I'd go insane without surf...so lets hope it does not go flat for any extended periods! :o

Managed to get away from work early today and lay down four coats of base coat and three coats of clear. Turned out pretty damn sweet - can't wait to get the dynaudio 240GTs in there and bolt them to the car!

Any trophies will be a bonus, but the satisfaction for me is the personal fulfillment of the process moreso than the end result. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait till its finished and I can actually enjoy it - but I think I enjoy the actual restoration just as much (sicko I know)....and no I won't restore anyone else's car just because I enjoy doing it :thumb

Thought I'd just preempt those requests :D

By the way, have you crancked the motor already? This reminds me of the post that you added on some really sweet looking beetles with mad sounding exhausts and I kept wondering how yours sounds.

BTW, those kickpanels look incredible, it looks like they are going to look as if they were part of the sheet metal and from factory :D

Yep I was trying to integrate the kicks into the surround paint work so they would blend in!

Re. the type IV, haven't cranked it yet because haven't had any wiring in the car (that will be solved soon!). Should be soon then I'll try and figure out how to upload an mpeg or sound file!

Specs are pretty mild, stock 71mm crank, stock rods, 2L heads with 1800 valves mild port job, 215mm flywheel lightened slightly, stock type IV pressure and clutch plate, standard grind cam (wish I would have gone a bit more agressive), dual 40mm dellortos with CB performance update kit (horizonta discharge tubes etc), mallory unlite dizzy (with vac advance) and promaster coil.

So basically nice healthy torquey type IV that shoud give me lots and lots of trouble free miles. And I certainly expect that sweet exhaust to have a nice note. Estimated hp....hmmm...I will be getting it onto a rear wheel dyno after run in but I'd say about 90-100hp at rear wheels (big guess though).

Who knows...it might make an appearance....but definitely will not be finished. Will depend on weather though as the ragtop probably won't be fitted by then :o

phark.

You could make a real name for yourself building cars like that.

Those front enclosures should give you excellent response and good extension (I know you mentioned they were a little small, but they are the largest I've ever seen in the front of a beetle). Especially with quality drivers in there like what you have got.

Whats the rest of the components in the system ? Good move ditching the 6 x 9's, they are a great compromise speaker for those of us who cant justify a sub (the rear luggage area behind the rear seat makes quite a bassy enclosure for most good 6 x 9's conincidentally), but certainly not high on the list for sound quality.

Oh yeah, and while the Fuchs look good, the cups look way better.

Awesome paint too.

Depends on weather - rain = VW work....fine = house renos. Have to get ready to pour the remaining half of the driveway next weekend plus tidy up all the shite in the front yard so the posty doesn't get cranky with us! Oh yeah and finish the carport, side fence, prepare for topsoil and turf, garden edging etc etc....now you can see why it takes me so long to finish this bloody project! :o

Re. audio.....Alpine CDA9833 head unit (time alignment, and some other features which will help with tuning), Eclipse 12in sub, Kenwood amps (may upgrade down the track), Stinger 1/0 power wire, distribution block and batt terminals etc etc. Should be a nice tight system that is not over the top.

The marking was only rough so I could gauge how far to apply filler to provide additional strength and to start smoothing out the bumps. Here is after a couple coats of filling/sanding etc.

Bolted in the drivers side kick panel this evening - certainly isn't going to rattle as it is tight to get in and the three bolts with nylock nuts make them very secure.

Fortunately managed to run the speaker wiring fairly discretely. Tomorrow the passenger side will go in.

Everything takes so damn long!

Hope you've got a big trophy cabinet...coz you're gonna need one. Those speaker housings are awesome. You should make up some moulds and sell them through some dub shops. You'd make a mint. :thumb

Thanks guys, yep I am pretty happy with the kick panels and although time consuming and messy they were not that all that hard. No plans to make moulds at this stage though...but who knows maybe down the track.

Speaking of which, after a bit of clearancing the passenger kick panel went in.... a little pursuasion was required due to the tight fit, but they got there eventually!

The sun in this pic made it a little hard to get good photo.
