Reub's 1915 Upgrade
Reub sent his engine down for a step-up in Power.
Unfortunately some heavy handed Courier
gave it a "touch-up" on ts way here:

The Clutch and FW surfaces were a little burnt and distorted:
So I had some spare time today and tackled them first.
This is my tool post grinder.
I set it up with a cup wheel and went to town.

P.s. That looks like a cast flywheel......Not too sure I would be using that on a motor that you expect to get high revs out of

To be totally honest I AM NOT chasing a dyno figure here guys. Obviously I'm looking to step things up in the power department, and there would
probably be cheaper and easier ways to get the power... at the end of the day it will be interesting but I think the fun of driving it will far outway
being able to show people a dyno sheet....
|
I would agree with that. cars are to be driven, not looked at!
Loving it, it looks really awesome.

Progressing well.
Found the case hole where the pulley fits was a bit ugly.
So modified the case and pulley for a lip seal.

I removed this ugly thing,
And made up this, which is silver soldered on, for no leak suction
The oil pump actually had a loose shaft too.
You can see where the shaft had been spinning where it should be press fit.

The replacement 26mm pump needed to be machined on the back face to align the oil holes,
and the suction hole was match ported and radiused.
I also plugged the outlet.
The case was plugged as well, to prevent oil pressure leaking back in any way.
The pump was then matched and radiused to suit Reub's pump cover.

The case deck had some steps and unusual wear where the barrel sits.
This was because originally the case savers were only cut flush with the deck,
and once tensioned,
they sit a couple of thou proud...thus stopping the cylinder from sitting flat and causing leak and movement.
So I spot faced them down.
And then took a light cut off the deck.
You can see how worn it was in this pic.
Nice now.
Took about .005" off the surface.

The next step is to check the oil clearances.
The main bearings were mounted in the case, and the same for the con rods.
For Reub's engine I want to see no less than 2.5 thou on the main bearings,
and no less than .002" on the rod journals.
The cam is also checked and I like to have a minimum of 1.5 thou.
The cam is trialled in the case to check for the alignment of the oil pump tang and for cam gear clearace of the pump body.

Upgraded rod bolts.
Correct stretch is critical wh various different lubes requiring different torques.
Bearings mounted and clearance measured.

Chromoly FW to replace the cast one:
Fitted roll pins and re-ballanced the FW/Clutch assembly.
The Kennedy pressure plate needed 24 thou shims
because the diafragm would have been(was) over centre otherwise,
thus losing clamp pressure.(explains the burn marks originally).
New replacement sump,
drilled and tapped for Reubs M8 mushroom allen bolts.

Clearanced for studs and also the case nuts.
Must have been riding on these case nuts before.
And washed in the kitchen sink with hot soapy water.
