No-I didn't need it to be auto, but thought that almost everything else had been tried on a Beetle except this-so why not.My NB is auto and it's a dream to drive,so the Oval should be the same.It should have plenty of power,so stop light sprints should be fun.

mscabrio-did you ever post any pics of the back of yours?I don't think I have seen any on an NB.Have seen plenty on the XR Ford utes and they look good-will have to get a set for that as well-bloody cars-they try their best to keep you poor.

Had a day off today and put the body back on the pan.Had a few minor things to tidy up first, then lifted it with one felt sling thru the door openings.Made a small block of wood for each side and covered them with carpet to keep the sling off the headlining and stop it crushing the metal strip that holds the lining. With all the mods to the pan for the auto,I managed to have the motor sitting about 15mm too low at the back-easy enough to fix-just have to modify the bell housing mounts to compensate. It all fits that well,it looks like it came from the factory.

Gary

The cars looking great is it nearly ready for regristration

Have you thought about widening the bumpers by about 3 or 4 inches or so to match the guards. You have to do this from the center and moove the mount holes as well.

It would look trick but a bit of stuffing around but after all its only money

Excellent stuff. Can't wait to see it all finished. I'm particularly looking forward to hearing about how the auto goes. You might start a trend of some sort. ;)

Thanks Fellas- I'm keen to give it a hiding.I cut and shut a couple of front bumpers to see what it looked like, B4 I had these rechromed.Looked odd to me-too wide and too thin.

Took some of the auto in position and thru the hole in the back seat area-and my guide pegs still in position for locating the body in the right place when I lowered it onto the pan.Can also see the rear bars I made up to stiffen up the frame horns. When I am happy with it all, will send all the bars and brackets away to be cad plated.

Got a couple of hours in last night-been too hot to even go into the shed for the last week.Back on it's wheels now,but think I need to lift it a spline at the back-just a little too low.I have all the VW tools to align the back wheels,so will give it a go after I get it sitting at the correct height. Finally finished the auto dipstick tube.Took ages to decide where to actually put it.I bought it into the engine on the LH side.Had to lengthen it 100mm so it could just come into the engine bay.Had to shorten a dip stick from an auto Kombi and scribe the level marks-all turned out OK.The hardest bit was making sure the tube didn't hit against the body under hard acceleration-made this bracket with a rubber panel to allow for some flex.To prevent any trans fluid being blown into the engine bay under pressure,I have made the dip stick an air tight seal inside the tube, and will weld an 8mm breather pipe high up on the outer tube, and fit a filter and drain tube to vent behind the LH back wheel.Got the hand brake working as well-had to make some extension tubes to go over the original tubes coming from the pan.I had to reposition these during the mods,so didn't know how long to leave them-I was 85mm too short.

Adjusted and aligned all the steering system.Screwed all the fuel fittings into the tank and fitted it.Found a grinding feeling in the steering at the straight ahead postion-searched for ages and couldn't find the cause.Had the tank out again and saw a very small scratch mark in the new paint-just where the column would be.I had fitted a centre shaft from a later Beetle and it was just catching.Moved everything further into the car by about 20mm and it's all OK now.

Got it registered last week so I could enter it in a car show here as a daily driver.Have got it and my "64 on Seasonal registration, they can be done for 3 months at a time without having to pay for a reinstatement fee.Still haven't got the doors back together yet.Had 3 of my VW's and my ute in the 'Family group" catagory.Don't know how I went-they were so late doing trophies-had to get all the cars home,so didn't hang around.

Thought I would give an update-It's almost there.Got the auto and motor back in,finished all the wiring, made a switch for the auto's kickdown, drilled and tapped the 4 intake manifolds for a vacuum source for the auto etc.Just finished swapping the CV joints onto the auto axles and have fitted one side(had enough for today) Lifted the rear suspension up about 30mm,was a bit too low and couldn't get rid of the excessive negative camber at the lower setting-all looks good now.Auto gear changer is in and all adjusted and hooked the small selector indicator lights into the dash light system.Only need to bleed the brakes and fill the auto and I can start it and make it move.Still waiting for my doors to come back from the painter-will phone tomorrow to hurry them up.
