RACE REPORT
A big thanks to everyone that was there to support the event . It is always good the meet the people that you talk to and now to put a face to . The
night was a sucess for me and the car ran fast and is ready for the Portland weekend . I rolled the car out of the trailer as it was raced at Warwick
in October with the exception of a jet change in the carbs to compensate for the low altitude in Sydney compared to Warwick . The first run was a
10.24 @ 127.82 mph with a 1.43 60' and 6.40 @ 105.41 half track time . This was with the 2789cc engine and a 140 shot of nitrous oxide . The engine
had a misfire or some sort of electrical miss all the way down the track . I had increased the fuel pressure that was injected with the nitrous from 5
1/2 psi to 6 1/2 psi at Warwick to compensate for the higher than normal nitrous bottle pressure . Normally the bottle pressure is between 950 - 1000
psi , however due to the over filling of the bottle and the heat the bottle pressure was almost 1200 psi .
The next run I lowered the nitrous fuel pressure back down to the normal 5 1/2 psi and ran the car again . I ran 11.59 @ 116.54 mph without the
nitrous working . 1.76 60' , 7.46 @ 96.56 at half track . I inspected the electrical system in the pits and found it to be working fine , so I headed
back out for another run .
On the 3rd pass the car went 11.35 @ 125.47 mph with the nitrous working intermitently throughout the entire run . 1.74 60' , 7.44 @ 99.57 at half
track . In the pits I discovered the nitrous button on the steering wheel had lost a small screw and the wire was broken and not making a good contact
. This was fixed and I returned to the track .
The 4th pass was a good clean run with a time of 9.89 @ 134.67 mph , 1.44 60' , 6.31 @ 111.34 at half track . The car launched straight and as I let
the 2 step rev limiter off , the staging brake go , I activated the nitrous . The car picked up the wheels in 1st and 2nd gear and looking at the
video supplied by Rose , the 60' timers were triggered by the rear wheels . The car ran straight and clean the full length of the track . I still
have the turbo gearing in the car and did not see the 7400 shift light until I crossed the line . I am launching on the 7800 limiter and shifting @
9200 rpm's . I will now change the transmission with the new one with the correct ratio's before the Portland weekend . I am currently usind a 4.57
ratio with a .95 top gear . I will be changing to a 4.60 with a 1.19 top gear . I am looking forward to Portland and taking the next step to a 180 hp
shot of nitrous , ROD.

friend who runs nitrous cant reccomend them enough.....he had lots of issues without it due to inconsistent bottle pressure.........now he runs
absolutely CONSTANT pressure with the blanket.......much more consistent and safer tuning

might be a stupid question but is that alot of nos for that size motor dave? rod is running a 2789cc with 180 shot of nos, a few years back i was
running a 3.5ltr v6 alloytech commodore motor with a 150hp shot of nos (bigger capacity i know but, not by heaps and also mine was a stock production
engine vs a race built engine).... it seemed pretty mild at the time and i ended up doing 45000kms in that car, with the nos being used a few times a
week. i dont know, still learning the whole vw thing, but considering what rod has put into his motor surely 250 shot is still a pretty safe mix,
especially if he runs it on the richer side with fuel to be safe. again, just a question, as iv only been into aircooled vw's for about 4 yrs and
also plan to run nos on my bug...... better to be safe then sorry i think.

I dont know much about n2o other than what I have read and discussed with other users.,
...but knowing rod made over 500 on that same engine, boosted,
that should be easilly possible with n2o as well.
Plus being such a cool charge, it could be possible to do it even easier on the parts.
But my comment about the head studs was merely related to a suggested maintenence procedure
after a few (20plus!) runs with the n2o.
There must be some limit to how much will actually go into the manifold
without clouding back out the carbs,
but I guess this is why the pro-mod guys use it in stages,(well, one of the reasons, other than uncontrolable launches anyhow),
so that when you use the second hit, there is enough air speed to draw it all in.
Bring on the 300 jets I say.

What are the details of the Nitrous kit you have rodney?
Is it an 'off the shelf" NOS brand?
What about the fuel pump?
Is it an extra one for the nitrous or a totally independant system?
What is the regulator used?
How about some pictures.
Sounds like a very affordable way to go fast.

Dave , I have an off the shelf kit that I purchased in the US on one of my trips . This kit was designed for a vw engine and was a NOS brand . I think
this brand is now sold under the Edelbrock or Holley brand name . The kit was complete with 4 nozzles or Foggers as they are often refered to , the
kit had all plumbing, electrical parts and has extra jets to adjust the amount of HP or Nitrous to be injected . I have modified the fogger nozzles to
accept a similar type of jet I purchased from OZNOS here in Australia . I have a series of jets that I can use to adjust the amount of HP from , 25 -
35 - 45 - to 55 HP per cylinder . These jets are similar to what is in a carburator and due to their specific sizing allow a pre determined amount of
fuel and Nitrous to flow through them . I use 4 jets for the fuel and 4 jets for the Nitrous at any one time . The system can than be fine tuned by
regulating the fuel pressure usually anywhere between 4 - 7 psi and the Nitrous pressure can be altered by the means of heat . The pressure in the
Nitrous bottle usually is between 900 - 1000 psi . With the use of a thermal blanket or bottle warmer , you can alter the pressure in the bottle by
heating and expanding the gas . I have a bottle warmer and at the moment am not using it as I find it will only be of benefit during the colder months
of racing . I did however have an issue with too much bottle pressure @ Warwick this year and the bottle pressure was around 1250 - 1300 psi . This in
tern would have injected an excessive amount of gas and may have caused the system to lean out and hurt the engine . I was aware of the pressure
problem and as a quick fix I increased the Nitrous fuel pressure from 5 1/2 psi to 6 1/2 psi . The car ran great . I am using Sunoco supreme nos as a
fuel and from the fuel tank to the fuel pump the line is short and is large in diameter . I am using a Holley black fuel pump to feed the 58mm carbs
as well as the Nitrous system . I have a OZNOS or Moroso brand fuel log to distribute the fuel to each carb and this method is a basic recycle system
as the fuel returns to the tank , and the fuel log is adjustable and I have it set at about 3 3/4 psi to the carbs . Out of the fuel pump I have a Y
fitting and the other line is connected to a Holley pressure regulator that is set at 5 1/2 psi for the Nitrous . I have 2 fuel solinoids and 2
Nitrous solinoids which are mounted at the base of each inlet manifold and the lines that go from the solinoids to the nozzles are extremly short and
this is where the jets are located . A jet change consists of changing all 8 jets at the same time and will take about 10 minutes . In theory when you
do a jet change you should not have to change anything else in the system or in the carbs . I have learnt that the most critical thing with using the
Nitrous is to retart the total amount to timing from the engine . I have detuned the engine to use the Nitrous and at the moment have about 230 hp at
the engine and with the addition of 150 HP of Nitrous am pushing 380-400 HP . I will leave the 150 jets in for Portland and hopefully at the end of
the first day I would like to try the 180 HP jets . If all goes well and I have enough gas left i will go for the 220 shot , ROD.

hey Rod well done on the times and thank you for sharing your information, very helpful as always, is this the same 2789cc with the pauter cam, 11.93
down from 15.23 c/r. the NOS would certainly help with cooling the intake charge in the barrels now that you are using spacers to alter
compression.
I would love to see 220hp squirt in this monster, also is the autocraft set up same stud pattern as t4? if so I got some really thick Deutz 4"
cylinders I was gonna play with.
I wonder how the combustion pattern is in those heads and weather they would benefit from swirl grooves.

The Autocraft pattern head stud location that Rod uses, and as do my engines,
is almost identical to the VW Wasser Boxer stud pattern,
and the distance between adjacent cylinders is the same as stock type 1 and Wasser.
People have used the Deutz cylinders on type one aftermarket engines,(pauter, scat, autocraft, arpm and autolinea and converted wasser),
but pobably the largest size you would ever want to go would be 103mm or so.(case bored to about 107mm, head 110 to 111)
If you wanted to use a very long rod, and just sit the barrel on a very shallow step at the case you could fit as large as 105mm,
but that is just greedy on a type 1, he he.
