Well done Alan - congratulations on getting it to this point. How different does the exhaust sounds under load as opposed to free revving it?

Because I was running no air filters during tuning the induction noise was pretty loud so its hard to tell - the exhaust sounds quite subtle at idle, just a nice rumble. But it certainly roared to life when I gave it some stick. Once I can get these vids on the net (hopefully on the manx club website once it is fixed), I'll post a link - it has sound.

Re. the 68, not as flash as this one no, I would never recoup any money if I went to this extreme just to sell it. It will be a full body off back to bare metal resto though. Dark blue two pack paint already applied, 66 b/j s/a pan however it will just have drums all round in wide 5. Adjustable front beam, 1916 with dual 40 dells...not a brand new interior but it is pretty nice (new black headliner and black carpets though). Should be a really nice "looker" for someone who doesn't have the time/space/skill to build a tough street bug themselves. Stay tuned. :P

Thanks again - its not quite finished yet though! There will be some more updates to come ahead.

Back to work again on the amp surround - first step was to form the base on which the fibreglass cover will be mounted. Three mdf blocks (under the platform) were sikaflexed to the body.

Then the base was cut and vertical piece angle cut and screwed to base. This vertical piece is what the hinge will be mounted to so I can access the amp controls as well as the wiring (speedo etc). Ran out of time again tonight -back to it tomorrow night.

The top pic shows both bases screwed to the mdf mounting blocks.nn[ Edited on 2-8-2005 by Dasdubber ]

Still chasing the clips - the two leads unfortunately went cold.

Speakers are Dynaudio 240GT splits, and sub is an eclipse (Can't remember model). There may be an upcoming amp change so I am going to hold off any further work on the amp surround.

Cheers

Well, time for a $hiteload of pics to bombard you all with.

After the monumentous fire up last weekend, I felt a bit more tuning was required. A flat spot from idle progressively worsened during the week (couldn't help myself taking it for a couple of runs up and down the street) - not having changed anything in the interim suggested blocked jet/s.

Today I pulled both carbs off and disassembled/cleaned them out - there was a bit of crud especially in the 1/2 side carb. I then reassembled the carbs, resynched and balanced, reset timing to 28 degrees total (mechanical) advance, with 10 degrees initial (at idle).

Flat spot pretty much disappeared - still some slight hesitation that will require some fine tuning/jet changes but much happier with its performance. I am kicking myself for using a stock grind cam - ah well, live and learn.

I am still yet to install the glass in the quarter windows - started this arvo but one of the trusty (ie. crap) repro latches almost split whilst peening the rivets that hold the latch in place. Therefore had to weld the crack whilst in the frame (fun yes) - fortunately not too much damage to the new chrome on the frame.

I now have to make a jig ala original factory style to get the glass in - the seals are tighter than a .....(insert favourite analogy here).

The paint really changes with the light - a real gold metallic comes through in direct light with the olive green quite prominent, then in the shade it almost looks grey....with certain lights the subtle pearl comes through (hard to catch in pics).

Just to prove that it actually runs! Kinda an action shot first up.

Then the end of another big day of work, time to pack up. More updates soon - these pics will tie you over for a while I hope.

At some stage I have to drop the left rear suspension (13mm higher than the right), then the next major task is to sort out the amp mount (possibly a new amp is on the horizon) and surround which will need to redesigned from the previous pics.

The front is pretty much at full height (oh dear) - could have used with a bit of extra adjustment right now! The price of being low I guess (ie. rubbing guard on hard corners).

More than likely I will be selling both of them - once I know for sure (hopefully in next few days) I will let you know. The Kenwood amps would do a great job of driving the rest of the components you have. They will be a great price too so stay tuned :)

das mate love your work (as you would have noticed from my previous posts) the paintwork is brilliant, the colours in the differing shades of light are stunning).

a little thread hijack - but the people looking for sound system equippment... i am selling pairs of 6 inch drivers from high quality sound systems for cheap... more details in buying and selling parts.

but back to das - i'm removing my rear seats - as they are never used for sitting - and replacing with car audio equipment, and i've been thinking about a nice smooth rolling fibreglass job. my question is where can i find fibreglassing products, what would you recommend and is there any tricks to it you havent explained already? cheers.

My advice would be:
- be prepared for mess (put plastic/tape on anything you don't want covered in resin - it will go everywhere when you are in a hurry)
- when doing the base taping on which you'll lay your f/glass over make sure you do a layer of tape, then spray adhesive alfoil on top because otherwise the resin will soak through the tape onto whats underneath
- don't mix too much resin at a time as it goes off quickly and you'll waste a lot (I normally mix around 200mL at a time) - also make sure your ratio (resin:catalyst) is exact
- only do two layers at a time and really poke it with the paint brush to get any air bubbles out - use a roller (specific f/glass roller) as well - let it cure then do more layers
- rip up the chop mat rather than cutting it with scissors so you don't get straight lines in the glass work
- wear gloves! (obvious I know) and a respirator if you're doing a lot - the fumes stink and are not great for your lungs - make sure the area is well ventilated
- once you are finished glassing, hit it with a sander (eg random orbital) to knock the high spots down before you start adding filler
- wear long sleeves and pants and goggles as the tiny glass fibres will itch the crap out of your skin
- apply your filler in thinner multiple coats rather than one or two thick coats that may not cure properly
- if you are carpeting/vinyling over it, don't be too worried about the finish of the bog - just want to make sure there are no lumps/dips....but if you are painting as I did, you have to prepare it like you are painting a car - all air bubbles and imperfections must be gone before you paint.

This is my first foray into fibreglassing so give it a go, its not as hard as you may think and the more you do the better you get.
Alan

So what is the feeling like when you hit it in first gear?? When I have my motor running,it has flat spots when I open it up from idle, and I have tried everything to tune it out-but once it's warmed up,it has no probs.I have never had one with dual twin throat carbs B4(only twin single throats) so it may be something to live with because of having no chokes.I have done some work on a 356SC with dual solexes, and it is a piece of shit while cold, but as soon as it warms up,the thing completely changes to run real sweet.

I guess I haven't really had it running for long enough to really warm it up, but it certainly seems worse upon initial start up. The flat spot was improved dramatically once I cleaned both carbs, but more fiddling with timing and jets will be required to totally eliminate it.

First gear is a treat - it really takes off but in second and third it runs out of legs when getting up in the rev range. This is to be expected with stock cam, stock rockers and valve springs - in the future I may add ratio rockers (if available for type IV)....and maybe one day add a bigger cam....and bigger p&c's....and.....but for now, it will stay as is (no money left!).

Whoops, forgot to answer that part about where to get it from - I just looked up fibreglass supplies in the yellow pages (coincidentally the place I got my stuff from was called Volksglas - no vw relation). It doesn't cost all that much - the chop matt is stuff all, get 4L of resin as you will always find something else to use it for once you get the hang of it. Thats probably the semi expensive part (about $100 I think). They will be able to let you know what you need - I was just honest and told the dude I hadn't done it before and he was very helpful (guess it depends on who you get).

Cheers again for the kind words.
