cases. I went back to the tried and tested Mag case after looking at all the facts. I dont know
about now but the first alloy cases became riddled with spider web cracks after abuse of a season of racing. MM tested multiple alloys cases and they
all turned up the same. They might be different now, who knows.
My 2 Cents.

BTW my specs are
CB 78 Crank
Street Elims 44x37.5
Pauter 1.25 rockers
Mahle 94's p&B
Scat h beams
Garrett 2871R
Custom water to air intercoolers
Custom exhaust manifold
Haltech E6X
Keep us up to date with the build. Very Interested.

Its very likely that those crack were caused by the crank pounding the crap out of the case.
Balance is key. Where about were the cracks?

All over. They were like a web. They showed up with scanning of the case after a season of racing. Knowing MM engine building skills I am not sure it
would of been that. Maybe but not convinced. Like I said. These were early days in the alloy cases and may have been addressed.

Actually I have heard this before with the first batches of the Al cases.
Cracks all over would be defective manufacturing. Cracks around No 3 cylinder are caused by imbalance or out of center balanced cranks.(pounding the
case)
Cracks or line bore damage near No 3 and 4 bearings normally caused by harmonic vibrations which is characteristic of using light weight pulleys.

WBX or the TF1 are two options you might want to look at as well.
The company that makes the TF1 was just about to do a production run about a year ago so they might be available now.

I am a big fan of the CB case, quality is very good and it is what I have in my turbo engine. I tore it down to change the cam for a new combo and
the bearing surfaces looked like brand new, I was very impressed.

Thanks Mike, I have a few builds where I have gone this way, it's just too early to tell, so a little reassurance is always nice.
