Those windows definitely look like a pain in the arse to do, but definitely worth the effort!
I'll go ahead and order the seals and what not, we'll see what we can do.

Thanks for the write up though, really appreciative of it!

hmmmm......

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080112Medium.jpg

might do a bit more on that lid...

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080185Medium.jpg

best helper keen as always....

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080177Medium-1.jpg

brown paint came off the inside easy as.......

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080178Medium-1.jpg

.......thinking the brown hornet must not have been too bothered with prep work. interesting number

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080179Medium-1.jpg

no rustiness tho .....just treated a little bit around the hinges with converter....

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080183Medium.jpg

and down the bottom.....at least if i can't be bothered with proper paint, the next owner won't have to worry about rust coming from underneath......

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080184Medium.jpg

etch primer......

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080188Medium.jpg

in the meantime the 3 1/2 year old had taken to flying down the path on her 3 wheel push trike and throwing it sideways around the 90' bend with opposite lock dialed in (YES SERIOUSLY )........so enjoying the break,..... i got carried away on the strip disc.......

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080194Medium.jpg

.....but managed to pull myself away and start packing up........might have a look at that rear apron while the gear is out.......oh dear

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080195Medium.jpg

..........and considering i originally set out just to rough up the paint enough for a light coat of white..........got RATHER carried away on the bootlid again......

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080196Medium.jpg

gave it coat of converter too.....

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080198Medium.jpg

managed to put it away this time tho........

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080201Medium.jpg

and mow the lawns i had walked out to start on 6 hours earlier  .........still not sure wether to clear coat it at that, strip it bare and clear it cause it doesnt have a repair in it........or paint it "white"

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080199Medium.jpg

well a foam block and paper really by hand....as said i really only set out to rough up the brown for some fun painting. it wasn't until i really dug down with the paper till it was discovered the very lowest coats were cracking and i kinda well, sorta got into it with a worn out flapper disc on the grinder ........those things are cool for grinding away welds and umm, maybe bog if you're silly enough. what can i say, the sun was shinning and my bestest offsider likes being outside too. once i got the bog out i thought it worth treating so it wouldn't rust under whatever i threw on it/did too it.

Hopefully one day i will get back to it when doing a proper respray and all we will have to do is strip the paint and go from there.........what i'm trying to say is it's got no nickey in it now, nor is it going to get any this time round either, so it's far from straight, but it's been enough to get me interested again which really has been the goal of these boring updates

so again the sun was out and i was slowly removing the verylast of my finger prints.......mainly have this shot for reference on where to "ratify" when paint is done.
Man making new paint look old is a mission!

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080222Medium.jpg

now which colour matches best....

eeewwWW ceratinly not that one....

FAIL :grind:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080232Medium.jpg

something in that blend on the edge there.....

I'm curious,

to fit a W decklid to a 1973 L bug, I'd have to change the rear apron as well?
Not that I want too, just want to understand what is required to have it fit properly and so forth...

early start to go backwards again......:fakesniff:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080342Medium.jpg

got in there with pilot bit and cheapo angle head head drill for the most part.....took on a couple from the other side of the panel

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080344Medium.jpg

using proper spot weld drill bit this time around...

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080347Medium.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080349Medium.jpg

so yeah it can be done with the motor still in, thank god!:punk:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080356Medium.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080369Medium.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080372Medium.jpg

stinger needed cob webs blown out. how can you not :!:.....and actually haven't seen so much of the motor this complete ever really. it's either hidden away it's it's little home or with many parts removed on the couple of times it's been out of the car.

so it was kinda cool to take in the phatness

lots of work

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080364Medium.jpg

it's been sweet having the stoko around and laughing at how polar opposite the two cars are.......makes for some nice pics too

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080380Medium.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080384Medium.jpg

worlds apart....

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080388Medium.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080390Medium.jpg

oh that's right, was doing a job....easily distracted

getting the panel to fit without too much interference when removing/installing..

trimmed the inner edges straight up. although this bit could be left, i'm not too fussed to leave it there, more clearence the better

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080402Medium.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080403Medium.jpg

cut the excess seal channel back

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080400Medium.jpg

probably carried away too much on the inner section, but removed most of the inner mounting strip

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080404Medium.jpg

anyways, not a bad days work and can already see the amount of time/effort it will save in both fixing the panel that was taken off and future engine removal

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/Ratstoration/P1080399Medium.jpg

back going to waste in the shed again

Hellbugged!

Looking really damn good, can't wait to see this complete!

Looks like I'll be following in your footsteps and going the way of the removable rear apron.
I'm also really curious about how you paint your panels, you seem to be able to do them very quickly...

How is the removable apron remounted? Just really curious before I actually start the process of making mine removable...

Ah, easy then, I'll be making it my job next school holidays to rip it off and reattach it.
Just means that when I want to work on the engine, I can just slide it out instead of having to raise her up!
