I finally changed to PULP and found that fuel consumption went from about 10l / 100km to 8.0l / 100km. Would appear using PULP helps the 1380 to run a lot better. The figures quoted were on a trip from Canberra to Lismore and back just recently. I do not have the running on problem any more.

Isn't that usually on the rear or the carby (looking at the engine)? I don't seem to have one anyways- I only have an auto choke it seems.

UPDATE After a couple 90 min drives on the freeway on RON 95, I get no more run on, nor pinging. I do get a bit of a flat spot on acceleration, so I'll be tuning it back to 10 degrees BTDC and see how it goes..

GO PULP!!!

Amazing what a little Octane will do for your engine

Are these run-on problems only experienced in small, original size valved heads?

I have this problem and am getting a little worried that continually stalling the engine with the clutch and brake might be doing some harm in the long run.

I ran quite a few tanks of BP Ultimate through it and didn't seem to make any difference.

Other than using expensive fuels, I was contemplating:

1. fitting 40x35 valved heads

2. ditching the Kads for some small-ish IDFs

what about a good country drive to decoke.
like after an hr of steady cruisin in wth (5th if ya got)

then drive on say 90ks nahre 4 5 mins in 3rd without flooring it.

m
ercedes manual says this way u can clean spark plugs etc.

I changed my timing to run my Seat GLX on ulp due to budget (6 cars) and no pinging and its on 244.000 ks and i changed it 110,000 ago when i got it off my rich son (PULP only) they did not have PULP or 98 octane in the ole days. guess the lead had somethin to do wid it too.
then there are additives for the fuel (upper cyl lube) and TEFLON
woah there 40 horses....
need any oval stuff....found a shed full in Bundy Tofu ...incl mint? 54

Try BP Ultimate - I had constant pinging/etc (even with a knock-sensed HSV) with Optimax

I have heard several people complain about run on with Kads.

Baja Wes said he had it with his Kadd'ed 1916

Are you sure your timing / valves etc etc is all ok??

Dont you have a Pobjoy Astro??

What does Stan say??

Does it get hot??

I reckon you would be better with a set of IDF 40 or 44's.

IDF 36s would be too small

I don't have points so I set the timing at 28-30 @ 3500.

Valves have been done and there was no difference between before and after.

Yes it is a base Pobjoy, it has done it since new. Stan knows it does it. When I rocked up to his place after I got it back on the road it did it in front of him.
He puts it down to the Kads, which I got 2nd hand and supplied to him.

It's never got hotter than about 125 deg C and hasn't been hotter than 110 deg C since the rebuild. I do over 100km to work and over 100km return, so it does get a really good run.

I got IDF44's for the mean time (steroids planned) do you reckon they might be too big for the small-valved base version?? Maybe just a change in vents and jets??

Not too big - perfect

http://www.aircooled.net/new-bin/viewproductdetail.php?keyword2=FSK0020&carti...

AC.net - "run 44's in a 1900 - 2100s"

With 36 vents they will be right.

AC.net recommend 32 vents for 1600's (see above link) - and i agree (what ever that means :P)
I ran my IDF 36's with 32 vents on a 1600 and they were sweet as. On the 1776 they needed nursing. Just never seemed happy.
Reckon they needed 34 vents - but i couldnt be put in. Should have bought 40's or 44's
I know several 1916's with stock 040 heads motors that run 44's

Go for it
