cheer's for the heartbreaking update.
i hate it when shops do that.yeh were ready, oops maybe were not.sorry just doesn't cut it.
i hope all goes well for tomorrow.
when i sent my car out the guy said don't worry i have heaps of jets and vent's etc.etc. then rang me the next day saying could i polease send as many jets as possible as he couldn't find his,and then asked were the timing should be set because he couldn't get it to stop pinging once warm.nice one tool.
it ended up being junk at the bottom of one of the main jets and a sucked in gasket.
hopefully no tools for you.

Well today it was parked in the same position all day. Drove past this morning and this arvo. Troy is paying them a visit and wanting a timeline of when things will be started and finished.

After all we had to wait just over 6 weeks to drop the car there so you'd think it would have been worked on by now.....

Mate wouldn't go anywhere else for that reason alone but it would be nice if they just showed a little bit of interest. Dropped the car off and didn't really want to listen to Troy when he was telling them stuff about the car etc.

We have been pretty patient over the last 6 and a bit weeks waiting for them......

Yeah Brennden i know what it`s like, but good things come to those who wait & those guys usually don`t look like they want to listen to anyone anyway,,, It`s a bit like talking to the patient before looking at the x-rays , if you get my drift? I`m "sort of" the same (in that regard) with my mini customers, it`s a matter of "yeah right, ok, whatever, oky doky, no worries, leave it with me", etc,,, & when i do finally get enough time to have a "GOOD LONG" look at it "Without any distractions", then i can make the right diagnosis & carry on with what "NEEDS" to be done first rather than tinkering & stuffing around with other crap that sucks up all the time

Not bagging anyone out, Those guys know what they`re doing (with Autronic) Just that they are a busy bunch of nutters "ALL THE TIME"

I`m not like them in many respects , but ,,,, i`m the same with time frames,,, i`m booked out for 3 months & yet it allways seems to blow out to 4 months, it`s just the way things go sometimes,,, a quick little tune up can turn into a head gasket problem which blows out to a cracked head & full engine re-build,,, etc etc etc,,, & then everyone is set back another week... you know what it`s like.

Car sat again today quietly waiting for someone to work on it. Troy went down there to talk to them about the car and show a few things regarding wiring etc etc and they seemed totally disinterested and reckoned it might be ready by christmas!!! Troy called this arvo and told them he was going to pick up the car tomorrow and take it home to do some more stuff on it.

A total change of heart from them and now want him to go there tomorrow to nut out what has to be done and how it will all go etc etc. they will start on it before the end of the week apparantly.

If only they had just shown some interest and we hadn't had to threaten them with going elsewhere to get something done would have been nice.

Don't get me wrong these guys are great tuners but a few of them with the typical anti VW attitude calling Troy's car a "shit box" were lucky he didn't give them a necessary trip to the dentist.

Tomorrow is another day and hopefully one of positive action.

Yeah, we all need a good wake up . now & then :-)

& yeah they did have a similar attitude towards minis a while ago, that was until Lionel & Bruce Ayres told them about my twin cam turbo injected motorbike cyl head conversion onto the mini donk :-) They quickly tucked their collective heads in :-)

hope all goes well Brennden

Well things will start on the car tomorrow YAY. But the downside is it mighten be ready for the Dyno day mid July:( We are keeping our fingers crossed though!!

Troy went there and chatted with the guys who will be doing the install and they got a bit of a shock when Troy opened the engine hatch and showed them what they have to do. He said the look on their face was almost of awe. There was something along the lines of "damm look at that". Then they started looking in detail at all the little things and were impressed with the effort and planning gone into the engine and fitment of accessories. Troy then lifted the bonnet and showed them the fuel system in the spare wheel well. They commmented "someone's spent a lot of money on this" then asked Troy who did it all of which he replied that he did most of it himself. They were very impressed he reckons.

Anyway they have a race meeting on soon that they have to get a few cars ready for so the Fasty won't see too much action just before the meeting is held due to racepreps etc etc. But hopefully it looks like she will be running for Valla. It's not a definate but we will remain positive that all stays on track.

Hi

I been reading this post for ages, very impressive.

I dealt with a few non VW shops in the past and you can see their eyes glaze over when you mention that your thinking of doing this & that to an old VW.

Usually when they see what you have done they get more interested. Sounds like this is the case.

There is a tuner in Sydney who has reputation for never talking on the phone or calling back, when Leigh Harris took his turbo bug to him and later I took my turbo WBX to him, he realised we were serious, we now get very good service.

Thats pretty much the story with all performance car tuning. Consider how many tyre kickers these tuners have to deal with. Kids with no real money, cars that are crap etc.

Then mention you want to modify a vw with a turbo and the average guy will just walk away. Most vw people are too broke to maintain their cars is how people see it, let alone afford to make it out accelerate some super cars.

One of the best tuners in cairns got out of the business completely because of all the crap that is talked behind his back, and having to deal with a bunch of people that are basicly wankers with no money. The last car he built and tuned I was fortunate to go for a ride in. 625rwhp on 32lb boost on BP98 on the street. Utterly insane, and its a shame he wont ever be tuning cars like that again.

Well I drove past this arvo and there she was jacked up in the rear with someone on a stool working away. ECU will be mounted on what is now the firewall(panel behind the back set in the Fastback) and the coil packs will be mounted on the LHS and RHS inner boot panels( 2 coils on either side). Hopefully Troy will get some pics or I might try and get some of the progress next week.

It is nice to drive past and see it is actually getting worked on though!! Troy has about 3 or 4 people who drive past regularly and ring him with reports of what is happening. So basically he knows everytime his car is getting touched/moved or just sitting patiently waiting to be bought to life!!

Boys at dyno have been really busy!!! Car has had a hell of a lot or wiring done and changed for ECU. thermo's for oil cooler and intercooler are now going to be controlled by ECU. Cylinder head temp sensors are being fitted and will control thermos switching on/off. What they have done so far looks really good with all the wiring being heat shrinked and very tidily placed. Troy has to go there tomorrow and remove intake manifolds and Porsche fan shroud for the Cylinder head sensors to be fitted as well as some minor wiring for the alternator too. Hopefully he'll remember to take the camera for some pics!!

Spent the whole day today putting the engine back together. I am stuffed from bending crouching and getting into positions someone half my size would find hard. Engine looks pretty much the norm till you start adding all the intake manifold, throttle body, fuel rails and injectors, handfulls of sensors and wiring and the abundance of room disappears!! Basically ready to be started apart from finishing off coil mounting brackets, air flow sensor, barcket for wiring plug from dizzy and the final touches on hall sensor in dizzy. After that ready to turn the key and see what happens!!! guys at dyno are really showing some respect for the car and the amount of work that has gone into it and what I did all day today!!

Dyno guys are heading to Sydney this weekend for some performance shootout at Oran Park from memory. Big HP cars trying to do the fastest lap sorting of deal. They are heading down with some customers and their cars so they haven't been able to do anything on the Type 3 last few days. next week they will get the timing side of things done and then it's start time. So fingers crossed by dyno day it will be running and be present. there will be videos of it on the dyno I will make sure of it!!

Just a thought but if the efi is being installed on an engine that has never been started before and the cam has not been broken in, you might want to pull the rockers, pushrods and spark plugs so they can check their triggering and setup the timing properly when they crank the engine to test the efi.

If they crank it a few times too many and your valve train is a little too hard core, you might end up with camshaft damage.

I raised some concerns with Troy and Brennden about oil pressure
and so they have circulated plenty through the system with the plugs out.

The cam and lifters are Troys previous ones from his normally aspirated combo so are run in.

Valve train is not killer,
but does use quality dual springs.

Either way I am hoping the tuners do not start cane'ing the engine unless the running oil pressure is acceptable.

The only 'unknown' is the aluminium case.

All the bearings were mounted,
before the crank and cam were ground on their journals to get exact oil clearance,
so provided the alum case has no porosity, all should be sweet.
