there are two wires running to the semaphores. i don't have a wiring diagram (sp) handy but one goes to the armature, the other well is either an earth or goes to the bulbs.
if one goes to the bulb, you could hook each of these up, via a flasher (would prob need two flashers, one for each semaphore), to the blinker arm and hook the wire that accuates the armature to the correct side of the switch.
hope that this makes sense.

yeh, it mkes sense (I thinks). There ARE just two wires: the one going to the armature also feeds the bulb i think, so when the bulb blinks, the semaphore rises and drops too (theoretically, not physically in my case) So would I have to rewire the semaphore circuit to bypass the flasher unit?

Semaphores don't blink from memory, they pop out lite up

Indicators blink because they are just sitting there and I guess they decided to grab peoples attention more when they developed them

6 volt system

The original semaphores... called trafficators in the 50s & 60's in Australia-
were not made to blink... just light up...
There is an aftermarket Hella Amber blinker unit that takes the place of the trafficator unit and is made to blink...
They are much more safer than trafficators (semaphores in USA)
The main differences in a 12 volt system are:

12 volt Battery (EXIDE best IMHO)
12 volt Coil
12v Halogen Headlamp Bulbs x 2
12v Interior lamp Festoon bulb
12v number plate bulb
12v 21/5w stop tail bulbs x 2
12v bulbs for speedo x 5 or 6
12v bulbs for front Parking lamps x 2
12v Generator
12v Regulator

Fuses and Condensor & points are OK
Wiper Motor Ok with Resistors
Semaphores OK with Resistors
6v Starter Motor & solenoid & Horn OK
Resistors for the Wiper motor & semaphores.

12 volt blinker unit - if needed
12v 21w blinker bulbs x 4 - if needed

A friend told Me He bought the special resistors from Auto One... I have never seen them. they have to be heavy duty for the wiper motor...
thats all I can remember....
cheers & I hope this helps ..

68auto... You're a gun! that info is well swell! Thanks heaps! Now i have to just scrounge up the money....

You'd be running a pretty low CCA on the battery yeh? unless you've got a big head system install i suppose...

Another veedubber 'sleeper' said he paid about 500-600 buckazoids to get his conversion done... this sound right to you? And is that price what you'd pay someone else to do it? or just parts?

cost of 12 volt Conversion

I believe that the conversion can be done for approx $300 PLUS the 12v Generator. If You get a used working Generator Jenz , and shop around, You may be able to do the lot for $300.
IMHO the best Car battery is an EXIDE.
You can get MUCH cheaper baatteries but remember You only get what You pay for - especially in Car Batteries... To save money, buy a battery that fits holdens or Toyotos etc.
Not a Ford battery as their terminals stick up too far... Cover the battery with a piece of heavy rubber - because if You don't and some heavy person sits on Your back seat. The seat springs will short out the battery and You will have one VW on Fire.
Not a pretty sight.
When looking at the Batteries at Big W or wherever - turn the battery around so the terminals are closest to You.
The Left Hand Terminal should be ++++
POSITIVE and the RHS Negative - - - -
I hope You can understand this OK...
Jenz Send Me a U2U if You don't understand anything at all....
