Time to start sorting out the stereo wiring. Tank was bolted back in place and last -8 braided fuel line tightened up. -4 breather line from filler
neck also back into position. Amp rack is just temporarily bolted in place so I could do some brainstorming on how to mount the distribution block and
crossovers....I'll figure it out! (eventually). There will be more fibreglass involved that much I know.

SHE'S ALIVE!!!!
Let me take you through the trials and tribulations of the last few days.....as Operation Fire-Up approached today there were some preparations that
had to be made.
Mission 1: check fuel system.
Friday night filled tank with 10L premium fuel, flicked on fuel pump for the first time to prime the lines. Quickly scooted under car checking front
and back for leaks - $hit, leak under rear left side. Shut the switch, simple problem - forgot to tighten up bulkhead fitting. Flick switch back on,
check again - $HIT, big leak under back right side - this one is pi$$ing out. Crap, fuel is leaking out through the carby. Shut switch off, remove air
filter, pull off linkage, remove carb top - readjust float height (was still to spec) but replaced needle and seat which may have got stuck. 11.30pm
time go to to bed.
Saturday all day work conference. Saturday night moved car back to do some work - $hit, massive puddle of fuel under front end. Further investigation
revealed slow seepage from the weld around the bung that was welded in for the AN fitting, also around the bung that plug that original hole. Since I
was planning to fire it up today (Sunday), had to scoot down to supercheap early this morning and bought some tank epoxy sealant - worked a treat.
Fuel system done - pressure set to 2.5psi - mission accomplished (finally).

Mission 2: Prime oil system
Filter removed, engine filled with oil. Coil lead removed and ignition turned for the first time - power to the starter - WHOO-HOOO!
Turned it over numerous times without spark for the time being to fill the oil lines and cooler (in shroud). Filter put back on, and engine turned
over again to build oil pressure. After some initial concerns about the oil level not reading on the dipstick, figured out it would be different to
stock since the dipstick doesn't go right down into the sump plate.
Thanks must be given to my mates who helped out today - much appreciated!

Mission 3: Fire it up (for the first time in its 2 1/2 year resto)
Engine oil check, fuel line check, spark check - took a deep breath and turned the key.....after a bit of a sputter it fired to life! (videos will be
up on the net sooner or later once I figure out how). No fuel leaks, no oil leaks, some major popping going on through the carbs (one was bad enough
to snap the needle off my carb synch tool - d'oh).
Luckily 063bug dashed home and got his synch tool and timing light. With the help of dak-a-tak, Rod and blup58 all eyes were peeled for problems
fortunately which there was none. My mates have some nice cars too :thumbnn[ Edited on 31-7-2005 by Dasdubber ]

Thanks to Pete, the carbs were synched/balanced and timing was adjusted close to the mark (although I have to find out what the marks on the
sharpbuilt correspond to). Engine eventually idled - still the occasional pop but further tuning on mixture, timing and jet sizes will help. No
pinging or anything else more sinister.
Sorry Alan and Pete, didn't get a pic of your cars to put up here - it was quite a nice line-up.

Here is my nephew (mini-blup58) - getting his first taste of volkswagenism and lovin it. He will be driving his dad's ghia in no time!
So overall it was a successful day - the beetle is finally running and driving...still lots of little niggles to sort out which was expected, however
I haven't smiled as much for quite some time. I will update with other pics/vids of the big day at some stage soon.

Thanks guys - yep the first taste of driving it today was great - the exhaust is really nice. Not heaps and heaps of power but I didn't build the
engine to obtain max power, it will be a really nice driver.
Oh yeah, there were a couple of hiccups today that I forgot to mention - firstly had #2 and #4 plug wires mixed up on the dizzy - it still ran quite
well surprisingly! But ran much better when wires were switched.
Also the car kept running even when the ignition was turned off, figured out a diode was required in the fuse panel in the ignition circuit rather
than a fuse. So that was fixed too!
The vids are pretty cool - the wheels look a treat when moving, also the torsion bars have settled in the rear now which have left the rear suspension
height pretty much perfect - very happy I don't have to adjust it again (for now anyway).

you know, it's a shame to think this thread is drawing to a close, so you'll have to continue it; the show must go on, or you'll be attacked by
starved spectators. maybe not right away, but soon we'll get restless, then edgy, then.. well it's not worth thinking about.
vids and sound.... first burnout.. pics on first long run... pics in front of various landmarks.... stories of the niggling problems and the ingenious
fixes.... maybe tour australia with a laptop
congrats on the fireup, it's a great feeling. My last effort had SEVEN fuel leaks first time i turned the fuel pump on. (12 PSI holley black makes a
racket, and flows some serious fuel) I've since learned about loctite 577 and NPT fittings

Cheers for the dashes home to get your timing light/synch tool and taking pics/vids - hopefully I'll get them up on the net soon. This would have to
be my favourite pic - looks nice and tough!
Not sure about this weekend - now have to get back onto finishing the stereo installation....also have to get the horn working and figure out how to
modify a dust cap so I can have a functional speedo, then sort out why the tacho is reading too high, and maybe make the jig to install the quarter
window glass....that should cover me for now!!nn[ Edited on 1-8-2005 by Dasdubber ]

The rear end actually settled a lot more since this pic was taken (after driving it around a bit) so it is a bit lower. I won't be readjusting for
now otherwise my extractors will bottom out - they cost too much to rip them off on a speed bump!
The front tyre is just rubbing on the guard whilst turning so the front will come up a fraction as well. Not much though :P
Seat covers as nice as they are will be gone shortly - it was just to protect the seats from the grease, oil and fuel that I have been covered in
during the last few days :pukenn[ Edited on 1-8-2005 by Dasdubber ]

Nah, I've built it to drive it - no point spending all that time and money just to admire it in the garage! I can't wait to get the engine broken in
properly so I can give it a good hard flogging!
Re. spare time - next project is the 68 beetle that I will document the rebuild as well - will be much quicker than this one though as the body is
already done (bought it off a mate) - then will sell it once restored. So my spare time won't be spare for long!
