Hi Dave and Co.
I am back online after heading off for work straight after portland.
Had a great time, and the car started to work well. Just learning how to launch with the turbo motor. Starting to get the idea at last. Quickest
time was 7.8 and fastest was just over 90mph.
I did at least 8/10 better than I had previously in the 1/8 and I didn't do a decent run the whole weekend.
Niggly little gremlins came out, and most are now shaken out. You know what is like, get rid of one, and find another.
Interesting comment about the torsion bars but do consider that I am running 30mm new sway-aways now with QA1's and swayaway springplates with JCL
retainers. I think I launched in the photo here at around 4500 rpm. Still got 4k left to play with here. The QA1's are on a light setting, they
will need to get stiffened a bit more for next time out.
It is a heavy car especially compared to Ross's.
Missed not seeing you there this year Dave, I am hoping to go nth later this year to join the fun.
I am looking forward to getting back to the 1/4.

Back to stock height... 60mm beam, stock spindles, wide 5 discs on the front, stock smoothies with 165's all round, bumpers back on, carpet and then
I'll give it a shot.... Everything else works a treat.... If they find more issues, I guess the POS will become a full-time racer.... We'll see....

Dear "DANGEROUS"Dave...yes a picture paints a thousand words.Yes axle squat ia a dangerous area for the driveline to reside in.One thing in the
"DOG'S favour is those sway away axles of mine are the old good steel type.Henry generously lent me those 28s to try as it was our best option at
the time & it is quite obvious that they are inadequate let alone put them on a 100% traction track where the problem will worsen.I will say this
whilst the rear is going down the steering department is still in existence & the car lacks the dreaded violence that it had initially at
Willowbank. The stiffer the rear the more higher the frontal air gap will become!!!The car's energy is being absorbed on the "squat" which is good
for clutch & diff preservation but an obstacle for good 60 footers.I have to find the compromise point now as the car is so directional & easy
to pilot.Regards/well wishes..Ross-"OLD DOG"

hi Greg,
While the engine DOES rotate clock wise, the REACTION FORCE is actually reduced a little by he driver being on the RHS.
If the engine ws front mounted it wouls help to have the driver on the LHS.
I think in this instance it is just that the drivers weight(between 80 to 100kg) is transfered to the rear,
and it shows slightly.
My car is about 1/2" higher on the RHS to compensate.
This equated to less than 2 degrees of spring plate angle.

Did rodney's steering wheel come off?
Lucky the damage to car and driver was minimal and he was able to keep racing.

Great shots there Pete, thanks. It's always great to see what the car's doing off the line. I really ejoyed lining up alongside you in SHRAPNEL.
In that run I pulled the big red eye yet agian -.078 to your .048, slick!!! Looks like I need to stiffen the compression on those shocks a tad. 27mm
bars are still taking a pounding!
Overall we had a great weekend for the first time out in the car.
Saturday: 1st run; RT .313, 60ft 1.571, MPH 90.36, ET 7.269
2nd run; RT -.056, 60ft 1.570, MPH 85.71, ET 7.551 ( missed shift to 3rd)
Sunday: 1st run: RT.162, 60ft 1.542, MPH 93.95, ET 7.170 (richened main jet)
2nd run: RT .047, 60ft 1.600, MPH 94.34, ET 7.253 (against Mike Kristen for a win)
3rd run: RT -.210, 60ft 1.644, MPH 93.75, ET 7.300
4th run: RT -.078, 60ft 1.610, MPH 93.36, ET 7.337(against Peter Page)
5th run: RT -.114, 60ft 1.574, MPH 94.54, ET 7.200 (on a 7.200 dial in, damned red eye agian against Ross!)
Thanks again to Craig for a great weekend; cheers

Hi Dave,
great debut!
Is that your old engine from the red car,
or a whole new deal (except carbs instead of EFI)?
If so, it is freat to see what weight reduction can do!
Huge improvement changing the main jet on Sunday!
Good work!

Henry our weather man , said Saturday was 2700 ft around 20% water and Sunday was 1700ft , about the same water % .
Good to see David C that you ran some nice numbers what jetting did you run . I had Rods motor richen up from 190 (dyno) to 205 main jets . Running
tyres at 17 to 18 lbs trying to spin tyre alittle ,also good for tranny too .
Allmotor guys did real well over week-end . Great race to david, more seat time will help those cherrys ( Thats what I should do , after giving rod
the win )

To.......David O'Connor.SHRAPNEL debut must having certainly provided you with a huge reward of satisfaction.
I was lucky enough to be drawn against you & see how busy the OLD DOG was to catch you when you did a
7.2 on a 7.2 @ 94.54mph...on a minus 114 red light.....being paired up against an old fart like me should not have
rattled your nerves !!!You have to stretch the tree to learn the tightropes. The OLD DOG that run did a 6.96@
102.51mph & your new ride appeared strong from inside my cab.We have found the indicated rev limit is 500rpm
short & now we will be able to stretch the DOG'S hind legs.Anyway well done Dave. Your little girl was well into it
as was your wife which was great..
Congatulations,kind regards & well wishes..Ross.
ps I bet you have more of a chance of forgetting your red light than PAGEY has of forgetting his !!!!!

Red light and missed shift, was because i was thinking about pussy instead of racing.

David O'- congratulations on a beautifullly presented and sucessful Volkswagen!!!. Remember, Red lights are OK and needed (but only in time
trials)
Pete, ever the professional, looked great, went hard (look forward to racing you sometime)
Ross, maybe a to-do list on the dashboard will help? (I've got one I can loan you)
Rod, the terms "go straight and go hard" can be used together . Excellent job and the win to boot!!!
To everyone else racing at Portland, good to see so many of you out there, racing and having fun, gaining experience, knowledge and supporting the
marque
Craig and the rest of the organisers - job well done!!!
Mike and Darrin - proud to be associated with you

Dave you got it , this is the old 2276 motor from my red "street " Beetle. It was in moth balls for around 4 years (?) while we worked on the big
motor. The 2386 has failed in 3 out of 3 outings with flat cam and lifter issues!!!
You might recall the Street Eliminator Heads; both you and Brownie must have got sick of the sight of them over the years with the amount of work you
put into them: THANKS, it's finally paying off! This motor is now running IDA's instead of the injection and making much more power with the
changeover! I still can't work this out, I was always a strong believer in EFI ???
Pete on Sunday we changed the main jet to a 200, dyno was a 195.
Michael the headlights are indeed stickers. I took a photo of the lenses in my other Beetle and got Jon Kruger to print a sticker up for me. I'm
sure he can print more if you want a set.
Ross it was a real treat lining up along side you I look forward to a second chance!!
Henry it's amazing how quickly this car reacts off the line . Much quicker than my porky 69 Beetle! I'll be using this as my excuse for the red
eyes.
Now where's the closest 1/4 mile track. It looks like another interstate trip. Damn those SA politicians

EFI should be easier to tune,
but you are always going to struggle to beat the atomisation
that a ram tube full of standoff can give.
