Finished restoring the steering wheel - didn't want to over-restore it to look new, so kept some of the discolouration etc in the wood rim.

Thanks Jon and Cam.
Been busy this weekend playing around with the deckild and bonnet - the bodywork has begun!!
Will never be as perfect as a professional job but I always wanted to say to people at the shows when they ask "who painted it?"..."well I did".
Just another challenge!
first one is of the inside in etch primer after a rub down.

Very nice. Would it be better to get a new(newer/ newish) bonnet? Would hate to see the filler come back to bite you in a few years time, thats all..

After searching and searching for a good bonnet this was the best I could come up with! It had the least rust but after blasting (and some warping
from the overzealous operator) it ended up a bit wobbly. Although it looks pretty bad with all that filler, it is actually very thin and was more a
skim coat to tidy up the little wavy bits. It will be receiving high build primer and much more work so (touch wood) I don't expect to have any
problems coming back to haunt me down the track!

Finally got to bolting up the koni shocks tonight. Fronts are ready, rears just have to be tightened up and rear sway bar mounted to lower shock bolt.

Thanks Jim - they are very comfy too. A big wrap to Stuart at All Car Interiors at Enoggera in Brissy.
More bodywork last couple of weekends. Bonnet is slowly shaping up. Yellow colour is high build primer to show up a couple of suspect spots I found. A
few more hours to come on this sucker.

And the mudgaurds - both rears required a lot more work than expected. Bought them for more than I would have liked on the premise from the seller
that they were straight. Well after blasting it showed an area on each one that had previous accident damage. Also the lip on lower section was
cracked which required welding. Anyway, gotta expect these things on 40 year old panels.

I am lucky our front yard still looks like a bombsite mid renovations - I can spray all over the driveway and whats left of the retaining walls. Once
the new walls go in and driveway I'll have to be a lot more careful!

Hey Alan, did you have to put a 35mm spacer on the rear to clear the spring plate? How long are the bolts/studs your using for the rear wheels?
I have the same wheels ready to go on the front of my 61 Cabrio Beetle, but I've got 8.5'xET50 for the rear! I'm using 944 rear disks which
increase the rear track a bit, and its IRS so I'm hoping for a smaller spacer. Are you going to space out the front too?

Alan-good to see you are still at it.Mines gone on the back burner,while we are trying to get another house for an investment sorted out.Settlement is
on 23rd June-will need to rent it quickly so I can get some money back to finish off my Oval.Am thinking of changing wheels again-found some that are
made in 18's with a Ford stud pattern and the correct offset.Can have 17x7 on the front and 18x8 on the back with some real big rubber.

Steve, yep spacers are 35mm - I am unsure exactly of the length of the studs and since the wheels are bolted on unfortunately can't give you a quick
measurement....sorry bout that! Make sure you post some pics soon!
I was wondering how your oval was going! Those wheels will look awesome on the rear - big 18in - nice!

As per the VW Trends tech how-to article the rag section was cut with a 1/2 inch flange around from the inside edge of ragtop. (looks a little more
than 1/2 inch in the pic - hard to get right angle)

Made a simple T-brace out of framing timber used in combination with a bottle jack to hold ragtop up with enough pressure to keep it there but still
allow adjustment for positioning.

VW trends showed 3 1/2in from side door jamb support to ragtop seam at front corners - mine worked out at 3 3/8 each side centred.

Front corner of rag section to windscreen support was 3 inches (photo angle again deceiving) - just make sure both sides are the same.
