Bus box, What do I need?


Hi,
Looking for advice on what bits I should build a bus box from for my 2789cc pauter street/strip car.
091 6 rib case ?
002 bellhousing?
002 gear stack? Will this keep the trans shorter than a straight 091?
Lan D bus to bug adaptor, 091 or 002 version?
I was looking at one of the new albins 4.13 Ring and pinions, Will this work in either a 002 or 091 trans?
Sorry for all the questions, but Trans stuff is'nt my area of specialty.

You can use the 091 case and 02 bell to make it as short as possible.
The intermediate housing to suit 002 gears would b the least use of space and is around 8mm shorter than the 091 version.
...and uses the 002 gear stack.

The Albins 4.125 ring and pinion can be ordered with either 002 or 091 shaft,
but have yet to see one so cant comment.

The other opion is to use the 002 from 1800 bus with 4.857 and re-gear to suit.
The taller first gears required are generally stronger than those needed to match a 4.125.


Work out your final drive gear required and work backward to select the first three ratios.

Dave, Thanks for the solid info.
At this stage, Im only really only trying to figure out what case/intermediate housing I require, The reason being that Im working on the chassis now and want to get all the mounts done for the box.
Just to confirm that Ive got it right Dave, will the following work together?
091 Main Case
LanD 002 intermediate, Is this the housing you would reccomend or would a berg be better?
002 gearstack
Any ring & pinion, as long as its the 002 Version? would this include the 4.857?
I like the idea of the lower R/P and use of taller stronger gears.
When I get further down the track with the engine and see where its making its power Ill ask you what gear combo to use.

Yes that is all correct david.
the berg kit is a casting but very good quality and comes with a lot of the parts you will need.
The LanD housing is billet aluminium, but is no better exceptin appearance.

Thanks dave, So Is it the BUS600A or the BUS600L,that i would need? Loooking through your threads, I see the LanD housing uses a 113-311-375A pinion bearing, which bergs say is required for the BUS600L, So im a little confussed.
Is your LanD housing the 002 version?

howdy, i got irs 091 busbox in my bug wit landhousing [not running yet] for all the hastle/cost and makin it fit in a bug. if i had to do it again i go with autocraft housing with all the best type 1 parts internally. look forward to seeing this street bug when u have it finished. there is some real awesome street bugs on the forum being built, cant wait to see how they go.

Whats the reason for going with a 002 gear stack and not retaining the original guys?

My original berg housing was the BUS600L which uses the latr 002 style bearing.

When I got my LanD housing to reoplace it theyonly had the style that uses the 113 bearing,
and that was also the gear set that I lanned to use, so that was my choice.

Albins gears, that are "in stock" are 002 or 091,
so choosing that housing will enable gear sets to be purchased here in Australia
rather than having to order 113 style from the USA or custom order from Albins.

Because Groggy's trans uses the 091 version of the intermediate housing,
his takes up 8 more mm of space.
Also from memory your engie is very wide greg?...86 or 88 stroke with 5.7 rods?

What problems did you encounter Grogy?



The bus trans will move the engine to the right within the engine bay, by about 1/2" from memory.
Unless, you centre the engine and use different length axles on each side.

dangerous is on to it, cut body below back seat so trans can be moved forward,[intermediate housin sits into cut out area] adjustment has to be made to refit back seat. put plug in nose cone where reversing light sender is so it doesnt hit torsion housing. then trans is still further back and off centre as dangerous said ,so fittin in motor is a pain. rear valance has to be cut off, cause u cant get the motor in the regular way. then there is no room above trans or beside it to fit a[bugpack] cooler/thermo fan, especially with a kafer brace] my motor is 86/94 wit 5.7rods so side trims in engine bay have to be trimmed. so with astandard size trans its alot less work

plus u got to fabricate a diff mounting system, or spend around 500-600 to buy one, a little less than half the money to buy an autocraft case or a lot more than a rhino case

Thanks Dave. Would the hybrid 113/002 Mainshaft that I found that weddle and others sell in the US, It says it takes keyed or splined 3/4 gears, with an adaptor, Does this sound right? Im confussed with this gearbox stuff, But it is intresting to learn more about it.

Thanks grogy, I am prepared for a little bit of triming, Espically around the valve covers , The tight radius of the pauter intake manifolds should help inside the engine bay.

Hi Dave,
yes the "hybrid shaft" can use either 113 or 002 style gears,
and can be fitted to 002 style housings with a simple steel sleeve that they can supply, so that the smaller shaft of the hybrid/113 will use the larger 002 bearing.

The hybrid shaft does require a special hub though, but these are available from them too.

Incidently, those shafts are made by Albins here, for weddle.

Looks like a nice part and I guess the bonus is that you get all the other parts that you need.
I think I will go that way. Will stock 002 splined gears work with the albins 002 stuff? I was thinking of using a stock 4th.

Hi David, yes, stockk 002 gears will work with the Albins mainshaft sets.
In fact that is what I used myself with both the
blown engine combo,(although they struggled), 4.86 with both 0.89 and 0.82,
and also the N/A deal, but using the 5.43 diff and 0.89 fourth.

Dave, Since my car is going to be dual purpose, The gearing will be a comprimise, with a 4 speed. Once ive dyoned it, I will choose the gearing, it will be 3 gears for the 1/4 i guess.Im not looking to set any records with the car, Just want to build a nice strong combo, that can be good at the track and on the highway.
Just checking with berg on the availability of the 600L.
