Underside turned out pretty clean....its a little hard to see what you're spraying when on your back under here - the more lighting the better! (wish
I had more)

Very cool mate. So the colour we are seeing now, it that the final colour or does it change with pearl clear coat or anything? I mean is there more to
go as far as effects with that paint, as the paint sounds complex!
Don't get me wrong Alan, I love it, but I am wondering whether this is the colour I should be trying to picture the car in?
I recall that gaurd you painted a few moons ago was a little like this, but a lot greener from memory?
THE LOWEST WITH THE MOSTEST BLING BLING WINS!!

lovin it!!!
As a fellow DIY'er/Panel Beater this is awesome work!
You've inspired me to get cracking and stop being a lazy arse regards my 58!
Did you make the trolley the shell is sat on? Gotta get me one of them babies.
Now are you going to get the 3" micro buff and polish all that interior??
Ca't wait to see the finished masterpiece.

Yep this is the final colour Jim...no more tricks to come. It sounds more complex than it is probably - just hard to describe!
Colour is a very difficult decision let me tell ya! I went through so many test pots trying to decide...I'm still happy with my choice fortunately.
Whether it is sun or shade makes a difference....but this will be the colour the car will end up!
Cheers mate, by the way the notch is looking awesome.
Alan
PS Skinnyboy - this is my first full respray (have only sprayed acrylic on the lower half of my old bug)....self taught (some courses would have
helped though!) - just lots of reading on the net, books and also practice on old guards etc came in handy....anyone can do it, just gotta have
patience. Make sure you detail your resto on here too!
Yeah I made the body trolley - not difficult as long as you can use an angle grinder and a mig welder!
I will be hitting the paint with some 1500-2000 wet and dry and then buffing it with cutting, then polishing compound...followed by swirl remover and
wax...so the work is not quite done yet

how long has it taken you to get to this point?
I'm kinda lucky cos i do it for a job but im always time-starved. I've got a Honda Prelude just begging me to respray it but time always rogers me
hard!!
I'm building a new workshop at home in the next few months so I'll probably start the main resto then, ahh nothing like a winter resto!
I'm impressed at your handiwork, same as you I'm self taught, and patience is the only skill you need to excel at! That and "Mrs Handling and
Present Buying" :kiss
Cant wait for the next installment!!

Cheers fellas, it all started June 2003 so around a year and a half to date. Here is where it started:

Would have been quicker if we weren't involved in renovations, getting married, honeymooning etc etc... but thats life. Hopefully not too much longer
now!

Sorry all, no chance unfortunately :puke
Here is my "to do" list before having it running:
- finish paint hopefully this weekend
- wait for it to cure then colour sand
- repaint pan (due to chassis coat flaking off as it didn't stick to the etch primer as it was supposed to do)
- trial fit narrowed beam and front suspension to check fit, then weld on steering stops and steering box locators....then powdercoat
everything....again
- have new brake lines made and fit them
- fit new fuel line down tunnel
- repowdercoat new rollcage main hoop
- sound deaden body and pan
- refit body onto pan
- assemble doors
- fit rubbers and glass
- have carpet custom made and fitted, along with headliner
- rewire entire car (sounds easy in three little words eh?)
- run in new engine and gearbox
- test new brakes (and have them tested for engineer)
- sort out all the new car blues
- sort out wiper and demister
- order and have ragtop canvas fitted
Then there is:
- modify sub enclosure to accommodate the new speakers (which I still have to save for and buy)
- make new custom kick panels to accommodate new splits (which still have to buy too)
- run power and speaker cables and fit rest of ancillary stereo items
- make fibreglass amp enclosure under bonnet
- paint all of above
Of course then there is:
- engineer approval
- registration and insurance
I'd so love to have it ready for dubs by the pub but alas another year passes me by....it'll get there, if the anticipation is getting to some of
you, imagine how I feel after all this time and money!! Trust me I am doing everything in my power to get it finished ASAP!!
Hopefully will have some more pics on saturday night once paint is finished (if all goes to plan).
Cheers
Alan

a silly question here. are the holes in the rear 1/4 window frame for popouts? if so are they the normal ones, just asking as i could have sworn mine
(not fitted yet) have 6 mount holes..... also do you have any idea where to get new rivets to mount the latch to the frame.

Yep they are popout mounting holes - only five required for my popouts...not sure if the later ones are different? I drilled them specifically to
fit.
I got all my popout hardware (seals, hinges etc) from http://www.wolfsburgwest.com - not sure if they sell the rivets but would be worth a try, otherwise maybe http://www.kochs.com??

Apologies in advance for all the pics....its just that I am a little excited (and relieved)....PAINT IS FINALLY DONE!!
Here is the body after three base coats..
Mounted guards and doors back on to maintain consistency whilst spraying so the panels don't look mismatched.

I was very happy with the base coat...initially had heaps of trouble getting "tiger stripes" from a build up of pigment in the middle of the spray
passes.
Some fine tuning of gun distance, air pressure and fluid flow solved the problem.....eventually.

The base coat colour looks pretty ordinary when it is in its satin finish...the clear coat really brings it to life. You can see the colour but I will
keep it under wraps the exact make/model it is off.

Four coats of Spies/Hecker clear coat went on too (finished at 7.30pm....started the whole process at 8am). My right shoulder feels like I have been
repeatedly punched at the moment from holding the gun up for so long!

Indeed thats where it all began....amazing how you can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
That damaged front guard, necessitated a whole new front clip replacement (which I managed to do relatively successfully - can't tell too much after
paint when on unless you really look for it).
I can't wait to drive this damn thing!

Awesome colour man!
Does it have a "flip" in the paint, cos it looks like 2 or three colours in the different pics. Hows the arm shaping up Its a killer spraying a full car eh!! I cheat in work by hanging the hose up
behind me and from the booth ceiling, so the dead weight of the hose off the gun is removed!
Come on man I wanna see this beast finished!!!!
then i can start mine then!

Cheers skinnyboy, the paint certainly changes in different light/angles/reflections. It is predominantly dark green with a gold metallic that only
shows in certain light...then there is a sort of blue pearl that only shows again in a different light! Man it is hard to describe, I am just glad I
didn't fu*k it up too badly! :P
