Everyone says I change My oil TOO Soon...
VW do Mexico still recommended oil changes at 3000miles in 2002 ...

Great specs on those oils...
Just have to find a good price now ..

AUTO shops are just TOO expensive...
$42++ for Castrol Magnatec when BIG W is $34-95 today...??

I use penrite in my waser"v". Its the only one off the self that had enough ZDDP and P, not that roller cam needs as much as flat tappet but its still pushrod and I hammer that shit out of it. So I need more protection than the Hyundai style engines :lol:

Well GREAT NEWS...

I went to have My beetle passed for REGO today locally and was checking the spark plug leads when number 4 lead was off the plug and in My hand...??

seems the screw on cap on the spark plug had unscrewed itself and was inside the [Eagle] spark plug High Tension lead end...

so, When I lost power, the spark plug lead came off...
THEN oil squirted onto exhaust and SMOKE...

So, When I pulled OFF the highway...
the oil didn't pour out [hose didn't come right off] until I had stopped the car...

so, the little oil trail then BIG pool of oil ..

means MY Engine is still OK....

so, some good engine oil ... and fingers crossed....

Everything should be OK...

Sorry to hear about this episode Lee but great that it has ended well.. Could happen to any of us. I wonder whether those saying why bother with an external oil cooler run external oil filters? (that question might very well start a debate) Pobjoy doesn't recommend filters but Berg does. I don't have either but plan on running a filter on my 1776 when I get around to assembling it. Your experience however suggests to me that I should fit an oil pressure gauge that changes colour or beeps at me when the pressure drops rather than having to watch a needle all the time. Wouldn't matter what brand oil you use if it is on the road instead of in the sump.

Good news Lee. Hope she's all sweet again.

As for filters, you bet, filter added as a full flow system to all my engines. :), Also fit an oil thermostat if using a cooler, not just for the temp control, but for quicker oil delivery at every start up.

for NO OIL Pressure..

Also - when oil light goes ON.. Engine ignition goes OFF..

I don't know how lucky I was....:cool:

Funny about Pobjoy and NO FILTERS...??

ALL OTHER CARS HAVE ENGINE OIL FILTERS... !!

Filter and seal behind the Crankshaft pulley would be good...

got to help the engine last longer

Cutting the ignition on oil light is probably abit extreme.

THere may be the odd instance where the oil light might give a flicker and you don't want your engine cutting out in the middle of the road.

I can't see Lee doing any wild driving but I know with mine when I had VW engines if I took a corner real hard for long enough or did a bit of circle work/harmless drifting I could get the oil light to come on briefly.

Also as the engines get older and hot it's not unusual to see abit of oil light flicker at idle if the oils getting abit old, not that Lee will let that happen ;)
Even the owners manual tells you it's perfectly normal.


The gauges I have in my bug can be programmed to flash the face red and beep at specific oil pressure.
I keep the beep muted, the flashing red face is impossible to miss.

My current engine is so worn that the oil light comes on when I accelerate hard or go round a corner a bit quick if the oil level is down near the refill mark on the dipstick, so an ignition cutout would leave me stranded - not something I want to contemplate with today's traffic. Reckon a guage like Joel's sounds like the go. Also have a Pobjoy extended sump cup to go on the new 1776 if I ever get back to motorkhana's and handbrake turns
