bugeyebabe - I'll send you U2U
Not much more tonight - ran out of steam so did a few little things like wiring up the fuel pump and getting ready for the front indicators, and
putting the latches on the Euro seats (see pics)...

Yeah this one won't be for sale that is for sure!
But the other beetle (68) will be for sale once restored (two pack dark blue paint already done - not by me though), new black headliner and black
carpets, nice navy velour seats and trims, 1916 with dual 40 dells etc...here is a pic of the body next to my 63:

At the risk of this thread becoming a veedub/real-estate forum, here is a pic of the backyard (well part of it). Very briefly for those who may be
interested, the house is 3 bedroom (aircon in main), freshly painted inside and out, timber floors, big paved entertaining area, landscaped front and
backyards, house alarm (not monitored), screens on all windows, walk to bus and bikepath, 7kms to city, one car lockup garage and two car carport,
3x3m shed etc.
I have to finalise exact amount but it will be between $310-330pw with lease starting around mid to late August. U2U me for any other details, I
promise to get this thread back to the veedub
Tonight did a bit more wiring, pulled the carbs off again so I can get to the spark plugs to sort out the spark leads. Put the headunit in - now have
to wire it up.
Does anyone have any original running board clips (the early style with wide chrome trim)?? I only have three that weren't rusted out and the repro
ones are absolute crap. Any help would be aprpeciated.
Cheers
Alan

The juice is finally flowing - with nervous apprehension I hooked up the negative terminal and tested the wipers....check - lights.....hi beam -
check....low beam - no check.
Shit, dash lights not on either but high beam indicator light stays on. First problem - had wires mixed up (high beam indicator light vs speedo
light). Okay speedo light works, but not other gauge lights - next problem - forgot to ground the gauge light circuit. Sorted that now dash lights
work (see pic).
Low beam still not working - whoops, forgot that ground too - sorted that now lights work (see other pic). Voltmeter reading 12V - check.
Can't check starter yet (engine is not ready just yet)...have to get new oil pressure switch tomorrow, and two prong brake switch. Getting close.
Oh yeah, the number plate is not that exciting - even though it will be officially a 68 (due to pan), at heart its a 63.

Yeah it is just teasing me now being so close. Just so I could feel like I was going backwards once again I pulled off the front beam after adjusting
the steering stop. I tacke it on whilst the beam was in place, then welded it fully once the beam was off.
I had to shorten it slightly, as well as making a cross cut to allow a slight bend (hard to explain)....then had to make some shallow cuts in the hump
section so it could be flattened and rewelded.
Rear wheels were pulled off so tomorrow the rear suspension can be raised (yet again).
Pics show beam after wire brushed, then after two coats of high build primer. Having some dinner now, then later will put the base colour (silver) and
clear on so it has a chance to cure before bolting it back on tomorrow.

Well, hopefully the neighbours didn't get too cranky with the compressor going intermittently and the occasional waft of paint fumes :o
Anyway, first pic is of the beam after two coats of base coat....then after a couple of clear.
Now it can cure overnight (luckily its not too cold tonight) - then back on tomorrow arvo.

Hehehe....it'd take a lot more than beer for me to restore someone else's car after the pain and anguish I've been through for mine! But thanks for
the offer :thumb :P
I had to stop work last night at about 9pm after a bottle of wine with the love and kisses, and then a few beers. Even though I wasn't using power
tools, too much juice is counter-productive to safe VW resto work.

Hey Alan, more nice work and great pics as always, geez I can't wait till mines this close to being driven, you must be pumped.
I take it all the work on the steering stop is due to the narrowed beam, the pitman arm must be heaps closer to the stop. Firstly I should say that
its obviously the "right" way to do it without cutting corners, but I was just wondering if it would be a bad idea to remove it altogether, then it
would be like a link pin beam wouldn't it?? I guess this may not get past an engineer, but are there any other valid reasons to leave it on??
Sounds like heaps of work on such a small part that you don't tend to think about but as usual its all part of the fun of modifying stuff.
BTW your "Das-resto" is really inspiring for people like me who want to do as much themselves as possible, thanks for sharing all your work in such
detail.

Cheers Barls and Greg,
Re. the steering stop - it certainly would be easier to leave it off altogether (it was cut off when the beam was narrowed). However, the major
problem was the inner edge of the front wheels hit the trailing arms on full lock. Not only does this have the potential to ruin my rims and trailing
arms, but also was a safety issue - could potentially cause some bad bump steer if I hit a bump (not that it would be on full lock when going fast
though).
I had to cut a corner off the pitman arm as you couldn't turn it due to clearance problems. So now it is finally sorted!
Well, I'm off to the KG cruise shortly with my mate (but unfortunately not for the full cruise) - too much to do on my car today. So hopefully more
updates later today.

Nah haven't started it yet (hopefully in two weekends time).
Some great care was taken to avoid scratches - it came off relatively unscathed as seen below. Bolt heads will be tidied up (couldn't get stainless
bolts to suit).

I did a quick rough wheel alignment on the front and tightened everything up to specs. The height will come up a fraction more shortly.
The rear has gone up a little too high (ongoing saga - I am getting adjustable spring plates next time!!). But I will leave it as is until I get it on
the road so I don't bottom out for the time being.
Cheers
