In the depths of Melbourne winter I don my Austrian hiking boots which I was given in 1965 (still in pristine condition), so you have 42 years to go
before you can claim boot-longevity. In England, you can buy toothpaste from Boots, so this thread is still on track, like a good pair of boots.

Normally all this cheap toothpaste, dish washing detergent, cleaning products, chocolates, shampoo and soaps etc were only sold in the cheap shops
like Go Lo [now crazy clarks] etc and the Reject Shop ..
Its normally easy to tell as the instructions are in different languages...
and many of these shops have signs explaining about these parallel imports...
which are the same looking as You see on the shelves in Coles and Woolies..
but these now have many languages printed on them..
so, they are easy to see...
plus they are under half the price of woolies and coles etc.
Colgate is about $2 a tube.. lol
and where they used to be like that toothpaste that Rose bought, they now have many languages in LARGE print, so its easy to see..
I haven't tried toothpaste from overseas, but the dish washing liquid doesn't even foam up... lol
I have tried many of the items made in European countries
but tend to stay away from asian made stuff.. regardless of the brand name... lol
Sensodyne toothpaste is made in Australia , years ago it was imported from the UK..
I did buy some well known cleaning spray recently that was actually made in England.. and at half the price of woolies coles ... items that are made
in Australia.. ??
I do look at every item I buy to see where it is made...
Home brand band aids used to be made in the USA... lol
now made in thailand etc..
also check that the bottled water you buy is from Australia..
have seen bottled in thailand or indonesia etc.. on some.. lol
Rose may have to buy up a supply of colgate toothpaste from chemist shops... made in Australia... before it runs out..
I have noticed that virtually ALL fruit and vegetables at the local woolworths has Grown in Australia Signs..
it still has signs where nuts etc are grown..
plus anything else grown overseas..
Woolworths milk has finally had printed on it where it came from... NSW.. etc.. it was rumoured to come from Victoria.

Saw Colgate toothpaste at ALDI yesterday...
New Double pack.. [under $5] but NOT made in Australia..
it doesn't actually say on the tube where it is made.
ONLY on the packet THAILAND
I'm sure ALDI didn't know this before...
they like to have the best tasting products , if they can't make it they sell the original brands..
OK.. I'm on the look out now for Aussie Colgate.. lol
Parallel Imports --
Although looking like the original sold in Australia product these are NOT backed by the Australian Company who sell the Australian made product...
the imported product is NOT a parallel product once its NO longer made in Australia..

A good portion of their parts are made in European countries such as Poland, Holland, Spain, Hungry etc... Some from the US too, Canada etc.
This is mainly true for holden, Not entirely sure about Ford though
Still, both have Aussie made bits inducing the bodies for their flagship models.
Luckily I haven't seen any Chinese parts...............................Yet.

Dick Smith is taking master foods to court as they have their tomato sauce labelled in Large Letters
[size=6] Tomatoes grown in Australia [/size]
and the Australian flag on the label
on the back fine print says that ingredients are locally sourced or imported .. plus masterfoods is a US company...
Lee
PS: I would rather drink Polish made Coke than that from Vietnam Thailand etc..
but as parallel imports - they have no ties at all to Aussie made Coke... and can taste different..??

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't Dick Smith make all his money from selling cheap electrical goods/parts made overseas and didn't that cause all
the small electrical businesses to close down because they couldn't compete with his prices, exactly the same thing Harvey Norman is doing now??

and the little shops all went bust...
but His prices were LOW and He employed Australians...
which is a good thing... He didn't pack things over seas...
Now its all gone and the only place to buy Resistors and capacitors etc locally now [about 80 klms away] is Jaycar ..
Dick Smiths is now just another Harvey Norman....
and still owned by woolworths as far as I know...

also a BIG difference.. is..
Grown in ... Packed in... Packed by... Imported by...
so, packed by grocery wholesalers at Ultimo NSW warehouse
means they could have come from anywhere...
Biggest problem is - once the factory is closed and the machinery is sold... its only a building...
and takes a lot of money to get it running again....
knowing that the items can be bought cheaper from china or India etc.

Doing a clean up and had to throw my old work boots out, at least 10 years old and been through building sites, backpacking through Kakadu and the

Redback Boots are 100% Australian made and owned. The Cloros family who operate the business are 4th Generation boot makers. Family members work hands
on in the factory every day, to ensure the highest standard of production quality.
from their web site this morning.

At risk of being beaten over the head in here, I work for one of the big two.
I have worked there for 24 years. I work at a reasonably senior level and get to see a bit about the emerging market and how we are going to
respond.
The big two only started all this cheap overseas sourcing when Aldi announced they were entering the Australian Market. Aldi are bigger than both
Coles and Woolworths. Aldi's competition model of having no service, restricted range , manufactured anywhere and sold at very low prices was a
shock to the Aussie retailers.
They decided it was sink or swim. They decided to match Aldi so they didn't lose the bottom demographic in the grocery industry. Remember Bi-lo?
It was closed down when Aldi came over here as it was no longer viable for Coles to operate.
Costco has put further pressure on prices here. It also doesn't help when ACA or Today tonight have Coles and Woolies bashing segments every second
night but never Aldi. Aldi has an official policy of NOT speaking to the media.
The simple fact is that 80% of shoppers will buy a cheaper item if it is of similar quality no matter where it is made! The only way the Australian
food manufacturing industry can be saved is if people are willing to spend the extra 20c per can of Tomatoes to buy Australian grown, made, owned. I
always read the labels for where my food is from and always try and buy Australian made and preferably owned.
Coles and Woolworths are primarily Australian owned companies with major shareholdings by most of our Superannuation portfolios. You probably own
part of them from your super!
There is something seriously wrong with the world when Aldi can make food in Germany and ship it to sell cheaper than an Aussie alternative. The most
amazing thing I have seen is Ice cream made in SPAIN!! See if you can work out which one that is next time you shop. It's out there.
