Yeah I had actually thought about that but I will only be stripping the front end, shifter etc and leaving g'box etc in place as for some reason the chassis black stuck very well from the torsion bars back (including shock mounts etc etc).

This may change in time so who knows! I appreciate the comment/suggestion though, there are often things that you may overlook and it is useful to have another perspective on things so cheers for that!

Finished welding the seam next to the rear window (as only a centre section headliner will be fitted). After weld was ground down only a little filler was required to tidy it up. This is after etch primer.

Action shot....trying to keep the isocynates at bay as much as possible. I would have hired/invested in a fresh air respirator if I was doing more than one car.

Managed to get the interior and underside shot in high build primer (beige) after bare metal areas were spot etch primed.

Unfortunately just as I was about to shoot the exterior I tripped the fuse in the house fuse box so had to stop, clean up and fix the fuse (didn't have any fuse wire handy!).

So that ended progress for the day.

No major changes today so won't bother putting up heaps of pics. The remainder of the high build primer went on the body. Also started the guide coat/block sanding process on the peripheral parts - takes a long long time and as usual I never seem to get as much finished as I expected!

Had to play golf this arvo so had to stop early! More tomorrow...that is unless the surf is good....we'll see.

Yes indeed the weather has been perfect - gotta love Queensland!!

For anyone who gets the $hits when a body shop gives you an astronomical quote for a full bare metal body resto....take a moment to think how much time these things really take. This Xmas-New year break there has been at least three 10 hour days of sanding sanding and more sanding, not to mention numerous countless other hours here and there. And that is just for the final high build primer stage....not including any prior body work, or actual paint application (which I am still trying to get to!).

Finally finished sanding, then spent all day masking up (well 3/4 of a day after recovering from the new years hangover). :puke

Gotta thank my wife (and even my mum) who both lent a hand to speed up the process....this takes f'ken ages too!

Tomorrow I will finally see some colour going on (although I've been thinking that for the last three days!). Underside of guards, inside of bonnet, decklid, doors etc etc are all masked up ready to go!

So hopefully.....hopefully!! I will be able to show some colour tomorrow (fingers crossed as I am running out of days before work reality (work) recommences.

Well another all-day effort - 8am till 9pm with half hour lunch (I hope the neighbours were not too upset I was still spraying the clear at 8.30pm!!). Fortunately most of the neighbours are away which worked out perfectly!

Anyway, finally got some colour on - it is a green, with a goldy-bronze metallic plus a bluey pearl...very hard to describe and is different depending on how the light hits it. Just wanted something a little different.

This is after two coats of the base colour.

Of course that last pic was after clear (two coats)....being a garage there was no chance to keep all dust specs out of the paint.

Now this pic is my fave I think....damn sexy :P

If you're wondering why it took so long - first of all go outside and wipe down every square centimetre of your volkswagen with wax and grease remover - takes a lot longer than I thought!

Then of course I bumped into the fresh base coat.... twice so had to wait for it to flash, then sand, then recoat....you get the idea.

To top it off, I spilt around a litre total of basecoat when preparing to mix....twice....not good when it is $100/L....lots of friendly language coming from the garage at that point! :cussing

Managed to get all the masking off without drama - no big paint flaking...and minimal overspray (not that it matters much but just saves time sanding where required).
