Das
The silver stuff you used to line the rear of your car and inside your door's what is is called and does it help deaden the sound from the engine. I
am asking in interst to use on my car when i get it that far, I thank you for any help in advance.

Thanks guys,
derraux - the sound deadener I used was both Dynamat Extreme and Stinger Roadkill Expert - both are comparable in cost (ie. pretty expensive) and
performance according to evaluations done on car audio forums. They are designed to deaden sound from the engine/road and also insulate a bit of the
heat as well.
you can get this stuff from most decent car audio shops. There is cheaper stuff available that I am sure will do a better job than nothing at all.
Cheers
Alan

do you find that the resto has gotten to a point that sure you want to take it out but it has allready been so long it doesnt really matter when you
finish it, not that my bus is anywhere near as good as this bug thats how i get with the bus, just keep on doing little jobs when the funds get low ,
i think all the little jobs make it , just look at the battery area thats hidden under the seat there a couple of days there and no-one will see it
unless you got the seat out, the small jobs take the longest and can be the most frustrating i think , i also feel that you couldnt pay someone and
get a better result , you have put in so much effort that money just cant buy . well done its a credit to you
cheers darren
ps , did you live up the moiuntains , if so its a shame you moved north , i use to love looking for the little grey bug on the way to work (not to
sure it was you )
gravity wont get you high

Cheers Darren, I've always lived in Brisbane so it must have been someone else's grey bug you used to see.
You are right about the resto though, so many times I've just wanted to say "stuff it, no-one is going to see that" and do a quick job to try and
get it on the road sooner.....but each time I've also realised "I've spent this much time and money on every other aspect there is no point doing a
shitty job on that part". So yep, it will be finished when it will be finished - I am not going to cut corners at this point in time!

Geezuz Das-you weren't joking about the cost of the sound deadener.Went to a Car Audio place today to get some.He had a pack of Dynamat,20 square
feet(the roll is 450 wide),and wants $290 for it.Is he having a lend of himself? Surely it could be picked up cheaper than that?

Das, How is the carpet attached to the back of the rear seat? Is the grey thing on top binding or is it a type of holding plate...?

Unity - yep th silver strip on top is a retaining strip that fixes it in place....it is also glued along the sides.
All berg shifters have the t-handle so this is no different to all the others.
So close....yet so far

You can get cheaper stuff yes - and in most cases I am sure the effectiveness would still be appropriate. I think I spent around $500ish which covered
both doors, rear quarters, parcel tray and kick panels. Not cheap but you only do it once!
There is other stuff - I used Fusion brand from the same car audio place and it was like $20 per sheet (around 500 x 500mm) - about 5 sheets did the
entire floor pan. This is also self adhesive but is not foil lined so probably doesn't help with any heat insulation...just a bit of vibration
damping.

Thanks guys - it is indeed a long thread - time to make it a little longer
Brad, windows will be tinted - I still have to make a jig to get the 1/4 windows into their frames first though. By the way, I'll email you this week
about organising collection of the splitty for storage.
Okay, after a big day of working on the house yesterday, I got back into the car today - bonnet is back on (still have to adjust) - I've been used to
working on it for so long without the bonnet I already smacked my head on it a few times today!
Mexi-style seal is on (half way in first pic)....although I love it low, the rear end is almost dragging on the ground (the extractors are about 60mm
off the ground so it will come back up soon.

Drivers seat back into position, feels like it is close now! Very comfy.
Door trims are not on yet because I have to sort out the 1/4 windows first.

Well, this is why the thread has taken 49 odd pages and has spanned over roughly 2 years! I have been juggling the vw resto with house renovations
which are pretty much complete (finally). Lot of work - here is a before and after shot to give you an idea nn[ Edited on 10-7-2005 by Dasdubber ]

Last couple of pics for now....last shot is after front bumper went on tonight. Don't quote me but hopefully I'll be able to fire it up in about
three weeks (depending if I can paint the beam and hook up/bleed brakes by then)....and install and adjust linkage....and set up timing....and finish
wiring.....you get the idea.
And there is the end of another weekend - they go all too quickly.

Thanks again to everyone for the kudos! :thumb
The house is in Tarragindi (just on the south side) - any reputable tennants out there who want three car undercover parking for their veedubs and a
nice house to rent?? Not long now till we move down the coast - hopefully whoever rents it will be able to look after it :P
There is still fair amount of work to go on this beetle so there will be a few more pages to add to the thread yet (cracked the half century -
Whoo-hoo!). But don't despair, your next fix of Volkswagen resto (after this one) won't be too far away as the 68 Beetle I have patiently waiting
will also be getting a body off resto (but not to the extent of the current one) - this will be sold once completed so there may be a few interested
buyers out there that will track the progress :bounce
Cheers
