So the wheel spacers were approved? Any details of this would be good.
Congrats on the road worthy, makes all that hard work worthwhile.

Wheel Spacers are illegal ....

BUT if they are part of say a break conversion that is approved then they are covered under a different section of the Code which allows them. So is Das's case they are legal as they were approved as part of the wheel and brake conversion.

Wheel Spacers in general are illegal because people bolt them on with thinking about it and use them to increase wheel base and fit silly wheels. This loads the stud, bearings, carriers etc and is unsafe practice.

Like everything we get the pleasure of seeing, working on, engineering, it is legal if done the correct way and in consultation with qualified engineers.

Congrats on the approval, when I get a few minutes I look fwd to checking it out.

I am sure Dave and Terry loved working on something that was that clean, must have been fun getting it on the hoist hehe

Cheers,

Brad

Thanks - I sure am looking forward to enjoying it. Still some work ahead yet (mainly finishing off the audio installation).

As Brad mentioned above, the spacers (adaptors) were part of the conversion from the start and I worked closely with the engineer to ensure there were no surprises come inspection time. The roadworthy dude questioned it but the engineer ultimately is the one who must approve/disallow them - and it was no problems in this case.

Fortunately didn't need to get it on the hoist though brad - just some minor stuff like seat belt bolt and roll cage padding.

I'm still trying to track down some early original running board clips (I have 6 now so just need 4 more) if anyone has any??

Cheers
Alan

Can you post a pic of what one (running board clip) in reasonable condition looks like? I found one on one of my wrecks but not sure if its any good or not.

Unfortuantely can't make it to Sawtell - I have to complete the registration process this friday....and because we are still moving house time is very restricted! I'll be at valla next year though!

It will make its debut at the VW Action day here in brissy on september 11. Won't be 100% finished but will be pretty close.

I've been liaising with Craig, but thats about my old beetle getting into the mag. There are a few mags interested in this beetle though including a couple of the biggies overseas. Hopefully it will get into something! :P

Alan,
Your timing is perfect.

1. Moving to the Goldy.
2. Sweet ride is completed.
3. Coming into summer.

Does it get any better..... Oh I forgot, 4 foot and offshore!

Truely a credit to your workmanship and dedication.

Yeah its been a long haul and not quite finished yet! I'll be glad once the amp installation is done and the car is well tuned and driving nicely.

Brendan, the problem with good surf is I am still working in brissy for a while so I am on the train at 6.20am then back at the station at 6.10pm so daylight (and potential for surf) is gone! Things will change though mid-Oct when I will be working down the coast - I will get to squeeze in the before/after work surfs more often! Bring it on :)

I'll try and get some more pics soon - the car is still living in Brissy for now until we finish the move!

Alan I know your pain. Live on the Central Coast but work in Sydney 6:15am and 5:45pm trains. Bring on daylight savings!! Can't wait for the late arvo sessions.

No probs barls - thanks for trying.

Finally the Beetle is registered and insured so I can enjoy it n the road. Had a wheel alignment which helped a lot - still have to find time to tune the engine better. Its not quite finished though - I'm looking forward to getting stuck into the amp install.

I can say for sure that I hope I don't have to move house for quite some time - it surely sucks.

Definitely the gestation - it was the longest 2 1/2 years I had to endure! Conception and birth were relatively easy in comparison and much quicker :starhit:

Well its not really "finished" just yet! I'll get some pics this weekend when back in brissy - it will be at the X-torque Autoshowdown at the RNA showgrounds on display as part of the Car Audio Australia stand) - here is the link:

http://www.autoshowdown.com.au/

Although something is wrong with the website at the moment.

Then there will be more opportunities for pics at the VW Action Day show the following Sunday at Carina. At the moment the car is residing at my in-laws so I can't work on it/take pics until the weekend!

No probs Barls - I agree with you. The actual inspection was pretty straight forward as I have liaised with him throughout the build. I had to do a handbrake test (ie. handbrake had to hold on a big f'ken hill - also had to use the handbrake to stop [not going fast] to simulate brake failure). Then the actual brake test whereby had to pull up using brakes only from a certain speed. So in short make sure your brakes are up to scratch.

Then the other stuff had been discussed before (rollcage padding [whoops forgot that on the day - thanks C.O. for coming to the rescue], proper seat belt mounting etc. All the other stuff should be no surprises to you or him hopefully!

Alan

Jim - DOVW maybe - will have to see (have to save up some holidays!).

Thanks Al and Barls,

I have kept in close contact with him on stuff like the demister, seat bases, seat belts, battery anchor.

I do have a concern that the rear drums are not as effective as they could be. I am not 100% sure that I have the brake pipes connected to the master cylinder in the right fashion.

I've also been assured that the noise and CO testing will be fine.

Thanks again
