engine is back in the car with manifolds and fan housing already fitted. Injectors and rails mounted up too. Troy has been a busy boy in the last 24 hours!!

Hopefully tomorrow all the exhaust etc will go on followed by re connecting all the oil ines etc etc.Wednesday is a public holiday in Brissy for Ekka so a whole day to do more work. I may be able to get down there and assist in the jigsaw puzzle. He hopes to have it running by this weekend so that means some video will be on the way especially for you Westi!!

Troy picked the turbo up this arvo with all good news. They have tested it and all is AOK. At 50psi oil pressure no leaks and everything is doing as it should. They also did a bit of work on the oil port and drain opening it up a little. the oil slinger scroll in the housing was also opened up a bit too.

So tomorrow will be a big day and Troy is telling me that it will be running tomorrow arvo. If that's the case i might have to make a cross town trip with the video camera.......

Engine back in and running but oil drain is still an issue even with a scavenge pump. I got Troy to disconnect the oil drain from the scavenge pump and then had it into an oil drain and started it. no oil coming out of the tail pipe!!

engine sounded very tough and no leaks anywhere!! Troy was loooking into re routing the oil drain line and tried it but as soon as it is connected back up to the pump turbo fills up with oil and starts to push it past the seal again after about 2 minutes. this is even with now using the oil gallery that feeds the pressure switch and temp sender for the feed line to the turbo. Scavenge pump may be cavitating? Are the lines too big? Some have said to go bigger than what we already have which doesn't seem to make sense.

Will research some more but all advice will be greatfully taken on board.

3/4 line should be what you need.
if you have any smaller this can sometimes cause back pressure ,oil banks up in the line.
the best way around your problem is to restict oil flow to the turbo as it doesn't need that much(i am quessing ball bearing turbo is being used)if you have already done this and you already have 3/4 return to the scavenge pump.then your problem can be fixed quite easily.
it may sound alittle weird but you need to make a sump for the bottom of the turbo that is atleast 500ml to 1L.this will give the turbo oil a chance to leave with no build up of pressure.then put your scavenge pump on the bottom to draw it away.
alot of low mount turbo's in factory cars run this method.
you could even run a few testers with containers to try before you manufacture.

please don't stuff around trying other things as this will work.you have already proved it buy doing the test you had metioned earlier.
tell me what dimensions you need i will send it up in the post.
and hurry up i want to hear this thing in action.

Re. the sump pot Brad refers to above, perhaps measure what capacity the little swirl pot is that Troy got from me when he picked up the pump - may be ideal as this is what Heath had it made for when we purchased the scavenge pumps. If he doesn't want it or is not big enough no probs, I'll grab it off him whenever....but if it works it may worth a try as it already has the AN bungs etc so should be fairly easy to plumb in hopefully!

on my green beetle when it was turboed the turbo was mounted behind the rear apron and i had a little sump below with the pump drawing from this it seemed to work well- the only thing i found was i needed the pump mounted low aswell at first i had it higher than the turbo and it started smocking out the exhaust- this may have something todo with the pump as i used a holley blue fuel pump- after i moved it to the same level as the turbo it did many years of work with no problems
thanks adam

Hi Mate, did you get the paperwork with the pump showing you how to set it up from alan? I would also use the little tank I had made. Gravity feed the oil into the tank and draw from that. I used one of the fittings to go to my breather tank so the pump wont suck oil out of the turbo. You can download the specs on the pump from here:
http://www.turbowerx.com/Scavenge_Pump/Electric_Scavenge_Pump/Electric_Scaven...

Troy has tried a few things tonight testing out flow from turbo and making a make shift sump. Seems to work!!. So now it's a case of measuring and planning stuff to get one made to fit with the room that doesn't really exist under the back in the right spot.

turbo sump is on it's way. Should be to Troy early next week. Big thanks to Westi for whipping one up to fit in the limited amount of room we have to work with.

Cheers mate!! Troy did say you sounded shite house on the phone! Definately buy you a few beers at Warwick for all your help.

Well just got a phone call from Troy telling me the turbo sump is in place and all is good so far. He also took it for a drive to the end of his cul de sac and back. Clutch feels really good and he can get all gears no problems at all. couldn't really give it a squirt as it doesn't have a proper tune yet but the little bit he could give it in first was super responsive!! Tune won't allow it to rev much over about 2200rpm so trying to accelerate in 2nd was a no go. she started to jerk and pig root a bit but the thing Troy commented on was just how tight the rear end feels with the solids mounts and gearbox braces. There is certainly no movement at all!!!

I could hear the excitement in his voice over the phone net alone my nephew Jacob(who is 4 and VW mad)yelling in the background "daddy just drove the Vee Dub"!!! And then "take me for a drive daddy"!!

I guess someone will sleep well tonight after finally getting a drive of his car albeit a short trip to the end of the street and back for the first time in about 6 odd years......

Am hoping to get some video of it running(even at idle is sounds like it means business) in the next few days for all to have a look at.

Mate I think Troy has finally started to see the finish line in sight as the talk of buring the car and pushing it off the retainer wall at the back of his house has stopped LOL

Type 3 is booked into the dyno monday 1st september to get the rest of the tuning completed. the only thing that sucks is I'm in New Zealand for the week so I guess I'm switching my phone to international roaming to receive the news of whether all goes to plan or not.....

Got a call yesterday from Troy to say the car has been delayed a week for tuning to them being really busy. So it has been put off till next tuesday so i will be home from NZ yay!!

i have spotted 4 Vw's since being here and all have been really good. Late split bus restored and looked very neat, Stocko superbug in mint condition, Early 60's beetle in stock form but good nick in one of the country towns on the way to Queenstown and the standout was a late 60's beetle dumped on it's nuts(I'm talking you couldn't roll a coke can under the front end!!) with 356 hubcaps and nice chrome. All the car were spotted in Queenstown which is dominated by late model station wagons with roof racks carrying ski's and snow boards!!

Yep Alan it WILL be running at Warwick. Plan is for 6500rpm limiter and 15psi for starters. We'll see how it goes at Warwick with that then make changes perhaps down the track once everything is proven(or broken lol)
