I agree with Benetton, it will become harder and harder to find bits. Even thou i grew up in the UK i cannot justify purchasing parts, eg:for my 63 notch, out of the UK that were found here.

Ya know as much as i hate to say this but... I have met this guy who runs Pukka dont underestimate him, he does find up to and above 30 kombies per visit, dunno how he does it but he finds em Its not just kombies but parts and rare, rare accessories.... i have seen it.
Sad but true

Dont the poms get cranky!

Sorry if my Xenophobe comment was over the top of the sarcastic scale, that wasn't one of my most tolerant days.

Good thing that Zoidberg guy doesnt post too often hes a bit of a dissapoinment, don't you think?

Nasty Nasty Nasty language
If hes not an exporter then he hardly need get so offended,
Forum eticut would suggest that you dont say anything on here that you wouldnt say to the potential audience in person,
If this bloke insulted me in person like he insults everyone else he'd want to have good medical insurance.

The bloke from New Zealand makes a good point and seeing the ridiculous prices of Kombies Overseas convinced me to buy mine and sit on it till I am ready to restore it as I do foresee them becoming more and more scarce.
It would be nice if we werent loosing them to overseas buyers but getting upset here on the forum wont achieve much as we are mainly enthusiasts and those who actually are Aussies, like the name of the forum suggests, dont like seeing our resourses evaporating but can do little more than express it on here.
Cheers Tony:cool:

lets stop being nasty to each other and just talk veedubs eh.
enough unhappy vibes lets all just say we don't agree and leave it at that.
so then mr.herbie dude what split you got? what do you intend to do to it when you get round to restoring it? hope it turns out cool :D

heh well i think i'd rather see it go OS and be restored rather than rust away here. The truth is that the UK pound is worth a LOT of AUD. I just came back from the UK a weeek ago, everything is expensive (when u convert to AUD) there, but people also earn more. Our conversion rate sucks. And its not just simply because we are a lazy country, its just a tad more complicated than that.

The sad truth is that there is LOTs of demand and little supply, so splits cost $$$. Add to that our crap conversion rate and it goes into the pom's favour ever so slightly. Remember its not exactly cheap to transport a Kombi to the other side of the world, they aren't doing it for profit. Id prefer to see them stay here, but firstly id rather see them be restored, here or anywhere else :D

I think I'll go hide whilst I ponder what to do with my American imported cabriolet.

The last thing I want is the American's getting upset with me because I've got one of their cars. They might invade.:jesus

But seriously guys, whilst I understand your frustration, everyone is out to make a buck - and to find something rare. That is a fact. What we don't appreciate as Aussie's is that it is now happening to us.

The moral is - do something about it. There have been numerous splits for sale on this site over the months, most of which have taken a long time to sell....so the early bird gets the worm - or the VW.

I think all of us would like to be in the position where we could make such a living. Good luck to those with the entrepreneureal skills - no matter what country. I see it as swings and roundabouts - ie - everyone wins in the end.

Oi!

What the hell is going on here!
Some of you guys are going right off the tracks,it's almost racial!
You trying to put off guys from the U.k. coming on our forum!
They must think we're just a bunch of Aussie yobbo pigs,I think it's great that people from other countries can be on here and be jealous of our stuff and the ones who have moved here can't beleive their luck.
I am sorry for any greif said by others, they do not represent all Aussies, what ever happened to the reason of us having this forum.......that's right! we all have a passion for veedubs and all share this common thing no matter where we are in the world.

Hello Mr Pickle,as I have noticed in Volksworld for sale section alot of bugs busses and ghias are left hand drive imports from the U.S. or Europe,
Is this a deterant for you guys to have a lefty if you were to buy one or does it not matter as I could not stand having a L.H.D. car in a R.H.D. country?

The question you have to ask yourself is, are you gonna buy them all? if not, well some one will. Better to see them saved than continuing to rust out in a field only to end up at SIMS.

besides all that, you guys have bought the lie, a BAY is a much better bus. You should be buying them :punk:

this topic however obsolete is still discussed
n this saves a new thread being born
furthermore the subject background gives a little history to the subject n how it has evolved over time

splits are more sort after just becasue they are rarer but any Australian import is highly prized as it offers right hand drive and RUST FREE!!!!!! , American imports go well to but given a choice people take a more expencie Aussie over the American ones (left had drive cars are legal to use in the uk with no mod plates etc)

I see both sides, when i was still in the uk the thought of getting a car i didnt have to weld the whole bottom 6 inchs and floor pan was almost a dream! Aussie cars offered that but now i am here i want them to stay so thet the price's dont get over inflated and i can still find what i want easily (yes i know prices already over inflated)

As you've said steff, that horse has bolted. Besides, with the current VW scene in Aust, there are plenty of splits for people who want them and plenty left for Poms to buy from importers. We have the advantage of going for a drive and searching for them or knowing people who we can find them through. They are more plentiful than oval beetles and there are 2 ovals on Ebay this week that I'd call cheap. As far as splits being overpriced, it's not the initial purchase price that stops people buying a 'restorer' (which is still well below similar classic cars), it's the $10-20k of repairs needed to put it on the road... and that even applies to the good ones.

There is no such thing as a 'rust free' split now. My boss got one off a farm last year near Broken Hill. Even it has rust and there is NO rain out there.

iF you want a split in Australia they are still available and cheap.
One went on ebay this week buy now $500. The ones that get sent to the UK can be bought buy Aussies cheap!
Buy the time they get to the UK they have shipping middlemen etc etc and then they are more expensive but are still selling ,
There are many splits on the road now that would have been crushed for scrap if they wernt sort after buy Poms and us.

I've been reading for hours on here and this thread intrigued me, I m new here and hopefully since you don't want buses leaving your country maybe you can help me out.

just a brief back ground I m in the UK right now but looking to move over to Australia once my visa is all sorted and I was thinking of buying a split here restoring it and then bringing it with me. I m even going to look at an OZ import I may bring back, HOWEVER I m a little daunted by the importation process and don't like the idea of spending out on a resto only to find it getting locked up in customs for some insane red tape reason.

So call this a crazy idea that came to me while reading this thread but what are the chances of me finding a resto project and having it restored in australia ready(ish) for my arrival?

I've already seen some restorers work in OZ and I m impressed very impressed.

I want a splitscreen as a promotional bus for work I m a tradesman, what I want is a crewcab, if I can't find one then either a single cab or panel. I'd prefer a crew cab over all else since I can't afford to run two cars and then I can fit my new VW friends in it at the weekend

Care to help out?
