By guts I assume interior (seats etc) - if so then nope not in for a while. No point until I finish the kick panels and sub box....and doors...and
sound deadening.
Patience my friends....if you're getting antsy waiting for it to be done, spare a thought for how I feel after working on it solidy for 18 months
(pretty much every weekend and most days after work). No-one wants it finished more than me, but no point rushing now. :duh

Just a quick pic....put the flat 4 mirror on today as well as a bit more door assembly and continued pan sound deadening with Fusion stuff (not as exy
as stinger or dynamat fortunately as the pan is a pretty big area).

Alan,
I'm interested in what you would call this look. I am by no way a purist of any VW style. I thought that due to the 17 inch wheels and the Type 4
engine = German Look. The bodywork and interior is Cal Look styling.
Perhaps you would consider coining a new term. This car is truely one of a kind.
I'm think everyone who religiously visits this thread (myself included) would like a synopsis on what brought you to this point. I'm sure it would
make good reading.
Regards
Brendan

It could still be termed a Cal looker, as Cals can run any style of Porsche rim.....17 inch....why not? But then Cals will usually run 135 or 145's
on the front as well. Maybe it's an "early German Looker" or a "Resto Custom"
.....luv it all the same.

I think perhaps a brief summary will suffice
When it all started I was quite content with my old beetle (#76 logos, BRMs etc)...just enjoying cruising in it. One day I drove up to the local post
office to post something (funny that) and an old lady sitting on the bus stop came up to me to comment on how nice the beetle was which was
cool....and she then said that they had one under their house for the last 10 years after their daughter had crashed it. Glimpses of excitement of a
split or an oval conjured up in my mind so I told her I'd love to check it out.
Turns out it was a 63 in pretty average shape (accident damage and rust) but it was one owner after all so hadn't been bodged up. She offerred it to
me for free as long as when I finished restoring it I'd take her and her husband around the block in it for old times sake which I agreed to.
So the resto began....I had always wanted to do a full body off resto and after finally finishing uni and having some money rolling in it was perfect
timing. Stripped, blasted, repaired, panel beated over many months. Original plans were for a cal-looker (hence started with Fuchs and swingaxle box
for straight line stuff). As time went by I was leaning more towards the german look (big wheels, type IV etc)....so out went the fuchs, in came the
turbo twists. Then began a phrase which I have caught myself saying many a times over the last 18 months - "I've spent this much time/money on it
already, may as well not cut corners now".
By no means do I necessarily consider myself a non-conformist, but I do like to stand out a little. So I just combined different aspects of different
"looks" into a package that I thought would work well. Stock upholstery (cal look) but minimal headliner (german look), roll cage (german look) but
big stereo (? look), type IV (german look) but painted and prettied engine tin (custom ?), 17in wheels (GL) but swing axle box (CL), custom colour
(GL) but stock side trim (resto custom).....too hard to analyse!!
Anyway, enough rambling, I just know through trial and error what looks good together (in my opinion) so just ran with it. Many factors have changed
throughout the project which ultimately cost more money but I won't be doing another resto to this extent for a while so I'm not too worried. As I
said, lucky I have an understanding wife :P

I would like to see the look int eh faces of the previous owner when you show up with the DasResto :thumb
PS. (hey, maybe that should be the name of the new look, not Resto Cal, not German Look, not Cal Look, but DasResto).

How about DasLook?
Well said Alan. There must be a male gene that is triggered by the length of time it takes to do a resto. T x $ = n x direction change

I got it from a car audio outlet where I bought my stereo stuff from - Northfield Car Audio:
http://www.northfieldmoorooka.com.au/
Almost any decent car audio place should have it though. Good stuff is not cheap so beware...probably cost me around $500 thus far (hopefully that
will be all I need!!!) Ouch yes.
Re. the look, I guess its not warranted coining it with a particular genre as you'd have to build one pretty much the same to class it under the same
banner. I'm just happy with DasResto....you'd almost have to call it DasHybrid or something similar to encapsulate the combination of
"looks"....but that sounds crap so I'll stop talking now. :duh

Started work on the kick panels finally today - started masking up the footwells and surrounding areas. You can also see the fuel level guage attached
to the steering column - tried to tuck it away....didn't want to make it look too ricey.

Spray adhesive was then applied over masking and alfoil attached (and taped at joints).

Plastic was to stop resin from getting everywhere. Foil is to avoid resin seeping through any cracks in masking and messing up the paint, sticking to
it, and potentially ripping it off. It provides a seal as such.

Here it is after two coats of chop mat and resin applied - this will form the basis of kick panels so they are sealed enclosures for better response.

Hopefully tomorrow I will cut and router the mounting circles for the dynaudio splits - they will be glued to the glass moulds seen here, then fabric
stretched over it to give the kicks their shape and complete the enclosure.
Surf is cranking again though so not sure how much will get done :P Have to have some way to stay sane through this ordeal!
