i found wqith the scoobi seats that when you take the original rails off, the 4 bolt holes can easily be matched to the base of a kombi seat, so i
have just bolted the base to the seat as if it were rails, am hoping that will be fine legally as it involves no real modification.

sorry to jump in too late, looks like you bought them already
mine are from a 968 (not as ex$y as a 911 pair) and they are wider but not too wide for my car.
pics in my members rides.
i got them for about $200, but they were FUBAR.
trimmer has worked miracles ($$) to get them looking like they do

I have used
Recaro SE seats which VWCOOL now has
Toyota levin seats, which VWCOOL now has.
Honda CRX seats.
Cobra Clubmans.
All these fitted well without any fowling on doors or handbrakes.
And as BEB pointed out, toyota crown seats. (Not recomended) though
Also a mate has a nice pair of celica seats from a GT4 which are electric and they fit nicely in his bug

ford laser TX5 seats for me, fit just nicely, pulled mine from a baja so had adaptors already, easy fit, comfy as, 400x better than stockers nicer
looking, much comfier more supportive and fit my largeish frame comfortably in them, dont hit handbrake or anything, touch the heater cable levers
when upright tho, not really an issue and are about 3cm from the door trim

Holden Gemini coupe seats are small and have a fold-forward lever for rear seat access.

These fit nicely too...
My donor bug has Toyota Corolla coupe (early 80's model?) seats extremely booty fabbed onto the VW sliders. The sliders/adapter is well made, but
appears only brazed together, and using washers for spacers is a no-no.
And because of that, not going into the wife's dub!
Nice seats, smaller than subi seats I've seen in bugs, crap colours though.
I can post pics (even disassemble shots) or measurements if anyone wants....
I'm going to check out Mitsubishi Lancer seats personally.

I used to own a s13 Silvia, was such a nice car and the seats were indeed awesome.
If my Bug's seats weren't in as good condition as they are, I'd put Silvia ones in for sure! Imagine leather ones..... mmmm..... :P

Here they are, like it or not!!
Pic of the seats after the shagpile covers were taken off and cleaned.
Measurements are :
Max width of the seat bottom = 510 mm
Max width of seat upper = 530mm
width at top of seat upper = 405mm
height of seat upper = 570mm
Total height from bottom of rails = 780mm
Next is the bottom with the rails.
The mount bolt spacing is 300mm front to back, 380mm wide.
The rails are 400mm outside edge to outside edge.
One side requires 5/8 " spacers between seat and rail.
The rail itself has a slope with the rear being 75mm from base to inner pipe, front being 55mm.
The "pipe" measures at 20mm diameter.
I tried to shrink the photos as small as possible.....
