very, very sad for his family. Still I spose with all the risks he took he would have known there was a possibility of this sort of thing happening. Makes you think hard about what's important is life. Personally I think I'd rather see my kids grow up. But no value judgments, he never pretended to be anyone but himself.:thumb

We'll miss you Steve. :(

always thought his character was a bit wankish, and i guess the majority of aussies had a go at him at one stage or another, but i guess we truly dont know what we've got until it's gone.

gonna miss ya steve. and i agree, dying is done best doing something you love. it would be more a tragedy if he were hit by a bus, than swimming with wildlife shooting footage to help protect the magical creatures of the ocean.

RIP.

What a tragedy. He was always good viewing on the TV. He lived hard and dangerously and has done a lot to demystify crocodiles and other animals.

His passion for the environment was legendary. We will all miss him.

He has put the word crikey back into daily use here in Oz and has spread it around the world.

Steve, I'll toast you when next I have a beer.

The best epitaph that I can think of, is probably your response when the stingray barb sank into your chest.

u gotta feel sorry for the family... Especially last night, TV all pouring all stories and reviews of him and everything, all competing against each other trying to outdo each other (each channel competing)...

would be hard trying to deal with the loss, and then have all those bOzOs with their cameras following u and tv, radio all swomped with the stories of a terrible loss... doesn't really help the family, especially Terry's children. They wouldn't be able to watch the tv for a month or so till it dies down. Rumour has it, the media was broadcasting stories about hte loss before Terry even found out :( How tragic is that...

The Daily Telegraph (sydney) has the front 6 pages devoted to Steve. Crikey, I think he's as popular as Di!

Now he can become a true legend. Millions of Americans now know where to find Australia on a map, something that no amount of Johnny's arse licking could ever have done.

the same media vultures that bagged him out, and borught him to tears, no wonder he stuck with Animal Planet and had a low profile on Australian media since. But they forget that in an effort to gain viewers, jeez they shit me.

The majority of the money he got off the film/tv went to buying wetland and habitat, kept very little for himself. Hard to believe that Steve and Terri made their first doco about 14 years ago ... how much did he achieve in such a short time....amazing guy....I wish I had that kind of energy...

I used to Steve Irwin was an idiot, but then one night when nothing better was on TV I watched his 'blooper' show where he got bitten by snakes, frogs, you name it. I was in hysterics at the things he came out with when he was attacked by animals, but I also thought he was awesome in his attitude and knowledge and scared of nothing... I ended up watching the whole Crocodile Hunter series! It was great for a laugh. :P

I thought it was a joke too when a customer at work told us all he was dead. Then I heard JJJ news and a reporter girl was crying over it. Talk about a freak accident... but if it's time to go, it's time to go.

So full on. He was a dude. I hope his family will be strong, although I doubt if anyone could come close to filling his shoes.

RIP Steve

I cringed when I first saw Steve Irwin on TV - I thought is this guy for real? It wasn't until many other viewings that the passion and love he had for both nature and his family came through. I think what hits home is just that he was a good bloke, believed in his principles, what you saw is what you got, and that he's left those poor babies behind. I doubt there'll be another like him for a long time, but I'm sure his legacy will inspire many kids. RIP.

Germaine Greer proves once again its not just a penis she is lacking

The animal world has taken revenge on self-deluded animal tormentor Steve Irwin, according to expatriate Australian academic and writer Germaine Greer.

Writing in the British press following Irwin's sudden death, Greer said she had "not much sympathy" for the naturalist if he was grappling with the stingray that killed him on the Great Barrier Reef.

"As a Melbourne boy, Irwin should have had a healthy respect for stingrays, which are actually commoner and bigger in southern waters than they are near Port Douglas," Greer said in The Guardian.

She described Irwin's behaviour as "bizarre", noting the famed incident when he held his baby son while feeding a crocodile during a show at his Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast.

"The whole spectacle was revolting," Greer said.

"The crocodile would rather have been anywhere else and the chicken had a grim life too, but that's entertainment at Australia Zoo."

She dismissed Irwin's explanation that he had the situation under control and could not have slipped or stumbled.

"That sort of self-delusion is what it takes to be a real Aussie larrikin," Greer said.

"What Irwin never seemed to understand was that animals need space.

"There was no habitat, no matter how fragile or finely balanced, that Irwin hesitated to barge into, trumpeting his wonder and amazement to the skies.

"There was not an animal he was not prepared to manhandle.

"Every creature he brandished at the camera was in distress.

"The animal world has finally taken its revenge on Irwin, but probably not before a whole generation of kids in shorts seven sizes too small has learned to shout in the ears of animals with hearing ten times more acute than theirs, determined to become millionaire animal-loving zoo-owners in their turn."

Well, I hope Steve rests in peace, but I really feel for Terry and their two children. Just imagine what their life is going to be like growing up knowing that their dad was this famous guy known all around the world, but they won't ever really truly know him or get the chance to know him (especially Bob coz he's so young). What a tragedy!!! My heart goes out towards them.

But wasn't it Germaine Greer that encouraged women in the 70's the burn their bras and hate men?????? Now thats bizarre behaviour !!!!!

I don't think that there is a person out there who would argue that Steve wasn't a bit crazy but he had a heart of gold and the love he had for his family, animals and the environment was clear. His death is a tragic loss and he will be greatly missed by his massess of fans!

I went out to Australia Zoo today.. It was sad but at the same time, really amazing to see how much support there is out there.. All the media is still parked out there with their big satelite dishes.. I shed a few tears and were alot of people having a good old cry.. here is a photo of the shrine that has been created for this great Australian!

Yes, I agree its going to be very hard for His family including the kids...

all those huge signs and posters with Steve's photo on them...

I can't imagine what it would be like to have a loved one's photo/image everywhere.... after their sudden death...

I was amazed, looking on one of Steve's websites that showed the dates He was on some of the TV talk shows in the USA....
It seems Steve was a household name in the USA before We had even heard of him...

and Yes, He will probably be missed More in the USA than down under....

But He was an Aussie... a true aussie...
